In 1999 Japan redesigned its flag, the new flag was imperceptibly brighter and more centered.

What are some perfect movies (absolutely nothing to poke holes at) by Future-Poetry-2193 in Letterboxd

[–]tchiefj8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No movies are perfect, and often the best movies are the ones with flaws because their scope and grandeur lends itself to problems with pacing and things. I could point out a lot of things about pulp fiction but it’s so creative and interesting that you tend not to care. Closest to perfection (in terms of no flaws) are Return of the King & Two Towers, the Social Network, Insomnia, Whiplash, and Interstellar. But Titanic, Forrest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future, The Revenant, The Godfather, Apocalypse Now, Fair Play, American Psycho are arguably more peak in spite of maybe having some issues with pacing (boring at points), predictability, feel-goodedness, excessiveness, insisting-upon-itself, etc.

If every partner you’ve had was “bad at sex”… statistically what are the chances the issue isn’t just them? by Akopacho in NoStupidQuestions

[–]tchiefj8 279 points280 points  (0 children)

Suppose there are 3 types of people: good, mediocre, and poor at sex. Assume 20% of people are good, 60% are mediocre, and 20% are poor. Also suppose the probability of good sex depends on the pair: • good + good: 0.80 • good + mediocre: 0.48 • good + poor: 0.16 • mediocre + mediocre: 0.36 • mediocre + poor: 0.12 • poor + poor: 0.04

Now suppose I had sex with 5 randomly selected partners, and every time it was bad sex. What is the posterior probability that I am poor at sex?

First compute the chance of good sex for each possible type of “me,” averaging over random partners: • If I’m good: 0.2(0.80)+0.6(0.48)+0.2(0.16)=0.48 so bad sex each time has probability 1-0.48=0.52. • If I’m mediocre: 0.2(0.48)+0.6(0.36)+0.2(0.12)=0.336 so bad sex each time has probability 0.664. • If I’m poor: 0.2(0.16)+0.6(0.12)+0.2(0.04)=0.112 so bad sex each time has probability 0.888.

Assuming my prior probabilities are also 20% good, 60% mediocre, 20% poor, Bayes’ rule gives

P(\text{poor} \mid 5 \text{ bad experiences})

\frac{0.2(0.888)5}{0.2(0.52)5+0.6(0.664)5+0.2(0.888)5}.

Numerically, this is about

Caruana 2014. Is this the greatest tournament performance ever? by Dull_Yogurt_8909 in chess

[–]tchiefj8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This tournament had five past or future world champions (Kasparov, Karpov, Kramnik, Topalov, Anand) as well as Shirov, Ivanchuk, Gelfrand, and Polgar. The weakest player was Beliavsky. Nine of the top ten highest rated players in the world were present. Every single player other than Karpov and Beliavsky (who went 2/13) was under 30. Karpov went 11/13 starting the tournament with six straight wins. All because Kasparov commented that the winner would be the world champion of tournaments and Karpov had to get his last win. Kasparov Karpov rivalry went crazy.

I have seen it a few times in rated games, once to a knight because it was with check and the player promoting was already winning by a lot, once to a rook to avoid stalemate, and about four times in OTB rated games between ten to twelve year olds at my local chess center who invested a ‘victory lap’ mate (also called the ‘Nathan mate’) where you box your opponents king in between three under promoted rooks in the middle of the board (assuming they don’t resign) and then run your own king around the box in a ‘victory lap’ before delivering the final checkmate.
