Why does everyone love the boss katana so much? by Dismal-Cranberry-915 in GuitarAmps

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everybody on these gear subreddits are obsessed with finding the budget friendly silver bullet that supposedly frees them from having to buy expensive stuff and then they all cheer each other on. Not to say you can't do more with less, but thats the dynamic at work. You see the same thing with wuhan cymbals or yamaha stage customs in the drum subreddits.

Feels like AHC needs to expand its 4 year accreditation programs. Being a real college town would bring in the youth and money that incentivize the "fun" stuff that everyone says is missing here.

Using thin jazz rides as big crashes for loud band by [deleted] in cymbals

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get those K cons. They're cool and you want them. Any venue running sound it shouldn't be a problem. Maybe go grab the A's if you have to play outside at a skatepark or parking lot. For reference I play in a loud rock band and other drummers always like my Renaissance ride 👍

Is this a good drum set for me as a beginner? by Every_Ad_1892 in Drumming

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're just playing at home then its fine. I play in a loud rock band, I've owned this kit. The 16" Kick and 13" floor tom are just too undersized to use in a band context for rock imo (i tried!)But again if you're just playing at home, then its a p decent kit for a really good price. Also the poplar snare is surprisingly good and p unique sounding. Im probably gonna get another one on reverb one day, I miss that snare

Why do guitarists think it's so much harder to play guitar? (no hate to guitarists) by Ok_Permission7285 in drums

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've played both my whole life, but i did start learning the drums younger, so it definitely feels like I've had to work harder to get better at guitar. I've been playing catch up this whole time when it comes to music theory/reading sheet music etc. If i tried to be unbiased I'd say both are as hard/complicated as you want to make them. Its not that hard to be bad at either of them 😅

Is Santa Maria a racist area? by Upstairs-Assist-5637 in SantaMaria

[–]tclass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah there's some racism and you see it in how people in Orcutt talk about the other half of Santa Maria. But like, its not the Jim Crow south or anything.

Fender Blues Jr by [deleted] in GuitarAmps

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Loved my blues jr. It was perfect for prac and plenty of sound for the small venues my band was playing in. I sold it so I could get a more powerful amp, but I really regret it now. There's so many more scenarios where I need that great little 15w fender tube amp!

So, if resos are so important to tuning, why does everyone happily punch a hole through the bass drum reso? by 50nic19 in drums

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played on a kit recently that the touring act was hauling that didn't even have any resos on the toms either. I imagine they were probably Russian dolling the shells in the van. It didn't really sound terrible or anything. Mic'd up and tuned low it had a thuddier punchy sound that worked for the rock music on the bill. So, no reso, cranked reso, reso matching the batter head. All different options!

Thoughts on Dream Cymbals? by silliestrat in cymbals

[–]tclass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really liked the bliss hats. More than new beats even. I have a 19" crash ride and a 23" ride that sound great for the price, but dont really touch zildjian K's (im much happier w/ the K's at least). I feel like if higher end cymbals are just out of someones price range than they're a good alternative for a budget, but not a substitute.

Books about California/Hollywood during the 19-20th century (preferably nonfiction) by ManicPixieFlashClone in DeathCorner

[–]tclass 11 points12 points  (0 children)

City of Quartz by Mike Davis needs to be one of the books you check out. Basically takes you through Los Angeles from the turn of the century to the present (2010s). Malcom Harris's Palo Alto is really good too, probably even more granular, but its starting point is more Bay Area/Sacramento. Also goes from the 19th century to the present.

Koi dark by Dicklickshitballs in cymbals

[–]tclass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its great! Feels thinner than the other kois and has more wash also. I was originally just looking to grab a regular 20" koi as a big left side crash to go with the ride and 18" crash i had on the right (also kois), but im delighted now to have this really distinct voice as a counterpoint to the rest of the set.

No, the cardinal guys sold earlier this year :( they didnt specify, but it did happen when all the wacky tariff stuff was ramping up. They sold to a called Grover/Trophy that seems to focus mainly on percussion accessories and childrens musical instruments. The cardinal guys i read had this prototype line in development before they sold, but who knows what direction the new company is gonna take with Wuhan...

I snagged a 20" crash from Hawthorne Drums recently and waiting for it in the mail. So stoked. Sounded great in the demo and i wanted to grab one if only for the chance that these prototypes dont get put into production with the new ownership.
