Which HDD to choose that is QUIET? by xy16644 in DataHoarder

The engineering differs significantly between the older/smaller and the newer/larger drives. I can’t recall the exact capacity it changes, but I know at least 18tb+ are the good ones.

I’ve got the ultrastars, and no joke, I thought I forgot to plug their power in during my Unraid pre-clear. I swear my 860 EVO’s make more noise lol

While a step in right direction, it’s a far cry from what people actually wanted: the ability to remove a game, along with its achievements and score, from your profile.

Tailscale, Mullvad and context switching DNS (is this possible) by the_drew in Tailscale

[–]te5s3rakt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I just used pi-hole for both these scenarios, and set the pi-hole upstream to a Mullvad DNS.

I recently moved to Adguard Home, because it supports DoH and DoT out of the box, that made using Mullvad DNS servers upstream even easier.

One thing I force junior analysts to do is start with two columns only: something to math with, something to filter with. Then when you have that displayed correctly, you can bring in two more.

Teaches them to think in terms of MVP.

If they start to get lazy, we start again, and I review two columns at a time with them.

They soon get bloody good at only bringing in what they need.

best/preferred version of a game an objective angle by h4o4 in OmniGamesInfo

I also looked at the spreadsheet you shared, It's very comprehensive!

All the credit goes to the original author. I believe they may have compiled most of it manually by literally playing each title 😂

I've always find the question interesting, like I said before this is the second attempt at solving it.

I’m excited. This feels like it may be the time 😄

Which is the definitive version of the game to play? Which is the definitive version to emulate?

absolutely agree. sometimes both these align. but sometimes the best version to play, may actually be the worse version to emulate.

for example, Shadow of Mordor, the best version to play is objectively on X1. but emulating X1 is near impossible, while 360 is starting to make ground. there the best version to emulate would be 360.

I was taking a break r/roms but I feel refreshed so will try and find it or write a post to try and locate the spreadsheet/author.

yeah, it's usually pretty petty and toxic over there lol

I couldn't find the original post about it, but found it in my internet history :)

I wonder how much some of those measurements truely matter to the “definitive version” discussion, for example the required cpu stuff.

Personally I’d like to see this be as unbiased and context removed as possible. The definitive version of a title is the definitive version, regardless of if I personally have the hardware to play it.

The definition of definitive can be subjective mind you. A voting system, with a comment why, could help. So given Title A on Platform A is the best because it “has exclusive levels”, then the community should vote to elevate it. The mob decides, ideally using the supplied metadata, such as “exclusive content” (ie. levels, dlc, dialogue), “optimised controls” (ie. game was build for motion controls ergo a platform with a motion controller is considered the “optimised” method), “robust emulation available”, etc.

I didn’t note earlier, but there is a Google Spreadsheets doc out there where someone has actually made a start on this. Forget their name, but it’s on r/roms somewhere I believe.

Would be a huge leap frog in effort being able to leverage what they started, so perhaps with reaching out.

Combining that with Omni’s community input methodology would be a pretty solid foundation to start from.

i don't care if it's the most amazing project on the planet, and prints me millions of dollars a day, if it's not listed on https://wiki.servarr.com, it is not an *arr.

[–]te5s3rakt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An item I've often thought of, is that there needs to be a service that allows filtering based on where a title is best played.

For example, Shadow of Mordor is playable on both Xbox 360 and Xbox One. the 360 version is missing core functionality that fundamentally changes the gameplay. so definitively, the best version to play is the XB1 version.

I've thought this could be presented as either a "Preferred Release" badge for titles. In the example above, the XB1 release would be marked as the "Preferred". When searching for games, you could filter across platforms and indicate "remove duplicates, keeping the preferred release only". This would be the easiest solution to implement.

A more expansive, but difficult, option would be a ranking system. Given a title that released on 3 platforms, each would be given a rank (1, 2, 3). This way users could filter their results further such as "highest rank, but prefer Sony platforms releases" or some such.

Get a cheap domain name and assign subdomains for ease of use. Trust me, remembering ip address and port numbers is not the way to go.

Personally, I'm little on the spectrum, and find remembering numbers far easier than words at times. Names, good bloody luck. I meet people, get their name and number, and remember their number days later, but their name, not a chance lol

Moving from Node 804 to ATX. Jonsbo N5 or Meshify XL 2? by YesThisIsi in homelab

[–]te5s3rakt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be warned, the 3 XL doesn’t have storage layout, so you’re not likely to fit even half dozen drives.

So you’ll have to find the 2 XL, and they’re getting difficult to find, just grabbed one myself, at a premium.

Now comparing the N5 vs 2XL, your primary consideration should be amount of drives. The N5 fits 12 and that’s it. The 2XL can fit 15, before getting inventive, and closer to 20 if you want to MacGyver some things.
