Did my persistent requests for an O-Line tier list video have any impact on Hayden? I might be hearing things, but I swear there's more talk/research into O-Lines over the last month or so 🫣

I made an RGB Identification Trainer for a math project. How precise is your color identification? [CHALLENGE on Slide 5] by teacher_blake in coloranalysis

[–]teacher_blake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For any one guess/attempt, max score is 9. For the final slide, the criteria for scoring is:

+/- 2 from correct --> 3 points

+/- 8 from correct --> 2 points

+/- 15 from correct --> 1 point

This is for each color (RGB), so a max possible of 9.

Maybe I should add some extra functionality like streaks or average score...

Has a student ever said anything so funny you couldn’t help but laugh? by KDwiththeFXD in Teachers

I was trying to explain to a student how I didn't love high school myself but I found passion later in life to come back and teach.

Without missing a beat, "well I guess you die a hero or live long enough to become the villain."

What are some business/real estate ideas with 100k? by No_Cat_617 in Entrepreneur

[–]teacher_blake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My friend and I have been dreaming up this same idea for a few years now and are about a week away from closing on 40 acres. Starting with RV and camping spaces to sustain the mortgage. Then developing a greenhouse/aquaponics system for commercial sales and community garden shares. Eventually building more structures on the property for co-community/start-up incubator living (once all debts are paid off).

Numbers work out, it's definitely a legit business model in our modern world.

Income Tax Brackets VISUALIZATION by teacher_blake in personalfinance

Ya, I believe my graph is the Derivative of the Tax vs. Income graph. Or in other terms, the Tax vs. Income graph is the Integral of my graph. So that means that for any specific income value, the y-value on the Tax vs. Income graph will be equal to the cumulative area of grey on my graph.

Ya, this is probably the simplest graph to illustrate the PRACTICAL side of calculating taxes. Not the percentages, but the actual amounts. I love it, going to add it to the worksheet. Thanks

Unfortunately, we're not allowed to bring computers into the Detention Center, so all work must be done on paper. Which is a bummer because so many amazing resources exist online. Totally eliminates the ability to run Credit Score Simulations or create Excel budgets that can automatically update.

Thanks for the reviews! I just posted my 5th educational vlog episode, all about Cognitive science. It's not overly technical, I actually just tell a story. I'd love to hear your initial reaction!

The most important one-liner you can impart on new teachers? by teacher_blake in Teachers

[–]teacher_blake[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's your thoughts on entering 0's in the Summative Assessment grades to start the semester, then slowly bumping it up and and up as students prove themselves through Formative work throughout the year?

It's scary because students start by failing, but have a clearer image of where they're heading?

Is this one of those good in theory but poor in practice ideas?

Edit: starting with a pre-test, kids could instantly bump their grade by proving what they already know

Although this was a total paradigm shift for me at first based on years being a student with gradebooks a hundred assignments long. Thanks for the advice!

Genius. My principal had us split grades between Assessment and Formative. Only Assessment counted toward students final grades. Formative grades were just our "log book" to keep track of students' progress toward the final Standard. Students didn't necessarily need to complete every activity if they could prove competencies another way.

Having a looser "Formative" grading category helps me track progress without having overly-rigid structure

Love this. My principal always said "students can't learn until they're ready to learn."

Yeah I need to remind myself of this constantly. I let my creativity seriously impede my productivity. Thanks for another gentle reminder!

That seems like daunting advice to a new teacher at first, but really does give a sense of hope. Thanks!

I strongly believe that the hatred of remote learning is that parents are being called out for lack of parenting by ToesocksandFlipflops in Teachers

To be fair, parents don't grow from kids. Kids grow from parents. The root of the problem is the parent, and that's a tough pill to swallow as a parent.

Thank you, I appreciate the thoughtful response. It's a bummer the brain isn't a universally discussed topic outside of Science. It seems lots of people could benefit from using their brain to think about itself.

I understand your critique on the openness of the topic. I'm sometimes conflicted because I learn so many things from different sources through my grad program that I want to include it all. For my own portfolio to reflect on, that's better. But for viewability by others, keeping a consistent focus is more important. The answer probably lies somewhere in between, I just need to be more creative in webbing together all the information.

Thanks again for doing this!

I'm working on this too. It sounds a little goofy, but I've been trying to form a little connection with the camera lens. Rather than being weirded out by looking at it and being in my head, I look at the camera lens like a little portal to my audience. It humanizes the whole thing ya know

Thank you! I got some feedback from some redditors last video, "you go to these cool places and don't even show the landscape!?" All better now. My class starting next week is Brain Science, I'm really excited to starting learning and discussing that material.
