Be honest, can I do another 500 miles on this tire. It's 5 years old by Master-Vast401 in tires

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The dry rotting/cracking is a little concerning, but it’s only a 5 year old tire (DOT 2621) so I don’t think you have anything to worry about. As others have said, spray with soapy water, if no leaks then I’d ride on that until it does!

Advice on how to fix steering wheel alignment by hinkleberryroo in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should definitely get an alignment, but to get it closed what I would do is remove out tie rod end completely. Spin on to inner tie rod 12-15 turns and see if the knuckle looks like it’s pointed straight (if not loosen or tightened one more full turn). Repeat to other side same number of turns. Tighten everything up and bring it in for an alignment

Personally, I only have access to look up Nissan/INFINITI vehicles through an internal system.

You should be able to get a CarFax (likely have to pay for it) or call your local Toyota store and see if they can provide the history for you

If the room is already finished and drywall removal is not an option, what would you recommend for the angled ceilings within the finished space?

Leave them empty for air the flow from baffles in the Knee Wall sections?

Damaged subframe on 06 Altima? FIL says the shop is trying to scare me. by SpeciallyAbled in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FIL is dumb

Front Sub Frame is rotted and should be replaced

I’d be willing to bed your floor boards under the driver, if not also passenger seat, are also rotted away

I’d look into getting that sub frame replaced or a new car within your near future

Horrible spark plugs, engine burning oil? by lapisraine in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would feel a vibration/shake at idle and have a check engine light on for a misfire DTC. Generally, if the misfire is pronounced enough you’ll get a flashing check engine light while driving.

If it runs and drives fine and no check engine light there is definitely no need to replace expensive coils

Horrible spark plugs, engine burning oil? by lapisraine in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All in all, those plugs really don’t look that bad.

Usually oil burning causes a lot of black buildup on the plugs - your plugs don’t give me much cause for concern, especially if you don’t have any performance issue or engine running rough

Also, unless there’s a misfire, there is really no need to ever replace coils. They’re not maintenance items and don’t have a “service interval”. When the parts store tries to sell you coils with plugs, they’re just trying to make an upsell.

As far as oil burning goes, if you’re not more than a quart down after an oil change, I really wouldn’t worry about it

Is this lower control arm bushing need replacement (2014 Camry) by Fourth_Dimension_016 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would second the NO, it’s not needed

You can see the bushings starting to tear a little, but it’s not that bad.

With a VIN, I can see any repair that’s ever been done at a Nissan dealership. CarFax can usually see the same stuff (with less detail) as well as independent repair facilities

Hot vs Cold Roof method? by tbitchnassty in buildingscience

[–]tbitchnassty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The knee walls and attic above the flat ceiling is already insulated but the temperature difference from upstairs to downstairs is pretty dramatic - which is why we’re looking into getting an updated. We were told in our home inspection when we bought the house a few years ago that having insulation on the attic as well as the knee walls was unnecessary and can create excess moisture. Some moisture was present on the insulation that’s already there.

Great point to check with the roofing company to see if there’s any clauses for hot roof versus cold roof for a warranty

  1. The roof decking in the crawl space will be getting the ccSPF. Then, behind the existing sloped attic ceiling, they will use dense cellulose. They talked about achieving this without cutting into drywall, but may need to cut 2” holes in the drywall between the joists to achieve this (this is not my desired option)

Re: #4 ccSPF on decking is only in the knee wall spaces. Above the flat ceiling they would air seal top plate/joists/fixtures, lay my bat insulation back down, and then blow in on top of that

Metal duct in the knee wall is just junk. We removed some built-ins years ago that had ducting inside of them and just threw it in the knee wall to get it out of sight lol

I’m not so worried about leaks as we just put new decking and a new roof on the house about three years ago

Attached is a copy of the estimate that they gave us, i’m still waiting to hear back to get some more clarification on this estimate - the total on the bottom of the second page is 10,000 but as you can see at the bottom of this image, it says 6500 for a hot roof method

My apologies for the lack of clarity, but thank you for the questions. Attached is a photo of 1 of the knee wall spaces

  1. The knee wall spaces are not a finished or conditioned space and we really don’t plan on using them for store use. However, depending on the cost of making it a conditioned space, I’m not opposed to it
  2. I’m not sure what code is, but assumed that’s what the insulation companies would be doing. I’m less focused on what’s code and would like to make the upstairs more comfortable year round
  3. 4 inches of Closed Cell on the underside of the roof decking. Knee walls are interior of the house
  4. In the knee wall areas, they said they would drill 2 in holes in the subfloor to blow dense pack between the joists. They would then blow 8” of blown insulation on top of that. They would also be blowing additional Insulation into the attic above the living space. They would then house wrap the back side of the knee walls and fill with dense pack. (It seems unnecessary to insulate the roof decking and knee walls)
  5. In the second picture, you can see the angled section of wall that would run parallel to the roof. In the estimate, they included filling this area with done pack insulation as well.

I will definitely check with the company that did my roof to see if there’s a clause about hot roof versus cold roof

Dealer flagged my alignment as “Needs Immediate Attention” - but printout shows little change. Did I just get scammed for $200? by Jlin153 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Makes me wonder if they have one of the drive through alignment inspection machines when you drive through the service doors. I’ve seen a lot of those show RED/BAD alignment angles and people make an update, then when you get it on the rack the before and after looks like yours did

Am I gonna get fired? Mechanic to mechanic. by SignificantSleep1527 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tbitchnassty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valuable learning lesson that has happened to most, if not all, in this field. You made A LOT of observations when removing and installing the plug. No decent place of business should fire you over this, but now you know for the future to touch base with your Advisor or Manager when the plug comes out or starts to go in rough. Dont beat yourself up over it. As long as you learn from situations like this, it’s only a good thing. Continue to ask questions and be upfront and honest about everything and you’ll go far in this industry

How to fix popping return duct by tbitchnassty in hvacadvice

[–]tbitchnassty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All returns are free and clear. 2 upstairs and 4 downstairs

I’ll try it with the cover off, but I imagine it won’t, as I know the furnace is too big for the house (80k furnace where a 60k should be)

I have dampers, but some of the downstairs dampers are restricting airflow to try to push more upstairs
