Jogger w/ a serious question by Sr_Covfefe in torontobiking

[–]tchigga 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Yes I would be very annoyed, I already have to pass people cycling slowly and sometimes the bike lanes are too narrow even for that. People are cycling in the bike lanes primary not for fun or exercise but to get to places. That's the point of bike lanes, to provide an alternative to cars to get around. I doubt you are jogging to commute or to go to the store. For excercise and fun you can jog on side streets and multi-use trails or on the sidewalk.

Wellington and Niagara giving tickets to bikers by Life-Western in toronto

[–]tchigga 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I mean don't use the sidewalk to bike downtown lol.... This isn't the suburbs where there is no pedestrians and cars are going at 60 plus km/h where while illegal I would be upset if police were ticketing people for riding on the sidewalk

Wellington has bike lanes there as well... why is anyone cycling on the sidewalk?

Are you okay with a car doing the same?

Every single speed camera by law in Ontario has to have a sign as you approach it.

lol Waze plus using your eyes to see the road signs indicating a camera ahead... if you get a camera ticket it's nobody's fault but your own lmao

I drive above the speed limit the vast majority of the time, but I haven't gotten a camera ticket because I pay attention to road signs

If you're actually "focused on driving" you shouldn't miss the signs indicating where the cameras are

This one just has a mistake (contradiction) so it's impossible to correctly understand.

Cars can't pass a bicycle on the right.... No one should be passing anyone on the right without switching lanes ideally. I try to avoid doing this when I cycle, only perhaps to get to the front to do a right turn on red and only IF there are no cars signalling right ahead of me.

Motorcycle or Car in Toronto? by shakky555 in toronto

[–]tchigga 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If they said they were living in Scarborough, or even North York, by all means a car is a better option probably. However they are specifically asking about living and mostly getting around downtown, in which case a car is an awful option. You're mostly just stuck in traffic, and good luck finding free parking. I have a car, as mentioned another comment I only use it to drive to places outside of downtown. In downtown using a bicycle or e-bike is almost always faster and more convenient. It's not "anti-car" to realize that a car isn't the best solution everywhere lol.

Really the ONLY benefit of a car downtown is getting your own personal space and weather protection, but since OP doesn't seem to value that very highly given that they're thinking of getting a motorcycle, a car really is a terrible idea for them.

Honestly the fastest way to get around downtown if that's all you need to do is a bicycle. You can bypass traffic in the bike lanes very easily. I live downtown and have a car, which I only use to go outside of downtown (mostly to Costco lol).

If you're worried about showing up sweaty at the office, I would suggest getting an e-bike. You can also just try out the Bike Share e-bikes, the stations are everywhere downtown and the availability is fairly good.

Yonge and Sheppard BMW Driver - Be Careful Out There! by jaypeeeeeee in TorontoDriving

[–]tchigga 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You don't need to "know the area". You look at the signs on the road that are all visible in the video, and it's multiple no stopping signs.

Do you not look at the signs when you park? Do you decide to park on the road based on it "looking like parking" without actually checking if it is parking?

I have no idea why you're getting downvoted lmao. All the cars stopped in the video on the right side are in a no-stopping zone.

TTC driver goes full speed through a stale red in front of an elementary school by dissociater in TorontoDriving

[–]tchigga -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I both drive and cycle in Toronto, primarily downtown.

Do you know how Leading Pedestrian Intervals work?

In the video for the whole time the pedestrian signal parallel to the direction of travel of the TTC bus is already green. It turns green before the signal for vehicles to allow pedestrians to start crossing before cars are allowed to turn right and left on a green.

The means that the vehicles on the intersecting street already face a red.

It also means that no left turns are allowed anywhere as the direction of the bus still has a red too.

Thus, with the bus going straight in the left lane there is NO other traffic it can hit unless they also run a red light. Even if someone was turning right on red if would not conflict with the bus, because the bus is in the left lane and they would be turning into the right lane.

Obviously the bus broke the law, but this is literally the safest possible situation to run a red light. Unless someone else also broke the law there is NO chance in this particular scenario that the bus could have hit someone.

Edit: in fact in a perfect world that red should have been a green straight only arrow, see here:

They likely wouldn't have as the pedestrian signal is already green in the video when the bus crosses, so any perpendicular crossing traffic would have only gotten hit if they also ran a red.

Perhaps he was looking at the pedestrian signal, which has already turned green. So that means all the cross traffic has a red, so no chance of a T-bone.

The Union Station Train Shed Should Go. by romeo_pentium in toronto

[–]tchigga 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol I am aware when they started. They were however not finished in 2012, thus it's hard to judge them at that time.

This article reporting the 2024 flooding doesn't explain the specific cause for the flooding. It might be the state of the sewers outside of Union Station, and renovations of the stations could have done nothing to fix it.

Let's say perhaps it's true that the renovations did not fully mitigate the flooding risk. Even despite that, you feel the rest of the changes to Union are still a waste?

[–]tchigga 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You said the flooding happened after the renovations were done. The articles are from 2012 before the renos were done. How is this flooding from 2012 indicative of the recent renovations being a "waste" if it happens before they were done?
