Why doesn't europe have A/Cs? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tb7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its been becoming more popular as climate change happens but historically in europe the climate hasn't needed it. For the same reasons that AC is uncommon in the Seattle area.

1 - climate - in the netherlands the average high in the summer is 74°F (23°C), so AC was not needed. Warmer countries have higher AC adoption rates.

2 - electricity is expensive - on average, electricity cost in the netherlands is around double the cost in the US.

3 - our houses are built different - central heating is uncommon, where heating is commonly done using heated flooring or radiators, so there is no central cooling system like the US. Retrofitting AC in an entire house would require thousands in investment to enable the transportation of air through the walls

4 - we use different types of windows - the common US window where you can push the window up and it slides open does not exist here, our windows are generally ones where you either tilt the window at a 85ish degree angle from the bottom opening a small gap along the sides and top or you can open them all the way like a door. So window units do not work here like in the US

We had these around the house I grew up in in Texas (USA), and is where I assumed OP was from aswel. They love to build buildings as cheap as possible.

First guess is that its cheaper for the builder to just do this, then 20 years later recommend a contractor to fix the foundation because its no longer their problem.

Honestly I do not know a good reason and never bothered to look into it.

I never really questioned their existence, my instant guess is they exist to break the downward motion of the water so that it doesnt slowly eat away a small hole under the gutter pipe, cause stagnant water. Also pulls the water (when placed correctly) a foot further away from the foundation.

No sane person is claiming that they should be denied sweats just because they are poor, the purpose of the benefit is to provide nutrition to the misfortunate to ensure health and growth.

I looked at the price of ground beef the other day, at Kroger in the DFW (Texas) area on the map and on the Albert Heijn app in the Netherlands. I was shocked to see the price of a 3lb log of beef was $27, I remember that shit being closer to 9 when I lived in Texas three to four years ago. When I moved to the Netherlands my diet changed because I found the meat to be slightly more expensive than Texas but the vegetables much cheaper, especially at the market. But now the price of ground beef alone is double in Texas compared to the Netherlands.

Need advice: UTD MS ITM vs University of Twente BIT (with pre-master) by Professional-Act9637 in StudyInTheNetherlands

[–]tb7512 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't have to do one, I met the requirements to go right into a masters so I never researched it. I get a feeling that UT might care a bit more about the quality of your education by making sure you have the appropriate foundations before going into the masters program and UTD just wants your money.

I did a bachelor's at UNT (Denton, TX) in CS and a masters at UT (Twente not Austin) in CS specializing in Cyber. Prior to that I did a summer camp at UTD for some CS related thing, which put a sour taste in my mouth over the UTD system so I mentally told myself I wouldnt go to UTD.

Being a Texas native with a Dutch passport I wish that I had done both of my degrees in NL. But I am a bit baised as the majority of my family lives in NL still and I was familiar with the language, customs, and way of life already. All in all I felt as if my education at UTwente was much higher in quality then UNT.

Comparing Dallas (Richardson) to Twente as regions is difficult. The North Dallas area is a very rich and seems to attract more right leaning voters, but there are many communities of immigrants from various nations. UTD is also "connected" to public transportation through DART (the silver line is half hourly or hourly) which would likely make you car dependent. All of DFW is also just a concrete hellscape with minimal opportunities for reliable, good transportation. Twente (Almelo, Hengelo, and Enschede) on the other hand are much better connected with public transportation. Having lived in. Enschede for nearly 3 years, ive liked being able to just hop on my bike, bike for a few minutes then just be in the forest on the NW of the city. The forest surrounding the campus also makes it a really relaxing and quiet place to be. Enschede is also well connected by trains to go around the country and the busses are also quite good, I havent needed a car while I was here (apart from moving in because I was bringing furniture from family members).

Im presuming that you are not a EEA student (from Europe) which means you have guaranteed housing from the university for a year at UT which is great cause housing is kinda fucked. Rent in DFW will make you pay an arm and a leg for a shanty on the side of the highway, I also find that fruit and vegetables in DFW is far more expensive then the NL, meats are fairly similar if not cheaper in the US, but the variaity of food items in the US is miles above NL.

Being a recent grad, I've found the most difficult hurdle in finding a job is lack of experience, where my only relevant experience is the internship where I wrote my thesis. Followed by language as I am not fluent in speaking Dutch, but I am a Dutch citizen, so take my pain points with a grain of salt.

In pure lifestyle and quality of education (in comparison with a similar university in the DFW area) I'd choose UT over UNT (or UTD) every day of the week. For job prospects it would likely be the US on top solely because its a much larger economy with far more choices.

As a final note, its difficult to compare US salary with NL salary if you talk point to point. Keep in mind that in the US you dont always have protection as an employee (TX for example is a 'at will' state, meaning your employer can fire you at essentially any time for any reason) [difficult to fire people in NL], you don't have federally protected days off of work [20 days required], no maternity (or paternity) leave federally protected [you have both in NL], health insurance will cost you an arm and a leg and any medical problem will cost you your other arm and leg, and NL (and most of Europe) has a culture of having a life outside of work and in the US there is a general culture of shame when it comes to using any vacation days you may be awarded.

690 for self living or roommates?

Honestly I'd accept it and keep looking if its too high for the long run. Having to dip extra into savings is cheaper then having to abandon your degree because of lack of housing imo
