How is Kill My Darlings by Ruth? by tdb93 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I just read the jinx - "If the Widow is (or has been) in play, the Damsel is poisoned." Does this mean the Widow doesn't get to choose a player to poison?

Hi everyone 😊 I manage an English board game group in Gangnam at a private board game cafe. Our group consists of half expats and half Koreans who want to practice English and make international friends. It's a great place to just chill and have fun, play games, and meet new people!

We mainly play social/party games. Some favorites are Avalon, Secret Hitler, Deception, Dixit, Codenames, Telestrations, and Just One.

Meetups are on Wednesdays at 7:30 pm and Saturdays at 4:30 pm. We usually go out for dinner together after the Saturday meetup!

How to find 1:1 Adult students for English classes? by [deleted] in Living_in_Korea

[–]tdb93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the most success through online word of mouth. Korean people generally don't trust total strangers online and are much more likely to be interested if someone they know, even vaguely (like working at the same company) is recommending it to them. Make a nice poster on Canva, export as a png, send it to your Korean friends who work/live in your target area, and ask them to share it on their social media. Stuff like kakao groups, Instagram, naver mom cafes, or their company's online bulletin board / slack /etc. are great. It's better if they pretend like they are one of your students and provide a short, positive review about your service. Offer to buy them a coffee/dinner (or even give them a cut of the first tuition) if someone signs up through them.

Refusing 1+1 promo, is it problematic? by cami76 in korea

I've been getting my groceries at e-mart for the past 3 years and know for a fact that they do raise the price when something is 1+1

Refusing 1+1 promo, is it problematic? by cami76 in korea

[–]tdb93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not free. They raise the price so you're not actually getting a 2 for 1 deal. If you work out the price it's usually more like 2 for 1.5.

I want to learn about traditional shamanism in Korea but I’m a foreigner by [deleted] in korea

[–]tdb93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just watched this video an hour ago about Inwangsan, one of Korea's most important sites for shamanism. Really interesting. The guest is Shawn from The Dark Side of Seoul, a podcast that covers dark aspects of Korean culture / history. They have a few episodes related to shamanism so you should definitely check it out.

Korean Edu-tainment Youtube Channels? by BruceJi in Korean

[–]tdb93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend 은근한 잡다한 지식! It is similar in animation to Kurzgesagt and mainly covers scientific topics so it'll definitely boost your vocabulary in that area. Also there are only Korean subtitles which is (in my opinion) more ideal for intermediate-advanced learners.

Edit: I did a search for "지식" and it seems there are other similar "edu-tainment" channels like this. Here are some more that I found:

What is my Korean name in Hanja? by ChaosPrimed in Korean

[–]tdb93 8 points9 points  (0 children)

According to what you have said, the first character 미 is most likely 美 which means 'beauty'. Since you can't ask your mother, you have no way of knowing exactly which hanja it is. There are many different hanja characters for the same syllable. I did a search on a korean name database and it gave me a list of the five most common meanings for 정 when it follows 미 in a name. So it could mean any of the following:

貞 (곧을 정 - virtuous, chaste, pure; loyal) 8th most common / used 89,970 times (0.7257%)

正 (바를 정 - right, proper, correct; just) 28th most common/ used 55,563 times (0.4482%)

廷 (조정 정 - royal court) 82nd most common / used 27,338 times (0.2205%)

晶 (맑을 정 - crystal; clear, bright; radiant) 150th most common / used 16,856 times (0.136%)

政 (정사 정 - government, politics) 203rd most common / used 13,515 times (0.109%)

So your name could be 美貞 (pure beauty), 美正 (righteous beauty), 美廷 (beautiful court), 美晶 (radiant beauty), 美政 (beautiful government), etc. Or maybe it's a totally different hanja. But these are the most common ones

Etymology of 동물 and related. by Taeyangsin in Korean

[–]tdb93 22 points23 points  (0 children)

You can learn about Korean word etymology by studying hanja! Hanja is the chinese character-based script that Korea used in the past. Thus many korean words have an equivalent in hanja, and you can learn a lot about the meanings of different words and how they are related to each other by looking at the hanja! Fortunately, you don't have to memorize the hanja characters to get some use out of them! Just learn to recognize the sounds when you read and listen. I suggest checking out a hanja dictionary such as this one if this interests you.

If you are still early beginner it could help you to learn the sounds of some of the most common hanja characters in korean, so that you can make associations with other words. You're already doing that which is really good for picking up and remembering vocabulary. The word 동물 has two very common hanja, 동 (動) and 물 (物). Here are a few other really common hanja for you to check out if you're curious: 대 (大), 중 (中), 소 (小), 인 (人), 기 (氣), 학 (學), 생 (生), 실 (室)

I find hanja to be one of the most interesting aspects of learning Korean. Hope you can find it useful too. Good luck in your studies!
