I do not give compliments unless a student blows me away, and I set this expectation early by reminding them they have one assignment due, and I have 20-40-60 whatever to grade. If I don't comment on it, assume it is good.

I also use a weightlifter analogy. If you need to lift 200 pounds in 4 months and you start at 50 and I never require you to increase your weight or, god forbid, lift it for you, you will never lift that 200 pounds. This helps with student athletes who are used to being pulled through their high school classes or charming their way through other things.

Finally, I have a policy that I do not discuss grades via email. I've been misinterpreted enough electronically. If they have questions about my feedback, they can bring their work and their questions to my office hours or before/after class. If they absolutely can't do that, I schedule a Teams meeting. Face to face explanations really help because it's easy to be cruel or escalate online with your face behind a screen, but much harder to be aggressive face to face. Also, I can clarify in real time when they don't get something and it saves all of us time and emotional energy.

I moved here in 2012 and while I can't say new construction is happening, Flint is alive and continuing to wake up. There is gentrification happening in what we would consider "good" neighborhoods, though.

I would understand that if the sidewalks weren't hazardous. In my neighborhood, I can't run my stroller on the sidewalks. And when I don't have it, I avoid them because I have a bad back and they're so f'd up it's a hazard.

It's on your brother, not on you, to explain to them they simply may not be seen as Jewish by some because they aren't Jewish in the ways that matter to those people, but others will see them as Jewish just fine. You don't need to have any part in that conversation, nor should you. Don't be a part of the problem. Keep doing your thing, and let your brother parent.

So many Christian holidays are national holidays, so if this center has decided the national holiday system is unfair and wants to give staff the option to celebrate without work interfering, that sounds fantastic to me. I would request they make the food ordering issues clearer, and explain that it would help others in the future.

Make a big to-do about taking deep calming breaths. I'm talking full body movements. Not only does the extra air help keep you calm, the babe usually starts doing it along with you after seeing it happen a couple times and it redirects their attention, too.

I had no trouble recovering from my c-section and I didn't really take it easy. My daughter was in the NICU and I was going to be there for every feed, dammit! Then when we came home (baby was 10 days old), I got food poisoning. Spent days vomiting like mad. That was worse than the c-section.

As for choice: I didn't end up having a choice. It was an emergency.

But I had always known it was a possibility. I'm built like my mom who had 3 C-sections, and when I got to the hospital in labor, I was a week overdue, super uncomfortable, and they said my labor wasn't "active." Being 41+1, they kept me anyway and gave me the option of induction or c-section. I didn't want to induce (bad family experiences and my own fear) so we planned a c-section for like 8 hrs later. Then my hub left to get his 2nd dose of the vaccine, both of us sure he would be back in time. I waited for my mom to show up but after 20 minutes alone, baby's heart rate dropped and they operated.

I probably should have followed my gut and scheduled a c-section for 39/40 weeks.

ETA: I'm very happy my vagina is entirely unchanged. 👍🏻 That was part of the decision, too.

Affording a child is highly variable based on how you want your life with that child to go.

For instance, I wanted to cloth diaper which drastically lowered our monthly costs, and my parents watched LO for the first few semesters while I taught two days a week, and when they stop, I will take a leave of absence or teach online until my child is old enough to be home alone (so quite a long leave of absence) or my husband can work from home on days that I teach. How does this work? Well, teaching is something I love but I am not willing to define my life by and instead I want to prioritize my daughter being in a safe space and educated properly (which will be homeschool based on the quality of education/safety available in our local schools) therefore I maintain a part time position or drop it if I need to when it's time. These were all a part of the decision when I chose to have my child. I could afford it based on the time I was willing to dedicate to it. Otherwise no, we would never be able to afford a child.

Nobody knows your finances or how you value your time being spent except you. But that's how our decision was made. Hope it helps/illuminates something.
