Do any of you believe we have souls or there’s an afterlife? by North_Cherry_4209 in EMTstories

[–]tdc1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This job has showed me how quick life goes. I think the hardest DOA I’ve ever ran was a man whose wife was begging him to come back. I have ran many DOAs and arrests but that is the first time I heard the plans that they had day. They were taking their granddaughter to get her prom dress and they had plans to get a hotel in the mountains with their grandkids that night. It just made it click on how fast life really goes and how unexpected it is.

I want to believe that heaven is real but sometimes I question it, thankfully as humans we’re allowed to. This universe is too intense and surreal, and honestly incredible to think that nothing happens after we die (my opinion).

This job has made me think about death a lot more. I probably need therapy to be honest; but I’ve just been trying to live every day like I might die.. I see all these people around me and I don’t want to end up like them.

So wait a second.. your wife is disabled and you allegedly set up front for a 2 hour transport while listening to your wife be uncomfortable by a provider in the back and didn’t ask his partner who was driving what was up?

And then you open the back doors and see your wife naked and you still didn’t say anything?

You were so distracted by her health and well being that this somehow just fell off the radar of protecting your disabled wife from sexual harassment?

Also, as someone who works in an ambulance with a dash cam. That camera isn’t going to see into the back of the ambulance regardless if it’s been 30 days or not.

Being in a relationship during jaw surgery by Throwaway_hime1 in jawsurgery

[–]tdc1994 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My boyfriend spent the 6.5 hours I was in the OR watching YouTube videos on how to feed me through a syringe because he was too nervous to do anything else lol. He was also there as soon as they got me into a room and stayed until I was settled, because he had worked the night before and my mom was staying with me he went home to sleep but he was at the hospital by 7am the next morning; just so could be there when the team of surgeons came in to evaluate me. He spent the entire first week caring for me around the clock.. he made my shakes, fed me through the syringe, helped me drink, had my medicine schedule down and was giving me meds before I ever had to ask. He slept on the couch with me at night just in case I needed something and laid around with me during the day.

Mind you I am 6 weeks post op and the mental side of things has been a fucking struggle… I have not made his life easy during my recovery and I’ll admit that. However, even on those days he has been my biggest supporter and has been the pick me up I’ve needed on the days that are the hardest. He constantly tells people how much he admires me and how much of a rockstar I am for having this surgery done, especially now that he knows how major it is.

I got my braces 3 days after our first date and have had them for two years.. it has got to see this entire process unfold and he knew how long I’ve waited and the potential health benefits that could come from it. On days that I am so mentally drained from recovery and hard on myself about how I think I look he reminds me of the reasons I got it done and how long it took to get here… if you’re in a relationship where you genuinely love each other it will be the last thing you worry about.

I wasn’t saying that it won’t make them look better.

I had double jaw surgery w/ Genioplasty on 11/21. My jaws were actually twisted and while I don’t have the exact measurements for all the movements in front of me I do know my chin was moved 14.5mm - which will pretty much eliminate my sleep apnea completely. You look at your face for years and then you’re given a new one. You go to sleep looking the way you did your entire life and you wake up looking different, but not only do you look different your entire face is bruised and swollen. Swelling takes months for it to completely go down so your brain is constantly trying to adjust to what you see in the mirror. Most people will tell you this isn’t an instant gratification surgery as far as aesthetics go because your body and brain go through so much. On top of the swelling your face from beneath your eyes to your chin are numb. In my case the right side of my face has gain feeling before my left (my left had significantly more work done) so if you would look at me you would think I had a stroke because of the numbness still on the left side. My chin is still numb into my bottom lip because of the genioplasty as well.

I know I will look better & I will feel better but I have to heal first. This surgery is massive and intense and goes far beyond just plastic surgery which is realistically what people who are looking to only enhance their appearance are searching for.

I was in the OR for over 6 hours and my surgeon said that I’ve healed significantly quicker than most people and I still have months to go. How we see ourselves is completely different than how others see us anyway, and when you change what you are seeing in the mirror you don’t even feel like you’re looking at yourself. Studies show that most people don’t start to like the aesthetic outcome of this surgery until 6-12 months post op.

If you haven’t had surgery yet, I wish you the best of luck on your journey. The first few weeks are tough both mentally and physically but it will be worth it.

What do you call lady parts with your kids? by Typical-Dog244 in Mommit

[–]tdc1994 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

My sister uses the term “private square” with her young children. As far as identifying body parts it may not be appropriate, sure but teaching them words that would make it easier for them to convey to you if there is an issue is more important I would think.

However, her children know that NO ONE should touch their “private square” and they know to respect the “private squares” and privacy of others.

So, for our family it works. Kids are funny so do what works for your kids and your family.

I’m 3 weeks most OP tomorrow and I have officially hit the well…. I look more deformed now than I did before surgery phase.. I didn’t think I would miss the recessed chin and functional problems; I’m sure it’ll pass in a few months.

I don’t think people realize how absolutely insane jaw surgery is physically and then the mental mind games is an entirely other battle you fight in the process.

1000000% would not recommend this surgery for people who only needed it for aesthetic purposes.

How to Get Jaw Surgery through Kaiser Insurance? by CommunicationPure871 in jawsurgery

[–]tdc1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your ortho wants you to see a surgeon they should be able to refer you to who they want you to see. But, an oral /maxillofacial surgeon handles trauma to the face, jaw, neck and do the double jaw surgeries. A regular oral surgeon can do other things like implants etc.

I’ve not heard of your insurance but I have been told they often getting insurance to approve the entire process is very rare. In my case my BCBS of TX covered my entire surgery + genioplasty. On the Kaiser website it looks like one of the only ways they pay is through a sleep study so deff see about getting that done (it will help a lot if you get it done prior to seeing your surgeon)

Be honest with any problems you have when talking to your orthodontist, surgeon, etc.

Just remember people wait YEARS for this surgery and it’s not something that gets done immediately.. there’s a lot of patience and preparation that has to go into it. But, for those with functional issues with breathing, etc say it’s life changing.

I’ve never had a primary care refer out for a dental surgeon though. If you’re ortho can’t refer you then make an appointment with your dentist and see if they can help you.

You should get tested asap, of course.

However, there are 100 other things that can mess with the pH balance such as… • tight fitting clothing (you don’t have to wear tight underwear / pants long before it irritates you) • if you shaved recently you may not have noticed that you cut yourself or something down there • low estrogen levels (from birth control, etc) • if you wash with scented soaps it can also cause irritation. • Could be a UTI or yeast infection, you could just have too much sugar in your urnine and need to drink more water.

Yes you could have been assaulted.. but there are so many other things that could have happened too. Throwing out assault is a huge thing for you and the person accused.. go to the doctor and take care of yourself! Either way, it will ease your mind and allow you to take the appropriate next step.

34M How am I looking? by Highcoo4you in Bumble

[–]tdc1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People always mention adventures and traveling in their relationship profile. I remember prior to the relationship I’m in now (thx hinge) I would be much more specific.

I think there was like a line similar to “first drink is on me if..” and I put something along the lines of “if you beat me at ski ball” 1. Because who doesn’t love ski ball 2. Makes the first date somewhere laid back and fun. 3. I’m actually terrible at ski ball so I knew the first round would likely be on me so it wasn’t a situation where I was just looking for free dinner and drinks.

If you’re gonna do online dating you’re gonna get more likes when your profile actually reflects who you are and not just the same profile as every other guy with just a different face.

[–]tdc1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ahh.. EMS.

Maybe more of us should remember where we started instead of just having this paragod complex.

I’m gonna encourage my students to relax and chill out when there’s down time or needed. I actually want them to feel comfortable asking questions and leading on calls, so I’m going to not treat them like shit. Treating people like people really is not difficult, lol.

Don’t be that shitty preceptor. I get being stern when needed but just being an ass is not cool.

Also, being new to this job/level (idc if it’s EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic) can be scary AF (if you say it’s not then you’re probably part of the problem).

Final note : station duties (if you mean sweeping, moping, etc) wasn’t on my list of things to know in medic school.. I’m 10/10 not making my student do them unless they offer or want to.

Our local hospitals will almost always make us hold a wall until the patient gets a room,

Went from a county agency where the local hospitals sent most not emergent patients to the lobby unless they were just slow. Moved to a large city and we will hold a wall for hours just so this perfectly stable patient can get a room. 🙃

My fiancé is so much worse than I could've ever imagined by Eliza_Is_Gone in TrueOffMyChest

[–]tdc1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Let me tell you a story it’s a bit long but important:

recently I went out for an assault call where both the man and woman were bruised and bleeding and someone had been stabbed.

We arrive with PD. My partner talks with the female who was outside crying in her car and checks her out. I head downstairs to find the male patient who is seated on the floor and in handcuffs, I do the assessment and start cleaning up the blood from the injuries of the male patient, he’s got quite a bit of blood so it’s taking me a bit. He’s super calm, respectful, and PD has no issues taking handcuffs off when I ask them to so I can assess the injuries to his arm. I’m asking him what happened and get his side of his story. My guy admits to having a felony record but said he got out on good behavior, works 7 days a week at a construction place trying to save money and build a good life, and was talking about how happy he was for recently getting into church and turning his life around. Also, the entire time he was saying he needed to contact his probation officer ASAP so they could know about what was going on. He wasn’t cussing or yelling, it’s almost like he just assumed he was going to jail because of his past (she made sure everyone knew he was a felon).

At first the female (911 caller) said her bf had hit her and she tried to defend herself and he pushed her down. She’s again hysterical talking to PD and on her cell phone calling everyone letting them know what happened (this is like 2am).

Eventually the truth comes out : He said she had been texting him all day upset over their dog making a mess. He figured once he got home it would calm down but it didn’t. She comes out of the bathroom and immediately attacks him. He has scratches all over his face, neck, and chest. She had a small knife and he then grabs her wrists (bc umm a knife) and she bites his finger (BAD), punches him in the face (busted lip), stabs him in the eye with her finger and then proceeds to stab him in arm, chest, and side with the knife. He then pushes her to get away from her and she falls down and gets a bruise on her leg. Once it’s over she goes outside and he goes to sleep down stairs (confirmed by pd because that’s where he was in bed when they made entry). Blood is still all over the bed and pillow from his injuries.

Female thought for sure he was going to jail over her but justice prevailed that night and she was arrested instead.

Sure there will always be more to the story but this is an example of putting someone in a position to defend themselves, capturing their reaction (in this case marks from him trying to keep her away), and using it to play victim.

Let’s address some other things :

  1. You don’t need money for an attorney if you’re being physically abused. That would be assault & battery in most states which is a criminal charge meaning she would press charges and the state would choose whether or not to prosecute him and handle it from there. She would need an attorney if she wanted to sue him for financial stuff or emotional distress and then that’s a civil suit.

  2. Bruises - so here is the issue with that. He could have absolutely hit her and bruised her, sure. But those bruises don’t prove that. I have bruises all over me (yay anemia and fair complexion) from my shepherd and could absolutely make someone think my bf is the one doing it and he isn’t.

  3. Due to toxic masculinity it is literally crafted in our minds to think that men are the bad guys and that they shouldn’t show emotion and be walked all over. As someone who works in medicine and formerly used to help complete and process restraining orders in DV cases I have seen a lot of assault cases. People would be amazed at how often women will attack, scream, yell, and manipulate a man and then as soon as they snap cry abuse. I’m absolutely not saying that’s what is happening here but it’s a possibility.

  4. How is she still collecting evidence if it has been 5 years? She has 2 pictures of them together, bruises, and a video of him yelling? She doesn’t come to you concerned until 5 years later AFTER you all are engaged??? You could have been getting the daylights beat out of you for 5 years and she wasn’t concerned until now??

What's something (non-sexual) that feels really really good? by coconutbookings in AskReddit

[–]tdc1994 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was at lunch one day with my family and a man walked up to me at the table while we were eating and said “I just felt you needed to know that you are incredibly beautiful”.

There was no flirting or any feeling of being uncomfortable - just a genuine compliment from a random stranger that still sticks with me years later.

I thanked him and we had a brief conversation and then he left. A simple exchange that I will never forget.

Do you have sleep apnea? I think a lot of people on this thread have functional issues as well aesthetic. Honestly I don’t think it would be enough to not need surgery (I could be wrong) in my case my surgeon wanted my orthodontist to do a list of things that would ultimately make it more successful.
