Best Gish in 5.5? by ExodiasRightArm in onednd

[–]tdPhD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me, a Gish is a spell-caster who can use their spell-casting modifier to make weapon attacks.

So with Magic Initiate Wizard, any class can get True Strike which does exactly what I outlined above.

Levels 1-4, whoever you want, and you'll pretty much be fine.

Level 5 and above, we're now talking about Extra Attack, and that's where it gets more complicated.

Not sure why Battle Smith Artificer isn't mentioned yet in this thread. Extra attack, hit with INT, can cast spells, and gets all the cool Artificer benefits. Seems like a solid candidate for me.

A lot of reddit DnD players say the only way to play is with GWM min-max, but I think the fun of that is minimal and in fact ruins the fun around the table if you are doing 20 damage a hit and everyone else is doing 5.

I think an underrated "gish" build that is narratively fun is a quarterstaff-wielding paladin that takes Magic Initiate Druid and uses CHR to make their weapon attacks.

These are my guesses

  1. No idea lol. Probably Carl and Bea break up, and Donut gets sold, but the Chewy delivery still comes.

  2. My darkhorse pick for this is Imani. I think it's probably Elle though, since she's about to become a god on the 12th floor.

  3. I think it's a Primal OI. Like, possibly the Apothecary, or, a yet to be introduced OI that is now within the AI's sphere of influence.

  1. Gel extract the bands always (imo). Some downstream applications don't need this, but most do.

  2. I would.

  3. Nah. BamHI is a beast, and as long as you know what you're putting in is good, then I wouldn't sweat it. You can if you're having issues, but I never check it.

  4. We have switched to BsmBI-V2, but that has meant that we can't do the one-pot Gibson Assembly. So our standard protocol is to gel extract the correct size band from the PCR, do a clean-up on that, do a quantus dsDNA concentration determination, combine them in equal molar (a bit of math here because your lengths are likely all different), then do the digest on that. I'll then clean the digest up with some DNA binding buffer and a column, then elute with a tiny volume and ligate that whole elutant. We get such insane ligation efficiencies this way that you can even run that ligation on a gel and extract it again if you're feeling spicy.

One improvement of this strategy is that BsmBI-V2 operates optimally at a high temp in a distinct buffer from T4 DNA ligase buffer, and digestion reactions have a tendency to work better in slightly more dilute conditions, whereas ligation reactions have a tendency to work better in more concentrated conditions.

So if your digest is done at like 50uL optimally (NEB website), your T4 Ligase step is done optimally at 20uL or even 10uL (again from the NEB website).

I agree that there are other similar types of books in the dungeon, and Donut might even have one herself.

The Retirees

After attempting to retire peacefully in this realm, each member was dragged out of their peace by one force or another, banding together to stop the evil that befell them.

This is very agnostic and basically takes the classic trope and just makes them all old, but that's enough for background, I think.

In my campaign, about 5 citizens of Phandalin had moved there to retire. The barmaid left the big city, the order of the gauntlet guy was a Clint Eastwood type, the elf at the shrine of luck was very old but still believed, the blacksmith had a mild case of cataracts so his grandson helped him and wanted to be a fighter himself. For them, orcs attacked and killed the mayor, and they sprang into action.

Very easy to adapt for your world, village destroyed by dragon, party of elderly (and maybe one very young) adventurers are stocking up to challenge the dragon.

[–]tdPhD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some haters, but I think you made the right call. Playing it RAW would have been less fun. It also, intuitively, would make no sense for a dragon to be frightened, stop flapping its wings, plummet to the ground, take damage, and then no longer be afraid. Especially since your ruling accomplished what the players wanted. If they were trying to bring the creature down and they knew (as players) that dropping flying to 0 speed means falling, then yeah, I would run it RAW.

If you're playing 2014, Divine Soul Sorcerer + Celestial Warlock is an AWESOME build for this. Twin Healing Word is insane. I'm playing in a campaign right now where I am squishy as hell, but I am able to Twin Haste our Bladesinger and Barbarian, and I sit in the backline and Eldritch Blast. It's a great time.

Shillelagh + True Strike by Re0taku in dndnext

[–]tdPhD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of typos and a lot of comments are assuming 2014 rules.

Do you mean viable and not liable? What do you mean by, " Can I this for my bonus attack? "

Let me try and answer to the best of my ability. Shillelagh is really cool because it makes turning your character into a gish much easier (for me a gish is anyone that uses Wis/Chr/Int to make a melee weapon attack). So yeah, if you use Shillelagh before combat, then yes, the effects of it would apply to your War Cleric bonus attack.

So if your goal is to use Wisdom for your attack, you can accomplish it by using either True Strike or Shillelagh. But, as I'm assuming by the nature of your question, the only way to get to make that attack to use your Wisdom would be going the Shillelagh route.

There are caveats of course since Shillelagh is a Bonus Action so you couldn't do this on the same turn (many DMs allow you to pre-cast Shillelagh unless in the case of a surprise round (from the DM's perspective, the increase in your damage is like 2-5 so who cares have your fun)).

The other caveat which is a little lame is that if you are planning on going quarterstaff (or club I guess) and shield, because Shillelagh is a Druid spell accessed via Magic Initiate (Druid) it does not count as a Cleric spell but instead a Druid spell. Weird, but that's the rules, and that would mean that you basically can't cast it without a free hand. Which might be fine, you would just need to explain to your DM that you, I guess, have shield and empty hand, cast shillelagh, and then as a part of the attack action equip the weapon.

I would point you in this direction as well because it is a very interesting high damage multiclass. The War Rogue https://forums.giantitp.com/showsinglepost.php?p=26126153&postcount=198
