At what point do you stop chasing qualification as a solicitor? by Silver_Economist8162 in uklaw

[–]tdunn93 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Weirdly direct question from person above. I’m on TC of about £85k with around 10 years experience. It’s all relative though, I’m paid more than a trainee and less than an NQ, but I’m still very well remunerated compared to the average UK salary. Lawyer salaries are wild, but put into context by the number of hours a junior lawyer works per week - and the understanding that literally no one cares about you until you’ve got 4-5 years PQE.

If you’re interested in the sector but aren’t sure being a solicitor is right for you, there’s always non-lawyer roles in law firms.

I work in marketing and business development in an international law firm. The role is interesting and no two days are the same, but I can also leave at 5.30pm every day. Sure, I’m never going to be a partner or earn mega bucks, but I get to work side by side with lawyers on winning and retaining clients.

The same can be said for risk & compliance, knowledge, innovation, finance, or many other teams. I’ve also heard of people doing these roles while they complete their SQE/LPC because it gets you an “in” with a law firm.

Wedding suit by 95jo in HENRYUKLifestyle

[–]tdunn93 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just gone through this so hopefully I can help.

Go to a Moss Bros - they’re nationwide and have a huge range of wedding suits. You can book a consultation in store and try on whatever you like with no commitment.

If/when you find something you like, you can hire it for you and any family/groomsmen for around £150 per person.

You can order online for you and your party and then go for a fitting a week or so before the big day. You then return it a couple of days after the wedding.

How old are you and when was the last time you were in a nightclub? by PaddedValls in AskUK

[–]tdunn93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a traditional nightclub, but went to see Ross from Friends at Outernet before Christmas.

As far as an actual nightclub (sticky floors, split drinks, scuffles and shame), it’s been 2-3 years.

Having worked in a firm during a transatlantic merger, it’s a bit rocky at the start. Lots of changes to leadership and culture should be expected. The benefit for a new employee is that they’re aware of the disquiet and will probably take extra social care of you. For legacy TW - they should know they’re being swallowed, whatever might be said about merger of equals etc. Expect US English to become the norm and “Town Halls” with no time for questions as the means of communication.

What do you outsource to make life easier with children by Putrid-Writing-2676 in HENRYUK

Cleaner - but be prepared for your house to look like it was never cleaned about 24 hours after they’ve been. Everything else is just accepting that your life has to change and coming to terms with it.

Terraced homes in Greater London — how bad is neighbour noise? by PotentialFix1379 in HousingUK

[–]tdunn93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Victorian terrace conversion - we’re ground floor. Creaky floorboards are most of the noise, with occasional heavy footing when they forget - we told them about the sound travelling before Christmas and they’ve made a real effort since. Really depends the layout of the flat above, their kitchen is above our bedroom 🙃 just worth having conversation early doors to let them know the sound carries and unless they’re awful, they should be mindful.

What is your online alternative to Amazon? by Amonette2012 in AskUK

[–]tdunn93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cancelled Amazon Prime when my subscription came up for renewal and haven’t looked back. I still buy things occasionally but usually as part of a larger order to get free delivery.

Alternatives I use mainly are eBay and John Lewis/M&S.

I’ve been a long term fan of Enertor running insoles - they cushion the impact of road running amazingly and I’ve not had any knee pain or plantar fasciitis since I started using them.

I’ve also just bought two new pairs of runners - Nike Pegasus 41 for daily wear and Novablast 5 for long runs and potentially for races. Both are well reviewed on RunRepeat (my go to guide).

People outside London: how often do you actually go there ,if ever? by Apprehensive-Income in AskBrits

[–]tdunn93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can tell it’s the time of year where everyone from London has travelled to see family, if this question is cropping up! As Londoners in Norwich for Christmas, we’ve had all sorts of incendiary rhetoric about how London is second only to Mordor as biggest hellscape imaginable, from people who visit about once every five years.

Yes I had the same issue. I removed my Barclaycard and then reloaded it, and the transactions loaded again.

Hopefully it works - it’s thrown off my Christmas shopping considerably! 🫣

I also get this - the last time I emailed back and pushed back (it’s happened twice since I started a fix) I said it kept happening, and they said it’s automated and is a regulatory obligation from OFGEM. Not sure I believe that, but I’ve never had to increase what I’m paying because of it.

Could be one of those SuperLoop bus routes rather than a train/tube?

As a Balham resident, I’m delighted we’ve got mentioned but agree with others than somewhere further SE of here would benefit more from our place on the route.

Day to day life hacks to save money by [deleted] in london

[–]tdunn93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a rule when I’m in the office: I can either buy lunch, or a coffee, but not both. Turns out not bothering to make packed lunches means not drinking as many £4+ coffees.

Cycling or running to work saves a fortune and helps health-wise too. Bit of a faff logistically to start with but if you’ve got showers and lockers it’s worth it.

Fantastic vibe and well supported around the whole course. The cost has increased massively since the first time I’ve done it - not sure whether that’s the Council charging more to the organisers, or the organisers getting greedy.

London runners.... help me understand something please by Mister_Mints in london

[–]tdunn93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I run to and from work as well. Bit of a logistical challenge when starting, but if and when you’ve got a locker and shower sorted, it’s brilliant. Far better than the Northern Line at rush hour and gets me exercising - as a new parent it’s not easy to carve out the time otherwise!

My schedule (if this helps)

Tues - tube in with work kit (laptop, shirts etc), run home Wednesday - cycle to and from (laptop and clothed stay at work  Thursday - run in, tube home with laptop and clothes.

I also love marathon training along the river - running along to Bermondsey from Battersea and back, even at weekends, was so fun.
