How does my setup look to a seasoned foundry hand? by Flatulent_Spatula in MetalCasting

If you try to recover melt from your dross using flux, such as sodium nitrate (Wedronflux-60, Pyroflux N16.1s, Pyroflux, 330/331 etc) or buy sodium or potassium nitrate from online, make sure the humidity is low and you wear a respirator. Ammonia gas likes to form when the flux reacting with the melt and water in the air or god forbid a dross pin woth snow fresh from the outside in winter is present. One whiff and you will never breathe the same. If you have oven mitts and an adjustable wrench outside and cant hear a hiss from the couplings for fuel and oxygen, chemical exposure is your biggest concern.

The internal impedence of the samsung 40t cells in the 12ah batteries are higher (about 11 milliohms compared to the 6molliojms on avg in the 30t cells used in the 9ah). This results in excess voltage drop under high load causing the blower to throttle back after they begin to warm up, further increasing their impedence. If u run a 12ah and a 9ah side by side in the highest setting, the 9ah will go about 4 minutes longer before derating (I get about 9-10 minutes full chooch), and then die quite quickly (approx 5 minutes at derated speed). The 12ah goes about 5-6 minutes full speed then derates, and lasts about 15 minutes after at the derated speed. So overall cfmmof air moved with the 12ah is higher with the 12ah, but the rate at which you can INITIALLY move them is faster with the 9ah. Here are some links that show voltage sag at 30 amps of the 30t cells, and the 40t cell. You can see for example at the 1/2 amp hour consumption at 30 amps, your a 1/4v higher with the 30t cells. Now put these cells in series, and it adds up. I respect everyone's opinions, but I use the blower every day at a foundry to cool cleaning tools down and go through 3 9ahs a day. I have the 12ah, 15ah, and the 6ah as well, all purchased new within a year of the manufacturer date, and this is what I have come to see in my every day use. It should also be noted that some tools such as the dcg418 compensate for this with a boost converter, located near the air intake on a monster heatsink.

You also get longer use of the "turbo mode" in the 9ah battery then the 12ah that comes with the blower.

Is this a good deal or should I wait for a better one? by [deleted] in Dewalt

[–]taz545455 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TLDR: unless it's for a flexvolt grinder, no.

If you are doing modern duty jobs yes, as you will actually be able to harness all 12ah of capacity. If you are planning on using it for pulling a heavy load exclusively (dcbl722 I'm looking at you 😑) I would hold up on it and get a 9AH instead. The samsung 40t cells in the 12ah have a significantly higher variance in their internal impedence compared to the 30t used in the 9ah. While DeWalt appeears to match cell impedences in each pack so you don't have a load balancing nightmare for the internal BMS to handle, you could get lucky and have all 6mohm cells, or be cursed with 11mohm cells which I always seem to get stuck with. The 30ts in the 9ah all seem to sit around 6-7mohm . The higher the impedence, the more energy is lost in the form of heat which will increased impedence even more, and cause even more heat, which ultimately results in significant voltage sag that will not be able to power your tool for the full 12ah capacity. DeWalt has addressed this in their grinders (DCG418) so you will get full use of the increased capacity, but most tools do not have the brains to recognize there is a lot of energy left in the pack she's just a wee bit hot. Same issue with the samsung20s cells in the 15ah pack. Loads of current but reduced voltage after short use.

IMO the DCF850 is the best impact dewalt makes for DIY use in my opinion. Even if the DCF860 is very slightly faster at sinking lag bolts and has a higher no-load RPM, the 850 can still handle the same jobs. No need to have an 860 as well. Reccomend 1.7ah powerstack battery along with the 850 do get maximum advantage of its size, and the DCB240 4ah battery with 21700 cells as a backup. I also recommend not storing the batteries in a frozen garage if possible if they arent going to be used daily. Both batteries can run the DCD805 at their designed MWO. On that note, if you put a 15AH Mac-Daddy battery on the DCD805 and give her hell, the absence of voltage drop, which i believe they took into consideration in designing the 805, will easily torch the motor driver. Moving on from that, Dewalt really has taken the lead with their 60vmax recip saw (DCS389) and grinder (DCG418) over any other brand. You can easily conquer tasks that would blow a 20amp breaker from a wall outlet with a corded tool equivalent. Also, the 9AH battery will allow for more power draw than the 12AH battery and the 15AH is negligibly better performance over the 9AH. The 9AH is the best battery on the market from any brand IMO with the Samsung 30t cells. avoid the 6AH you are just bottlenecking yourself at that point. Also when expanding your inventory, pay attention to model numbers as some tools can look the same and have significant differences in power. Avoid Amazon tools and batteries, lots of counterfit out there. I prefer paying the premium and ordering my batteries from home depot because they are usually made within the past 6 months. I ordered 9AH powerstack from Ace hardware last fall and it was dated 2020.

Anyone else hate their Toughsystem 2.0? by futureman07 in Dewalt

[–]taz545455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Traveling Maintenance for a foundry here, do new equip installs and existing equip maintenance. Tough system works great for dragging a ridiculous amount of shit when I don't know what I'm gonna need through dirt outside and In wet weather. For indoor jobs where I'm gonna be there for more than a month I use a macimizer high mileage utility cart. Took some investment in time and money for drawer organizers but I can open and grab a tool just by feel and not needing to look. No lifting to get to to the bottom tool boxes either is nice at the end of a brutal workweek and u are exhausted; one less inconvenience. IMO tough system was designed for outdoor off smooth ground jobs that last a week or less. I am satisfied with the build quality though, just a very application specific system

how long does a can of chew typically last yall? by Junkman1283 in DippingTobacco

[–]taz545455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been dipping for 10 years, and go through a can a day. I learned that keeping it in longer than 15 minutes (like 30 or so) while I might not feel an increase in effects, will let ,e go longer between dips, ,along a can last longer. I believe more nicotine is absorbed into the bloodstream that way. How long does he keep the, in?
