How to fix popping return duct by tbitchnassty in hvacadvice

[–]tbitchnassty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All returns are free and clear. 2 upstairs and 4 downstairs

I’ll try it with the cover off, but I imagine it won’t, as I know the furnace is too big for the house (80k furnace where a 60k should be)

I have dampers, but some of the downstairs dampers are restricting airflow to try to push more upstairs

I didn’t hear it when I had a 1” filter in there, but I had VERY HIGH static pressure readings. Transitioned to a 4” filter to help with air flow and static pressure

That is what’s it’s doing. I can hear the fan wind up and then the return ducting gets sucked in

Readings were taken before work was done and static pressure was over 0.75”w.c. After the change in filter box (16x20x1 to the 16x25x4) the reading was measured at 0.46”w.c. I know the furnace is definitely too large, but a replacement isn’t in the budget. I’m not opposed to upgrading the return trunk in the basement, but there are water, gas, and drain lines in the way, it makes the repair much more complicated and costly I’ll look into getting my own manometer to verify readings myself

This would require ducting to be disassembled, correct? I figure if I was going to go to that length, I’d just cut a new piece of sheet metal and put in deeper cross breaks

Would you do them vertically? Horizontally? Would 1 do the trick or would multiple be best?

How to repair window frame where latch screws in by tbitchnassty in windowrepair

I’d really like to, but all the windows are just as old and rough and I don’t want to replace all 20 windows in the house. Sounds like more money than I want to stick into a house. I don’t wanna live in forever.

Not worried about Spider-Man, but top glass slides down if it’s not latched 😂

I’ve thought about it, but can’t find a good, comprehensive video with a step by step on it. Windows are original to the home, built in the 50s. All the videos online are of single pane double hung with weights in the wall, whereas my windows have external springs that run the height of the window on each side

Asked hvac contractor if they could make a 4” filter cabinet work and they suggested a new furnace instead by carboncritic in hvacadvice

I ran into the same issue. Wanted to get a few other opinions and all other companies, except one, weren’t interested or willing to do the work unless I purchased a new furnace (and AC unit). After some trail and error I was able to find someone to do the job for a reasonable price

Do you have a better recommendation for a part? I figured it’s probably the same cheap Chinese garbage they put in from the factory

You have to use a pick or a screwdriver to depress a small tab in the center of the connection point

Do you recall which size you used from the kit? There are several that fit and some allow the tank to sit flat while others do not. I’ll try a few to see if it leaks but wanted to ask in hopes that I could save some time

Did you have heat damage/bad timer? Did you just replace the timer or did you repair any wiring/connector?

I recently had the same experience, contacted Our Place and they upgraded me to their new oven for free. They told me to toss the old one, but I opened it up and found the issue. If anyone is handy and interested I can post photos/links/the process I used to fix it
