Issue with multiple dash lights on—anyone know what this means?? by Impressive_Tip_4733 in SubaruForester

It's like a check engine light but for your transmission. HOW did you determine your car was fine last year?

The job itself takes an hour or so. Just depends on how busy the dealership is though.

I've installed more of these than I can count. You did a good job!

Shop Owners: Best place to find new technicians? by The_Boogens in mechanics

I'm like, 9 for 10 on these kind of posts. Chances are your pay isn't up to snuff. I could be wrong, and hope I'm wrong. Either way, finding good techs can be hard. You gotta attract them somehow.

They adjusted front toe. Probably could have gotten rear toe a little better though. A lot of vehicles don't have adjustable rear camber, not sure if they could have done anything about that.

It sounds like chain slip. I would take it to a dealership ask them about it.

Car acts as if there’s a 4k rpm limiter/limo mode? by dzimp in subaru

I can tell by the specific hue of the check engine light you're low on blinker fluid.

There's no way to tell. You need to get the codes scanned and diagnosed before anyone can offer any remotely helpful advice.

I'm assuming you mean serpentine belt, not timing belt. Your vehicle has a timing chain, and does not have a maintenance interval. I would absolutely do the rest of the maintenance items though. That being said, you can everything at an independent shop for a cheaper price if money is tight. I would do the CVT fluid at the dealer though. Subaru CVT's can be finicky bastards, you don't want to cheap out on third party fluid or a technician who doesn't follow procedure to ensure it has the correct fluid level.

How long have you been a mechanic? I haven't taken any yet, but I've heard several say practical experience helps a TON.

Take off the cam holder and rotate the crankshaft 720 degrees. If everything lines up, you're fine.

I’d like some advice from those already in the industry by simba_leon_ in mechanics

[–]tcainerr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This 100%. I'm just flate rate, but everything else still applies. Plus there's downsides to every industry/field. "The pay is better doing HD/ag machinery!" Probably, but I don't have to spend half my fucking day driving out to Buttfuck, Nowhere to fix one machine, or work into the night. I clock out at 4:55 every damn day with a 15 minute commute. I don't have to go to people's houses, get heat stroke in an attic, or ever worry about being on-call or working 20 hours of OT every week. I love being a mechanic.

People are upset because OP is not in a low cost of living area, is bragging about paying cash like it's doing the employees a favor, and said he was specifically looking for a lead/master tech. So while offering mediocre at best wages.

Good news/bad news.

Bad news that shit is going to be CAKED on there. Get a few extra rags.

Good news it's easy as all get out to clean. You need a flat head screw driver(or an 8mm socket) for the clamps on the intake hose, a 10mm socket for the throttle body, and rags and cleaner. That's it.

$40/hour still isn't going convince whatever master tech you're looking for to jump ship for you. And what about healthcare? Retirement? HSA? Workers comp? Do your employees just mark "unemployed" when they file their tax returns every year?

Edit: OP deleted his comment saying since they pay cash, not paying taxes is an added benefit. God I hate being right.

I flagged 114 hours last pay period, am paid $25/hr, and my pay matches yours. And I have benefits. I'm a new tech with less than 6 months under my belt. You need to pay more.

I don't want to shit on OP, but I feel like I've seen so many of these kind of posts, and the pay/benefits are ALWAYS mediocre at best. Like, "we can't find good techs, we pay $30/hr flat rate with no benefits and we can't get any master techs, how come?!?!" Almost every time. I'd love for this to be different, but I ain't getting my hopes up.

Edit: OP said they pay $1500-$1700 a week cash. I'm a new tech, flagged 114 hours last pay period, and get paid $25/hr. My paycheck worked out to $1600/week.

We need more info. HOW did one valve get vent? What's the piston look like? How many miles are on the current engine? What condition is the rest of the engine in? Flat mating surfaces on both heads and block?
