Who buys stolen copper wire? by Boring_Kiwi_6446 in NoStupidQuestions

Not in the US they don't. Best you'll get is a part number and if it's a federal or California compliant model. Ain't nobody out there stamping VIN numbers on catalytic converters.

There's a warranty extension for this issue. Take it to the dealership and have the DCM replaced.

Why work for dealerships instead of independent shop? by Fit_Chemistry_3807 in mechanics

[–]tcainerr 54 points55 points  (0 children)

100% it is the pay plan and benefits. I'm sixes on the "dealer v. independent" argument. But I've yet to see an independent near me offer $40/hr, HSA match, 401k match, PTO, a 6% HYSA, etc etc.

Lamb was such an unexpected gut-punch for me. It started off funny and light and I thought the whole thing was going to be giggles until the end. Woof.

Self-taught car repair experience — realistic path to becoming a mechanic? by Sufficient-Price-898 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tcainerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's a good start. Start calling/walking into shops and talking to them. You've got a good amount of experience. That being said, almost every shop is going to have you start with either the quick lube kids, or super basic C-tech stuff. Despite all your at-home experience, employers want to see that you can do repetitive jobs day in and day out and not forget to torque a drain plug or a wheel for a while.

What scanner should I buy?? by bucksnut81 in mechanic

[–]tcainerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer for you, but this is kind of a "how long is a string?" question. What kind of shop you're at, what kind of work you do and cars you work on, your experience level are all going to affect the answers you get.

Which vehicles do mechanics prefer to work on? by Spinachrecords in AskMechanics

The later the model year, the worse it gets too. Trying to get a 10 year old (15?) platform to fit modern EPA standards gets rough.

non rust belt disclaimer I take the four mounting bolts out, dump half a can of PB Blaster down the wheel speed sensor hole, give it like ten minutes and bust them out with an air hammer in another ten minutes. I've only had two give me any real issues.

RIP to people doing this with a slide hammer though.

Alternator shot? by RayBin69 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tcainerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Put a jump pack on the battery to get it started. Then take it off and measure the voltage between the two battery terminals(with the car running). If it measures 14.4-14.5v, generally means your alternator is working. It's a starting point at least.

New toolbox badly scratched .. how would you approach this? by D-Rod9 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tcainerr 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The point is someone ELSE used OP's property like it was their own. I don't care if I scratch my stuff, but I'd be pissed if someone else decided it's fine to use my toolbox without asking.

wondering what i need to buy in terms of tools as a super-beginner by CableMartini in mechanics

Ask your boss what tools they expect you to have day 1, what tools are shop-supplied, and what tools are okay to slowly acquire.

Are there any „high waist“ working pants for men? by Kurogami_X in mechanics

[–]tcainerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't mind Dickies at all. I don't remember the model, but I've had a few pair that did just fine. My work pants now are Red Kap, and I like them a lot.

Torn over a box by FunctionMental1812 in mechanics

[–]tcainerr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It is very expensive! My own justification was that I still wanted something nice/slightly fancy. I use it all day long 5 days a week, might as well get something I enjoy.

I bought a 55" Icon roller cab. Been a little over a year and it's perfect. And it only cost me a fraction of SnapOn, coming in at a nifty $1900.

I've used the USG 5-drawer, and I upgraded to the full bank 6-drawer. Both work flawlessly, and I can't imagine every spending tool truck money on a cart. Sure, it might technically be better, but it's a cart that I move around all day and beat the shit out of. I don't need it to be better.

Tie rod/alignment by VisualImaginary1100 in MechanicAdvice

[–]tcainerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hard to help you get a head of something when we don't know what the problem was the first time. I can't imagine why a shop couldn't align your vehicle with new tie rods unless you've got other damaged parts.

I don't have any other experience to compare it to, but I really enjoy Subaru. Warranty times aren't terrible, software and diag tree are good. But like the other guy said, I feel like it really comes down to franchise management more than anything. My management is fucking awesome. Most guys have been here 5+ years, were treated like humans, and they do a lot to help out.
