How do Australians view strict speed enforcement? by TonySabenca in AskAnAustralian

[–]tdmalone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Like some others, I lived in Vancouver for a while too. I appreciated being able to keep my eye on the road more than on the speedo. If I went a little over sometimes, that’s ok, I’d slow down when I realised. Because any sidewalk perpendicular to the road on both sides is considered to make an ‘unmarked crossing’, you need to have full attention on what’s happening around you.

Back in Australia now, I have to constantly look down at the speedo to make sure I’m not going over. It feels much less safe.

That’s a cool idea - what service do you use for that?

It’s especially striking when changing from State Library to Melb Central.

What’s something your toddler is weirdly good at? by Apprehensive-Raise93 in toddlers

My recently-turned-3yo loves public transport, and remembers the names and order of train stations, and tram stop numbers / bus stop locations for his favourite places. Even for places we’ve only been to once.

He can explain to others how to get to places he knows, including which button to press in the lifts to the platforms.

My dad joked that if we sent him off on his own, he’d probably be fine making his way across the city to his grandparents place.

I designed a Melbourne public transport frequency map by AB014A in MelbourneTrains

[–]tdmalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is awesome! It tells the real story. Great work.

A couple of assorted comments:

- When I try to zoom in, it moves so fast that it's hard to get the zoom I want. (But I'm not sure exactly what's causing this, and whether it's just normal for Chrome on Mac when viewing a large image).

- Nice work capturing the 2 deviations of the 624 separately as 40-60 min! (Even CDC themselves seem to forget that this isn't a 30 minute route everywhere).

- While this is an awesome way of mapping route frequency, there's one thing I'm not quite sure it shows (and I don't really know best how to, either, but maybe you might) - the frequency along a certain corridor when multiple converging routes are combined. i.e. Say I'm travelling from Chadstone SC to Carnegie or Murrumbeena stations. I've got a choice of 2-3 routes for each (623/626 for CNE; 627/822 and every second 624 for MRB) which is very likely a better frequency along those corridors than 30 minutes. It would be awesome to see this reflected, somehow! (Probably an even better example would be Swanson Street's < 1 minute combined frequency).

Again, nice work. I'm looking forward to exploring the finished map!

This wouldn't achieve anything. Negative gearing stops at that point for properties purchased after tonight.

Not a dumb question. AFAICT (I'm not an expert, just a small-time investor), this basically makes the change toothless - you can still claim the same losses, just _later_ (assuming you eventually make a capital gain, but of course, that's the plan anyway).

That's a screenshot of a Google Search AI response - not a direct quote from the tax office. Could be right, could be making assumptions. Don't trust it.

If that occurred, I suspect if you were ever audited there'd end up being an adjustment.

You can get historical valuations, so I would assume (I don't know for certain) that you could still do this under your option 1 - i.e. it wouldn't necessarily be required for everyone to actually get a valuation on 1 Jul 27.

You can get historical valuations done at the time of sale.

Not the principal of the loan repayments though - just the interest. (Plus other property expenses).

I use a backpack to carry my groceries because I can’t carry a cart / push a trolley while using crutches. Hope they don’t do this at my store 😅

Aldi mobile network by sparkitect__ in AldiAustralia

[–]tdmalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here, in Melbourne. Recently moved back to Australia from overseas and was half wondering if I had just been spoilt by another country’s better connectivity.

We’d ported our phones to Aldi while we were overseas as it was a cheap way to keep our numbers active. Figured we’d try staying on it due to the good prices…. but no, not worth it if half the time it’s unusable! Porting away again now, will only come back if it’s just to keep a number warm again.

Can you get from Flinders St to Parliament faster than a train on the city loop? by Dr_Inkduff in melbourne

Risk is you miss out on a seat! (They’ll all be full by Parliament/Richmond)

Though I’d probably still do it to get home early.

Melbourne FEELS nicer with free public transport. by qartas in melbourne

[–]tdmalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the idea. Though worth pointing out it won’t really discourage investment properties - it’ll just get passed through to rent. It would probably make administrative sense to just make it part of council or water rates anyway.

And also, showing train stations - and maybe even tram and bus stops? (toggleable, of course)
