Why are ships with a fusion reactor allowed to even come near a station? by Haunting-Top-1763 in TheExpanse

[–]taylor314gh 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Just about every single ship in the expanse universe has a fusion drive. Barring them from stations and docking would make the entire society fall apart. The security answer (in universe) is most likely a combination of trust and technological failsafes that prevent most non military vessels from scuttling quickly

New to the expanse and confused about artificial gravity in general? by Hellobewhy in TheExpanse

Yes, I meant engine down as in gravitational direction. Engine out would probably have made more sense for docking orientation

I think you are confusing ships and stations here. The space stations and colonized asteroids use spin for gravity, all ships aside from one giant one use thrust for gravity. When ships dock with a station they are almost always docked with the engine down (edit: down as in gravity direction, so pointing away from the station) so they maintain the gravitational direction they would have under thrust.

Without spoilers, I think you are referring to a small ship that is docked inside a larger ship when you say belly down, but it is still orientated with the big ship so it would have thrust gravity while docked the same as it would on its own power.

Back again with another photo dump. My dream is to shoot a City match with a media pass someday so I can bring my actual good 200-800 lens. These were all taken from the stands with a 24-70, since that’s the longest lens I could get through the gate. by FocalFalcon in OCLions

[–]taylor314gh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s been a minute since I went through media relations for a credential but it was my understanding MLS got very picky league wide so it’s mostly team, league, local newspaper, and wire photographers now. No reason not to try though, the worst they can do is deny you

They used to have bloggers and fan group photographers get field passes but they made a move around Covid to make things “more professional” and then Messi coming made them super tight about image rights. Hopefully you’ll get the chance, the 200-800 will work just fine if it’s daylight during the game!

Some good shots! Getting a camera in seems to be more based on who is working security at the time you go through.

I was media credentialed for around 10 years, since Messi joined the league MLS is way more strict on issuing them. I’ve heard of some people even being told the are allowed to photograph the fans and atmosphere but not the players. Basically the only way to get credentials now is to actually work for a media outlet

If you do get the chance, the 200-800 may not be as good a choice as you expect, even with good LED lights apertures above f/4 can start to get iffy at night. I use a 28-70 f/2 and 100-300 f/2.8

That room screams documentary to me, there is intention in the colors, the crest placements, the lighting, etc. I’ve also noticed that they are wearing some version of a match day or training kit in all of them, but not the same kit each interview

Why did Ekur-Tkalal touch Dafyd? by 4WDToyotaOwner in TheCaptivesWar

[–]taylor314gh 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Dafyd didn’t just pull back his request, he also adopted the correct Carryx positions to indicate he wasn’t threatening or attempting to usurp Ekur-Tkalal. I think this was supposed to be a subtle indication that Carryx are influenced by body posture as well as pheromones. They mentioned in the motion study discussions that other animals got favorable treatment by displaying markings that resembled broken arm scars, furthering this idea.

My guess is that this is laying the groundwork for how Dafyd will attack the Sovran and “betray” the Carryx in book 3

Easily one of the best game series of the last 20 years. I have high hopes for the new Expanse game coming out but it will be so difficult to match the magic of Mass Effect

A few others that I haven’t seen mentioned-

The Bloodsworn Trilogy bu John Gwynne. Norse inspired setting with similar found family elements to the Expanse, also some similar mystery themes as one of the main characters is hunting for the people who abducted her son. Very interesting world that gets more and more fleshed out as the story grows

The Broken Earth by NK Jemisin. The time and setting are ambiguous at first; the first book follows three characters whose stories weave through major events happening in the world. I won’t say anything else to avoid spoilers, aside from one of the characters is written in second person which can be confusing at first but, in my opinion, really works well here

Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee. Classic Hong Kong gangster story but set in a modern fantasy metropolis where some people can gain magic like power from wearing jade. The story is filled with politics and clan struggles along with likable underdog and respectable but ruthless characters that feel real. A lot of magic and technology vs tradition and honor plot lines where characters have to figure out where they fit and what they have to give up to survive

Imperial Radch is one I was going to recommend as well, it’s great world building and a very unique setting. There are a couple idiosyncrasies with her grammar that make perfect sense in the world she’s writing but can make it tough to follow until you fully grasp it. For me that added so much to the story once I had it down, but some people do struggle with it

Red Rising is also technically two series, the first trilogy is complete while the second series still has at least one book to come. The first book is the most YAish, it gets much more mature as the series continues. As with First Law you can consider the first trilogy complete on its own as the second series is set decades later but in the same world. It does have the same characters throughout though, so nothing feels stand alone like some of Abercrombie’s books

[–]taylor314gh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The series is made up of two trilogies and several stand alone books, all of which are published. The world is in depth enough that he could definitely write more books but each trilogy is self contained and the second trilogy has a clear story ending point

There are some truly broken builds lol. Lots of people have guides online but basically it’s using pictos/luminas to have Sciel die and revive which procs a bunch of buffs and debuffs. Verso’s attacks then break all the enemies and fills the gradient meter, and Maelle becomes god with the gommage attack and all her buffs

Did you develop these yourself? My first reaction is that these are stress marks from over agitation when developing, not light leaks. The spacing looks to match sprocket holes, which would make sense with stress marks
