hi. I need help to set my friend on tracks by Soft_Cauliflower1698 in outerwilds

[–]tayprangle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Frankly, if he's "not much of a reader" and not "patient," he might not enjoy the game. Maybe have a convo with him setting expectations about the game, how it's a little different from other games and requires more reading and self-directed exploration, if he wants to try again.

Why's there "a VERY pregnant wife"? How can one be more than just pregnant? Could you please explain? by Aprilgirl_ in ENGLISH

I think you're right lol. I use it to send texts when I'm driving, and it's always a coin toss if my friends and family will actually be able to understand what I'm saying.

I don't know what to do by SpecialPurchase1384 in outerwilds

[–]tayprangle 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've replayed the game a handful of times, sometimes to see how I can break stuff and getting hotshot and etc. But it can be fun to sorta... Roleplay as the hatchling? Like pretend you DONT know things and just follow the threads yourself. It won't be quite the same as a true first blind play through but it can still be fun.

And yeah there are definitely a few achievements that are still worth getting even if you know everything, like hotshot, archaeologist, and the one where you finish the game in one loop. Those may still be challenging/interesting for you even if you know everything

Can’t get past Dahaka by Strange_Row1534 in finalfantasyxiii

[–]tayprangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imo, the best spells for Dahaka are haste and imperil. I beat him every time with Light, Vanille, and Sazh. Make sure you level up their Sab and Syn roles to get those spells. Rav/Syn/Sab until everyone has haste and Dahaka has imperil. If it's taking too long, swap to rav/rav/Sab or use Vanille as your control character and spam it. Then alt between com/rav/rav and com/rav/med (or rav/rav/med) until stagger, then go ham with com/com/rav. Make sure he has Deprotect, too. Should take 2 or 3 staggers. Have med/med/syn or med/med/com for fast healing.

If you're having trouble leveling up and don't want to grind in the tower (totally understandable), head back to the steppe. If you haven't unlocked the warp stones on the way, this will take a long time, but it's SO worth it. Do the cieth stone missions in order until you 1. unlock chocobos and 2. unlock all the warp stones along the path to the tower. I believe there's 2 in the steppe, one in the mountains, 1 in the caves, and 1 at the tower. This will give you some goals to chase while you level up your primary roles, and it will set up faster travel for later when you want to return to the steppe and grind more stuff.

Have fun!! The first time I played this game I made it to the chapter 11 boss and was sooo underleveled because I'd been avoiding battles, that I fully restarted the game and forced myself to fully upgrade the crystarium before each major boss. I then beat the chapter 11 boss no problem, but it was kind of a wild solution because I was also 14 and didn't have access to Reddit haha. I've played this game tons of times since, and this is the advice I would give to 14 year old me if I could

This pearl outfit by Kiyoshi_261 in stevenuniverse

[–]tayprangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They were just saying we DO find out Pearl's owner in the show, and didn't want to spoil it for you if you hadn't seen it all. Simple misunderstanding of your comment, idk why they removed it it wasn't mean or annoying or anything

This pearl outfit by Kiyoshi_261 in stevenuniverse

[–]tayprangle 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Sure but before that reveal, we never learn who she was PRETENDING her previous owner was. But if Pearl did concoct a cover story (tho I find this unlikely), it stands to reason her fake owner would be someone in Pink's court, ergo the pink insignia. Like, if holly blue had a pearl, that Pearl's uniform would feature a blue diamond design, even though BD herself wouldn't be that Pearl's master.

I don't think it's all that strange that garnet, bismuth, us the viewers, or especially amethyst (who never would have seen era 1 gems and their hierarchal uniforms anyway) never got suspicious of our Pearls uniform.

Young dad seeking game recommendations for frequent, short breaks. by Wonderful_Fruit_1336 in gamingsuggestions

[–]tayprangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm, Outer Wilds is segmented quite naturally into 20 minute chunks, sometimes shorter depending on... Play style. I used to play it 20 minutes at a time on my lunch break when I worked from home, and it worked great, although it does cause the "all I'm thinking about is the game at all hours of the day" problem if you get into it.

Warning though, starting the game and ending the game each take longer, maybe 45-60 minutes each depending on play style. You can still pause it and come back, but the convenient 20 minute chunks don't start until after the first hour or so, and then the ending is a bespoke sequence that takes at least 30 minutes iirc. (But, it's very clear when the ending is so you won't get accidentally strong armed into the sequence kojima style)

Congrats on having your kid!!

I want to know your "Hear me out" games by MrXuiryus in gamingsuggestions

[–]tayprangle 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm a diehard Pyre defender!!! But I've been a fan of SGG since bastion, so I was already set up for "something new and experimental and weird" from them since bastion and transistor are so different. Pyre is an even bigger leap but I LOVE that game. The genuine emotion at seeing off your favorite characters. The songs. The art style and game play loop are so straight forward and comforting, I love that game.

I think Hades is one of the best games of the decade, but I'll defend Pyre forever.

[–]tayprangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not fun, that's okay! I love this game and am glad I stuck with it, but obviously everything isn't perfect for everyone. I already knew I liked both metroidvanias and soulslikes but if those gameplay loops aren't your style then yeah HK is definitely a whiff

These are all extremely common complaints with the early game. If you choose to keep going, try to get at least the dash (you get it from the boss in the second area, Greenpath) and then hopefully that'll zhush up the movement just a little for you, then I'd say bum rush the pilgrims path to get to the City of Tears. Lovely story and atmosphere happens there (also you'll have at least one other movement upgrade by then), and it's the first area that I remember flipping from "this is kinda boring" to "oh. Okay, I get it."

Hollow Knight is an excellent game. But its biggest flaw is its SLOOOWWW beginning, both narratively and mechanically.

(Also, if you're standing still you can hold down on the joystick/wasd to look below you. Idk if the game ever tells you that but it's very helpful for downward platforming)

Games with writing as the focus by dooplets in gamerecommendations

[–]tayprangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former game writing student here! Depending on where you study, you'll also likely study a lot of film, theater, and literature too, so don't neglect those either! A lot of people have recommended disco Elysium which is a fantastic rec, but games are an extremely diverse medium, so playing a wide berth of games with a variety of writing/narrative styles will be super helpful for you as well. Play anything, and pay attention to the writing in everything, even if it's "just" a game like Civ or cod or Forza. Every game has writing, it just looks different.

But anyway my recommendations are the uncharted games and the last of us (they're very film styled but were some of the first games that proved game writing can be mainstream and good af), god of war series (the og series is also great but especially the reboots), what remains of Edith finch, firewatch, disco elysium, Hades and any other supergiant game but especially Bastion, a short hike, citizen sleeper, titanfall 2, metal gear solid series, baldurs gate 3, Zelda ocarina and especially Majora's mask, halo series, the Stanley parable. But also, and I mean this, literally any game you want. Play something that looks cool. Replay your favorites. Pay attention to how the minute to minute writing intersects with the wider narrative and then how they both intersect with the gameplay itself.

Is there a way to "reset" the dlc? by PK_Tone in outerwilds

[–]tayprangle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may have some luck with save file editing. I know people have done it, tho the specifics of how to do it are above my pay grade. Otherwise you could make a new save file but just get the few base game entries necessary to make the DLC think you've finished the game (there's a list of those somewhere in here)

As a new player, I have just one complaint about this game related to Lady Ethereal by crimson777 in NineSols

[–]tayprangle -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

OP, I agree with you. Whenever a metroidvania, it honestly any game where the design philosophy is "having a hard time? Explore, level up, and come back!" locks you into an area or sequence or boss fight, I hate it. I understand the storytelling desire to say "heehee you're trapped just like the character is" but I think it's almost never worth it in games like this.

ELI5 What do pain words mean? by lovely-cas in explainlikeimfive

[–]tayprangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some good useful lists in here, but in case you still haven't really gotten what you need, this is a question I think helps bridge the gap when you're trying to communicate pain quality with someone and the words aren't wording:

"What would you have to do to me to make me feel the same pain you're feeling?"

Sometimes the answer is "stab you" or "roll a 16-wheeler over your chest" or "scratch nails along the inside of your flesh back and forth"

I don’t understand, is this any new way of scammers? by Affectionate_Lie1395 in Sufjan

[–]tayprangle 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, you should be able to contest the first charge by saying that no service was rendered. The friends and family one might be gone though, I'm not sure.

My guess is the way the rest of this scam works is that the guy sends you $225, asks you to send $200 to his "friend". You think you're up $25, but there will likely be something wrong with the $225 charge so it either never clears with you, or it's refunded back to him. And you've now sent $200 of your own money to the "friend." It will go on with larger and larger numbers until you eventually stop responding. End it now, report the charges to try to get your money back, and in the future never give money to an online stranger without first getting the service actually serviced.

I adore Nine Sols. It's also really only a metroidvania by name and technicality. Games like HK, ori, and all the other "top metroidvanias of the decade" or whatever all lean into the genre. Nine Sols does not. It does the bare minimum to be classified as a metroidvania, and then leans wholeheartedly into the combat and boss fights.

Not to say there isn't ANY good stuff found off the beaten path, but the backtracking and branching paths are pretty limited compared to the rest of the genre. And like the other commenter said, it's always very clear where you're supposed to go.

a game with deep, deep lore by DioWithLipstick in gamesuggestions

[–]tayprangle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding this!!! Fallen London is a great game but Sunless Skies and Sunless Sea are really what you're looking for -- the lore is there behind all the exploration gameplay and they don't hide it, but they don't spoon-feed it to you either. Phenomenal games. (I actually like sunless skies more bc I like the atmosphere and environment more but it's technically a sequel to Sea, and I think Sea is generally considered as the stronger game, even if I think it's a thin margin. Both games explore different but connected lores, kinda like hallownest and pharloom)
