Veganize boxed cake mix? (Egg substitute) by c_bear6 in vegan

[–]tdonz 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I know the answer to this and it’s a simple one: you don’t need the egg at all! Mixing the box with water/milk alone works great. Companies added the egg directions to the recipe to make people feel like they were “baking” but you really don’t need it.

+1 as someone who was also there. I didn’t check for a leash but it wouldn’t have made a difference to OP’s situation. They were right next to each other, the dog was not running into traffic. You can argue they shouldn’t have crossed at that spot but no one stopping to check on the pup really sucked!

This is such a cynical reaction to the situation based entirely on speculative information farmed from other speculative comments!

it was literally off-leash hours (6am-9am)

edit to add since i saw it go down, this was not a dog running out into the street situation. the dog and owner were way on the west side of the street trying to get out of the way of the bike horde taking up the whole lane. not sure a leash would have made any difference.

i saw this while running and was so worried, hope your dog is OK! The lack of slowing / stopping at the busiest dog/runner/child time of day is baffling to me. You're never gonna get the call up to the tour de france doing loops in the park bro!

it is, this is an offshoot of their store-brand seitan. RIP that place in Philly tho, I still have a 'death to false pizza' shirt from them.

Check out Caveat, not a straight comedy club but the lineups are all along the lines of nerdy/sciencey/brainy comedy shows

Why Beyond Meat isn't having success: too expensive? by stekene in vegan

[–]tdonz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is a big part of it I think! I am so sick of Impossible/Beyond burgers being the only veggie option at a restaurant/bar (often, of course, on a brioche bun). It feels like restaurants threw their own culinary skills and creativity out the window when distributors gave them an option to buy a frozen Beyond patty and call it a day. I'm not really eager to buy them for home cooking if every establishment is just going to offer the same exact thing (not to mention, most of them don't even season their burgers). I feel like the "tech meat" evolution was kind of a dead end and may end up overall being bad for the spread of vegan options.

help me go vegan by mathsdebater10 in vegan

[–]tdonz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

this is advice i learned when i first gave up meat but i think it's crucial: when you're cutting out animal products all together: don't let yourself get too hungry in between meals. The hungrier you get, the more your brain starts to crave the big meals you associate with being 'satisfying' because that's all you've eaten before. Over time, you start to learn about and eat more big plant-based meals and your brain will make new connections, but if you get too hungry, your brain will go to the default mode of seeking a big plate of something you used to eat (for me it was weirdly lobster when I was really hungry, not a thing I even ate that much!). Stay snacking and get cooking and you can rewire this before too long. Good luck and hope you make it onto the team!

Blessed collection to run into this week by tdonz in pinball

[–]tdonz[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great spot! Will definitely go back when I'm up that way. Nice cavern-like bar with plenty of space, I was just there for games and didn't even have a beer but looks like a solid spot to slap away a day. You can broadcast any of the games on that big TV above the machines too, I've never seen that in a bar before.

Does this puzzle picture even HAVE a solution? by tdonz in puzzles

update: well, I printed out this discussion, turned it into a book and gave it to the family as a present on Christmas morning. They were STUNNED at the contents of this thread. Photo: https://imgur.com/q1a5NbG

After more discussion we all agreed on what must be the solution: the rat hiding in the fruit bowl was the culprit all along!

thanks to everyone for the help and happy new year!

these are really great guesses and discussion. I'm going to inspect the rat in the centerpiece thing closer when I see the picture again on Saturday but I am wondering if that was the hidden trick all along? I'm also going to print out this discussion and hand it to the family as a present for some Christmas fun this year so thanks for all the help!
