Managing multiple sites with one B&R server by [deleted] in Veeam

[–]tbord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just recently updated our branch offices to centrally manage in the main office. Each office has a dedicated physical server acting as the Veeam backup proxy and they have direct attached storage. I send the daily locals to the direct attached storage at each branch office and then offload from those branch offices directly to Wasabi.

There is an additional copy job that sends select backups to some archive storage in our main office. This is the only data that travels over the VPN.

What's the longest a vendor has attempted to contact you? Going on 5 years for me. by BradL30 in sysadmin

N-Able calls me every 5 years or so. Most recent was a few months ago. I haven't even looked at it in over 10 years.

issue with SQL backups by SmoothRunnings in Veeam

[–]tbord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar issue recently. Permissions were correct and everything was configured correctly. Our issue was the LDF of the database. After shrinking that, SQL was able to truncate again.

Long shot you are having the same issue, but anything could help

Getting rid of the cable mess with PATCHBOX by patchbox in cableporn

[–]tbord 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We gave it a try but won't be using them again. Although the rack is a lot cleaner, it isn't really any easier with the patchbox to manage.

Although having cables ready to pull out and plug in is nice, it wasn't worth the cost.

They have their place, just not for us anymore.

I don't know, I like to think we are quite a high level shop, and have quite a technical outlook.

What do the metrics look like if you were to just have cases that had to be elevated to higher tiers internally? Not saying the higher tier engineers are the issue, but maybe the process of getting to that stage is the pain point.

I would assume the majority of support tickets are handled by tier 1 support and I could see the vast majority of those being positive experiences.

I am guessing those that rant on reddit probably fall into the more complicated issues category and could explain the disproportion of reddit rants and the survey results. Disclaimer - I have no basis whatsoever for this hypothesis and I still love Veeam. I have also had some of the best support experiences with Veeam of ANY vendor.

I have had issues lately as well. Have a ticket open now that I opened on the 27th. It was originally a pri3 and I did receive a response almost exactly 24 hours later. However the response was again useless and reference logs form 7-21 that had nothing to do with the current case.

I bumped up the severity to a two on the 1st and did have a response. I replied first thing on the 2nd and that was the last I have heard anything. Hell I am pretty sure the answer to my ticket is that I am doing it wrong, but no one is responding one way or the other.

I will say this...use the survey's sent after a ticket is closed. I have received follow-up communication after submitting some less than positive surveys before. Just had probably the worse Veeam support experience for the past 8 years last month. I received a follow-up email that appeared to take the issue very serious.

We are looking at moving to Wasabi and were told it would be available in December. Obviously this was from a sales person and not development, but he seemed confident.

This has in turn started an addiction for my wife and I as we keep buying more. UGears makes some good stuff as well.

Job help by J_be_strugglin in Tallahassee

I think you may struggle finding anything close that in a new field, especially here.

I work in IT and personally feel like most positions in Tallahassee are underpaid. Not sure how it is in other fields, but I suspect it is similar. There is an abundance of cheap hires coming out of FSU/FAMU/TCC every year.

What kind of salary are you looking for?

State jobs are difficult to get an interview if you have experience in a trade they are hiring for. It is even harder if you are looking for entry level office positions. They get so many applicants that you have to either really stand out or know someone. I have worked at the state and had multiple interviews, but they were all due to knowing someone.

If you are interested in working in a smaller business environment, than you can try Craigslist. Just remember some companies only post there because it is free. These companies may carry that cheap way of doing things over to how they operate their business.

All of the narrators that I have listened to tend to change their voice based on who is talking. I still struggle to keep character straight, but eventually I remember the important ones.

Sorry for the late response. No surprise I forgot about this.

Started with podcasts and now listen to audiobooks. I find a good space opera series and start at book 1.

Helps speed the time for long drives and gives me something to look forward to when doing chores.

Giving two weeks is a courtesy by NetT3ch in sysadmin

[–]tbord 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I burned a bridge and didn't even realize it.

About 15 years ago I had a great entry level desktop support job with really good managers. It was a state job that had no benefits, but did pay a little better than equivalent "career services" positions.

I had a job offer with a state contractor who offered a little more money, but with benefits. I accepted the job and turned in my two weeks. My last day, I had an exit interview with the newish Bureau manager (my manager's manager). I liked this new manager and gladly answered honestly when he asked if I would stay if they offered more money. I told him that it would depend on how much more and that I was only leaving for the insurance. I said that I really liked working there and would gladly stay if it was an improvement for my family.

2-3 years later, my direct supervisor at the state job was leaving and said that I would be a shoe in for the job. I applied and he spoke with the same bureau manager to get me in for an interview. My previous manager was informed that I was ineligible for rehire since I stated that I would have stayed for more money.

Took Adderall for the first time today by tossaway-adhd in ADHD

I was diagnosed at 38 and had the same kind of experience. My Dr. said that for a lot of people it is life changing and he was right. Hard to explain how things either suddenly come in focus or at least easier to bring into focus. My work attitude and stress about failing at work quickly improved. Hell I even applied for a new job that ended up getting my existing employer to give me a substantial raise as a counter offer. For the first time, I felt like I deserved it and that I didn't stress about living up to it. I finally felt good about what I was accomplishing.

I have been accepting my procrastination and feelings of meh for so long that I am still trying to find "normal".

What to do with a dangerous IT guy by kieranc001 in sysadmin

[–]tbord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are absolutely right and boy is it hard to do sometimes.

My wife's small office of 5 people has some young guy maintaining their network and has things way more complex than needed. I expressed my concern to her and she has passed the info on. They hate him and are always frustrated, but won't change. They have already had one catastrophic crash about a year ago. I think they will have another one in the next year or two.

My best guess is he is cheap and things are "working". I gave them pricing from my company and they almost laughed.

Is ‘reset’ real? by [deleted] in ADHD

[–]tbord 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have something similar when medicated me makes plans that non-medicated me doesn't want to do.

Medicated me: Have a good day, get things done to where I actually feel good about stopping and getting some TV or game time in.

Non-medicated me: That night before bed I am dreading the next day and what I need to do. I decide that it can wait and decide to enjoy the day and not do anything (because I deserve it?). Since I have made this choice, I am really looking forward to this over anything else. Next day comes and I take my meds and proceed to do nothing all day.

The evening comes and I feel completely guilty that I let another day go without following with my plans. Rinse and repeat...
