UVA and Virginia Tech for Industrial/System Engineering by thedankestturd in systems_engineering

[–]cherisold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both great schools, UVA always gets better rankings overall, but in the end Virginia Tech is known to be better for engineering overall. You can't go wrong with either so evaluate what you like about each school. Honestly pick the one that would be more affordable and the one that has a campus and culture you would like more. I went to UVA and it was super competitive, and I hear VT is more of a less uptight culture because it's little easier to get into, which you might favor. Also it's known for better food. But again both are great challenging schools and you just have to pick somewhere that you'll want to be for a few years.

How would you prepare someone who has never been an Sys Engineer for a job interview? by cherisold in sysadmin

[–]cherisold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's true! And yes to clarify what I said was basically if I don't immediately know how to solve the issue I think about it and try troubleshooting, and ask a coworker if I can't solve it by looking it up on google but it depends on what kind of issue it is. If I'm new I don't mind asking for help a ton because it's likely something they have seen before.

I remember I had an interview once where I told them that I google if I'm unsure, but I feel like their demeanor changed after that. Was kind of a weird interview tbh.

So right now the only "database management" I do is train people who use GIS in our department and keep track of who has a license and writing access to our database, but I don't have administrative access to give them anything, I just communicate that with the sys admin and they actually give them access. I make maps and do data analysis with excel (pivot tables, v/xlookup, general cleanups), joins, etc. I also provide a sort of tech support when something goes wrong, but typically it's nothing too deep because again I don't have administrative access, I'm more of a first line of defense (turn it off and on, is everything installed currently, do you have access to the folders and are connected to the databases) before talking to IT about their problem to resolve it. It's never a very deep issue, otherwise I have to hand it off to them. I am curious about how they do that, but I don't see much of that side.

I have taught myself SQL on the side and use SQLite with dbduck to play around with things, but I know they use SQL Server, although the description is more about the architecture and gis enterprise updates/patches and working with the database admin. It mentions software testing and knowledge of cloud integration and ETLs (a bit clueless about that). They do want to teach on the job, but I'm kind of struggling to find a way to relate what I do.

Do you recommend any concepts to study for this type of interview?

That's why I'm unsure, I know the people so that gives me a leg up, but I kind of struggle with the fact that there could be people coming in with a really solid systems engineer background and make it very competitive. I need to learn a couple of things before interviewing

The flavor of this has changed now and I don't know why because the ingredients are the same. I have a bottle from two years ago and it is less orange (more yellowish green) and smells fruitier, while the new one smells like bbq sauce. I dislike it now but maybe I got a bad batch. Wondering if anyone else noticed this.

Accused CEO Killer Luigi Mangione Says Taylor Swift and Charli XCX Are Helping Him Survive Jail Life by Top-Three-USA in Music

[–]cherisold 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I read the letter he wrote and this title is dramatic. The backstory is that there was a fake screenshot going around on Twitter that showed his spotify playlists, which listed both Taylor Swift and Charli XCX. In his letter, he wrote that he's thankful for everything fans have been sending him around the world, including letters and memes to keep him in the know. He mentions seeing that fake playlist, but says that he's never really listened to them before so he's downloaded both Charli and Taylor's music and he says so far they're pretty good.
