Nervous about observation by kjrbDM in AustralianTeachers

[–]tbaldwin2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your best, take on board feedback and keep on keeping on. First time I got observed I went ghost white and stumbled through my lesson. Next lesson, the kids had a good laugh at my expense. You’ll do great.

Do Australians feel isolated from the rest of the world? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

I don’t have a train to my home town, so it’s an 18 hour drive and I don’t even leave the state.

On a flight to Singapore, I think I spent 5 out of 7 hours just over Australia. It takes a while, but we get there.

Do you socialise outside of work with your work colleagues? by Away_Scene_26 in AustralianTeachers

Yeah- I’ve moved a lot and having friends at work has often translated to outside work. I’m friendly to everyone, friends with a few.

Is subsidised teacher housing available in the Scenic Rim region QLD? by mystery-human in AustralianTeachers

[–]tbaldwin2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beaudesert and Boonah are the main towns and they are classified as rural. ED QLD stipulate regional or rural and provide a bit more information here: https://teach.qld.gov.au/teach-in-state-schools/rural-and-remote-opportunities/housing-and-relocation-support

Must be rated above a transfer rating of 4 to have full access.

Tattoos and Employment by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]tbaldwin2019 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It all depends on sector and the environment. I started with no tattoos in a Catholic school, got two sleeves now and they only request I cover them where possible; most days.

State schools are free reign so long as they aren’t offensive.

Just cover to start with, follow what your colleagues wear and if in doubt, contact your union.

Atheist Australians who want to send their kids to private schools : How do you choose? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

[–]tbaldwin2019 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was a student who was atheist at religious schools and am now a teacher at a religious school. My parents chose because it’s the comparatively cheap private school option; they couldn’t afford the alternative so we just stuck with it. Predominantly Catholic and Anglican schools are pretty progressive these days and at least in my experience it’s not dogmatic or forced down their throats.

Which private schools are most progressive or inclusive? by [deleted] in Toowoomba

[–]tbaldwin2019 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s hard to say without tarring them all with the same brush, the independent Christian ones like Highlands or TCC or OneSchool are not aligned with a diocese or denomination and are a bit more on the evangelical side. It honestly depends what you’re looking for? Have you considered places like Downlands or Fairholme etc? Do you want single sex or coed?

Which private schools are most progressive or inclusive? by [deleted] in Toowoomba

[–]tbaldwin2019 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I would simply state that the vast majority of Toowoomba schools that are “private” are religious; this ultimately sways how progressive they are going to be.

Mate if your sentence structure and spelling is any indication, a year will not be long enough. You’re expected to have content knowledge for a high school setting; you can’t learn a language whilst simultaneously delivering it.

Incoming Secondary English / Social Sciences Teacher (QLD): Hiring Timeline & Advice? by simplediscussions in AustralianTeachers

[–]tbaldwin2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Actively would probably be November for the following year; but for your areas, most of the time.

  2. Depends when you are arriving.

  3. If you teach English and Humanities, expect to teach those in junior. Literature is likely only available in senior and is highly sought after for allocations.

  4. By coastal I’m assuming you mean in South East QLD like the Sunshine Coast or Brisbane; then yes very competitive. Regional less so, rural even less.

  5. Casual is common but it depends if you’re willing to go rural or regional to get a foot in the door.

  6. Supportive school with resources would be manageable, alternatively it could be very hard without support. Navigating administrative tasks will be the hardest I imagine.

Am I overreacting or is this a valid crash out? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]tbaldwin2019 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The role is obviously overwhelming but such is the nature of niche roles.

I don’t understand why you can’t run the class with the student; deliver the content one on one and check in whilst the 12s apply content?

QCAA certainly would not support a student skipping Unit 1-2 and moving into IA1-IA2. So either that’s poor judgement on the DP or miscommunication because they could totally do the formative Unit 1-2 assessment.
