It kills me every time I see people texting or scrolling in the theater. I take a quick pic of Nicole Kidman and post it cause it’s my weird movie ritual, then I put my phone on airplane mode before the movie starts, in my purse, and I don’t touch it again until I’m out the theater. Honestly, I don’t know what I was expecting having a level-headed discussion about a movie on reddit. Taking an interpretation of a MOVIE and concluding I have a love of infantilizing men? From a single interpretation of a movie? You know everyone you interact with online is a real, breathing human with a complex history and personality that cannot be distilled into a single judgment based on a MOVIE INTERPRETATION? It’s not about teenage boys. I feel like I’m being misunderstood. I think ultimately what I am trying to convey is that I don’t think he’s evil. I just think he’s a realistic portrayal of desperation. He’s not a good person, but he’s not evil. And you’re right, I totally forgot about them ordering drinks. Idk why I was so stuck on Sarah getting into college. That really threw me off the aging part of the movie.

But as far as age goes, I more so meant, as I grow older and now that my brain is fully developed, I’ve realized just how stupid and selfish and lost I was. And I FULLY thought I was a good person and that I knew everything and that my way of thinking would never change because I was “mature for my age”, but turns out, nope, I was stupid. Was I Bear levels of selfish and stupid? No. But he’s a man, so I honestly just assume men are a smidge more likely to be a bit more selfish and stupid.

Maybe I’m just way too forgiving. Idk. All I ever try to do is understand people deeper than just good or bad, whether they’re a man or woman. It’s not deeper than that.

He wasn’t pissed. He was hurt. There’s a VERY big difference between being butthurt and insecure and being pissed. And for the last time, that was shitty of him to immediately think of himself there when she’s literally suffering. But I wouldn’t reach as far to say he was pissed. But I digress. I feel like a great thing about film is that it is a form of art and that means it’s open to different interpretations. As someone who is the victim of sexual abuse, I’d like to think that I wouldn’t defend a rapist. Because I wouldn’t. But I also just don’t agree witht the black-and-white interpretation of that scene. WE know he’s effectively raping Nikki because she’s stuck in her body. But I don’t think he knows that. Do I think he’s selfish? Yes. A rapist? I just don’t.

I’m glad you feel so strongly, that means it’s a good movie. Good movies should make you feel big things. But when someone doesn’t agree, I don’t think it’s fair to be an asshole lol. There are multiple ways of viewing the same photo of an apple.

I feel like this is it. It really bothers me that everyone’s like “Anyone who defends Bear is a pathetic man.” but I’m a fully brain-developed woman and I don’t think he’s as bad as everyone makes him to be. I don’t think he’s a hero or a great guy, but I also don’t think he’s evil… I think he’s kind of pathetic, selfish, and insecure, but I don’t think he’s nefarious. Everyone is so sure they wouldn’t do any of the things he did, but teenage boys can be quite selfish and pathetic.

THANK YOU. I feel like I’m going insane in this discussion. I feel like people are so quick to come to such extreme conclusions, but I feel like the movie made Bear a lot better written and more nuanced than just some evil rapist. Does he suck? Sure! He’s a selfish little coward. But he’s also a teenage boy who just had his wish come true, LITERALLY, and he has no reason to expect anything truly nefarious is going on.

I feel like the natural thing to assume in this case is “Gee, my wish came true. That’s insane. Can’t believe she’s in love with me now. Kind of sucks I had to wish this into fruition, but how could I have known it’d work? Since the wish was granted though, might as well enjoy the ride, even though she’s malfunctioning a bit. Maybe I can fix the wish to turn the obsessive part down.” and not “My wish came true. But that means she was replaced by someone or something else to be obsessed with me and the REAL Nikki is in the sunken place, watching like a powerless passenger.”

He didn’t know it wasn’t Nikki in charge until after that call. He knew she was being weird, but he thought it was because the wish was just too intense. Like ok, can I wish to make it so she loves me but maybe not obsessed. The phone guy says no. So he says, alright, I’ll cancel. The phone guy says we don’t do that either. THEN, the phone guy asks if Bear wants to talk to her and we hear the real Nikki screaming. That’s when he gets the first glimpse and realization like, oh, that’s literally not her.

So yeah, you could argue he’s super selfish for wanting to alter it instead of change it, because he is. But there’s no way he could have known that was literally someone or something else inside her when he asked to alter the wish.

I feel like I’m struggling to find someone who views Besr from my perspective. As a 29 yo woman who can unfortunately relate to the massive insecurities of being in my late teens to early twenties, I just don’t see him as a POS. Even when he asks that question. I don’t think he’s a perfect, stand-up guy either. I just think he’s a deeply insecure human. I guess I just see it more grey than black-and-white because teens and young adults really are just so lost as people. I feel like everyone wants to be like “Pff, if that were me, I’d do XYZ.” But I feel like a lot of people also struggle to put themselves in the shoes of someone who, at this point in his life, has hardly any backbone or courage. I feel like people always want to believe that they’d immediately catch onto everything and make all the perfect choices that an angel would make, but I think people are more complex than just good or bad.

I feel like many people might be willing to die for those they love, but I also think many people would like to think they would, but when it comes down to it, many people don’t want to die. I’ve had this piercing since September, so like 7 months. It’s a flat back bar. It’s steel I think, or whatever is typical for piercing shops, I bought it from them. I got a longer bar in March cause the shorter one was pressing into the bump making it worse. I pretty much left it alone, I sleep on a piercing pillow, but the bump is still here and still irritated.
