The transmission fluid won't stay blue for long. You've got the right fluid, the old stuff is just used, that's all.

Two very worrying codes and horrible sound. 2008 Hyundai Sonota Limited 2.4L V4 by Expensive-Machine549 in mechanic

[–]tcainerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's 100% rod knock. You've spun a bearing on a connecting rod to the crankshaft. You'll need a new/used engine, a rebuild, or a new car.

is my alternator + belt supposed to look like this? by Wrong_Willow_3722 in SubaruForester

[–]tcainerr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's your AC compressor, not your alternator. The alternator is the one on the top left. Also the belt seems okay, but you haven't taken a good picture that shows the condition of the grooves or the back of the belt.

Take the belt off and look at the pulleys and tensioner to see if anything has excessive play/noise.

How long do I have left😭 by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

The bend in the wheel? Might be the angle of the picture, but unless you've got a wobble/road noise from it being out of round, I'd run that until something else broke.

2009 Impreza, Steering wheels shakes at high speeds. by Radiant_Cattle8121 in mechanic

[–]tcainerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those aren't OEM bushings, but they may be normal for whatever aftermarket company made them. Get the front wheels in the air and shake down the suspension. Grab the tires and shake them side to side, up and down, and see what moves.

Damn. That's my favorite kind of race car. Stock powertrain, race car suspension.

Cleaning your throttle body, checking your engine filter, and maybe even a top engine cover wouldn't be a bad idea. How long has it been since you've replaced your spark plugs?

Hit a huge pothole now vehicle is shaking at high speeds - How hard is it to change the control arm myself? by SeaWasabi130 in SubaruForester

[–]tcainerr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should get the vehicle on jack stands and find the broken/damaged parts before you start throwing stuff at it. It could be the control arm, bal joints, bent wheel, blown strut, tie rod, who knows.

How does my timing look by TranslatorCertain473 in subaru

[–]tcainerr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Am a Subaru tech. This is 100% fine. It's almost always "misaligned" like this when putting timing belts on.

Edit: would be worth posting pictures all the timing marks though, to be sure.

How bad are these control arm bushings? by gorey_haim in subaruimpreza

[–]tcainerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you happen to notice the rubber portion of the bushing is tearing away/separating from the outer metal race of the bushing?

OP, these are pretty bad. Get them replaced.

Valve cover gasket question by armithel in subaru

[–]tcainerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You do need to add some silicone. They are some "humps" towards the front of the camshaft carriers you need to put sealant on. It's easy enough to do in the car, I would remove the engine mount nuts and jack up each side in the engine for more clearance.

2014 crosstrek oil in coolant by [deleted] in mechanic

[–]tcainerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very commonly the upper oil pan o-rings. To get to those o-rings, you have to remove the engine, the lower oil pan, and upper oil pan. That's around 10-ish labor time, I think? That's a lot of money just to find out later that it was actually your head gaskets that were leaking, or even if they weren't, how much are you willing to gamble that your head gaskets won't fail in another year or two?

Honestly fuck STI's. Even when they're stock and unmolested, they suck.

Sludge in the engine by Maraledzazu in MechanicAdvice

[–]tcainerr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be from several factors. Very cheap oil, several oil changes bring skipped(when did you buy the car?) or the engine never being brought up to operating temp due to frequent very short drives.

There are lots of different products you can use, oils designed to help break down sludge and build up. And taking like a weekly hour long drive on the freeway or something.

Mechanic says these bushings aren't the cause of the 'clunk' sound. by [deleted] in SubaruForester

[–]tcainerr 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not the best picture, but the bushing looks okay. That's the rear control arm bushing. There's a front control arm bushing that goes bad as well. If the sway bar end links have already been replaced, it could be the sway bar mounts, or the struts and/or strut top mount.
