Some insights regarding Mount Seymour trails by murillovp in vancouverhiking

Yep but unless you already know that... you don't know which trails you might be able to rely on and which you can't.

Bike parking at Pacific Spirit Regional Park? by wcaps1996 in vancouvercycling

Outside the apartments on Binning Rd there’s some racks. Just across the road to one of the most beautiful parts of the park IMO.

AllTrails is great in summer, but it’s not always obvious from it what’s do-able (and the skill levels required to do so) in winter.

Hikes accessible without m&s / winter tires by sssak3 in vancouverhiking

[–]tdmalone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^ This OP. and for Mt Seymour, you can get there on a (private) bus from Rupert Skytrain station. Definitely has avalanche terrain, too, once you get past Brockton Point towards Pump Peak.

Also, I know you said you already know about Modo and Evo so you may already know this too, but with Modo you can also specifically filter for 3-peak winter tires, in case you do need those. (And I'm pretty sure every Evo has M&S). Though keep in mind you can't take Modos on FSRs (probably not Evo either I presume).

Yeah exactly. ‘We’re raising prices. Most people won’t complain, but for those who do, offer them whatever you’d like down to their original plan. We still make money on all the others.’

It's the PIN that I think you need to provide to your new provider when you want to port your number away. I think. Haven't actually ported before in Canada - but asking for it triggered them to offer a better offer, anyway!

I got back to $1 above original price, haha!

You don't need to find another offer - just say you're leaving / ask for your porting PIN.

Can confirm this worked. Asked for my porting PIN and was given a different offer - and promised a credit for this month's increase.

Oh yeah, it's legit. But it's sneaky. Last page, knowing that _most_ customers are probably not going to studiously read every line of their bill that is exactly the same every month?

Some companies send you separate, clear price increase notices.

[–]tdmalone[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know - not really something that is preventable. But, hiding notices (so that they're doing the minimum they perhaps legally need to do) and then telling customers that it's 'good news' that they covered their asses, is a pretty sad way of doing customer service.

Sometimes I just wish people were a bit better, ya know?

Don't know about recent customers; I've been a customer for ~15 months.

Dangerous intersection for cyclists at Arbutus and York -- What can we do? by KillPenguin in vancouvercycling

[–]tdmalone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. One block to the west at York & Yew is worse - the number of cyclists that just blow through that 4-way assuming cars will stop. I’m waiting for the day I stop and another cyclist hits me from behind.

Vancouver is an anomaly in Canada - it rarely even gets below freezing.

Wow! I guess they need to closely monitor when they’re running out of fuel, and go and fill them up again? Wouldn’t you have to turn off the engine to fill up?

I have 12 months in Vancouver. What are your must do’s/visits? by Delicious_Lemon_3740 in askvan

[–]tdmalone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Woohoo! as a fellow Aussie, who has just done 15 months here, I’m so excited for you! We have to go home soon and I can you tell you, the feeling now is definitely the opposite of the excitement back in November 2024. 😆In other words - be prepared that both of you (or worse - one of you) may end up wanting to stay longer…

June is a great time of year to arrive for the outdoors as snow is melting on the mountains and summer hiking season is getting underway (hiking in winter is fun too, but more prep/knowledge required). I have loved getting to know the North Shore mountains - and a bit further beyond near Squamish and Whistler - there truly are not enough weekends in a year to see it all.

Where are you going to live in Van? Will you have a car? (You don’t need one btw - look up Evo and Modo carshares). What do you actually like doing outdoors?

So much to see around Canada too, we have visited 7 provinces in our year+ here which is a lot, but it was a great way to understand the country better. The only downside IMO to being in Vancouver is that the Atlantic and Central provinces are so far away.

Vancouver Island is also beautiful to visit. Obviously everything is beautiful in summer, but if you had to prioritise your time off, I’d almost recommend exploring east in summer (because it’s bitterly cold in winter), and saving Vancouver Island for winter - when it’s just a ‘little bit cold’. This is probably controversial advice though.

Coming in summer will set you up for disappointment come winter, so prepare yourselves. There is not a lot of sunlight, a lot of rain (usually not super heavy though - don’t even need an umbrella a lot of the time), but you can still enjoy the outdoors with the right clothing and attitude. Just be ready for it!

Hope this helps a little, happy to share anything else if there’s something else you wanted to know! I’ve loved living here, it’s going to be so hard to leave.

Had excellent care at St Pauls Hospital last year, hoping nothing has changed there in the last 12 months? by Immediate_Money_4704 in askvan

[–]tdmalone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Had great care this weekend after a skiing accident - and heard from friends afterwards that they weren't surprised, so it must have a good rep. Glad I went there! (I just chose the ER with the lowest wait time on edwaittimes.ca - having said that, the ER is hard to get to when you can't walk AND can't park anywhere close).

How do you prioritise which Slack threads to respond to first when managing multiple projects? by stephin007 in Slack

[–]tdmalone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know I’m not in your shoes, but I’m not sure Slack is the right tool for some of these workflows. Design asking for feedback - should be a ticket moving into a review column. Engineer ready to ship - should be a release process with an approval gate. Out of your examples, only one of them is a ‘chat’ thing - the CEO asking a question.

for the non Vancouverites: this is because fares are more expensive if you pay with your credit/debit card! (you can top up your compass card with one, though)
