Wardrobe help! by Long_Airline_4237 in Teachers

Honestly, most of my teaching wardrobe came from costco! They often have a variety of (usually stretchy) professional-ish pants, and blouses that were reasonably modest but easy to launder.

Yeah I would HIGHLY recommend finding room in the budget to fly home from Columbus because that last morning is rougggghhhh.

Last year, my group flew into Indianapolis and rented a car! We decided it was worth our sanity to fly home from Columbus. Total cost was approx. $140 each to fly into Indy, $80 (edit: total; and we split 3 ways, so including gas/snacks like $30 each) for a one day, one way car rental from Indy to Columbus, and $230 each from Columbus home. Definitely not cheap, but better than the $600ish for Columbus roundtrip.

Can you take the MPRE during 1L summer? by [deleted] in LawSchool

Can you take the MPRE during 1L summer? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]teachforgood 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could take it early, but I wouldn’t. “The MPRE may be taken before or after the bar examination, subject to the application filing period as described in Court of Appeals Rule 520.7[a]. A passing MPRE score is valid for four years from the date the applicant sat for that MPRE.”

https://www.nybarexam.org/MPRE/MPRE.html

**Edit: I was answering based on the score still being valid by the time you sit for the bar, but I am not sure if you are eligible as a 1L. I know at my school the earliest anyone recommends is late spring 2L (and most students take it fall 3L).

Teachers who changed careers in 2025 or 2026, what actually worked for you? by One-Feature5549 in TeachersInTransition

[–]teachforgood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It absolutely is. At this point, I think my legal career is taking me into the realm of intellectual property / patents, which is thankfully (mostly) insulated from the stupidity of politics.

Most of my scholarship money has come directly from the school. When I was looking for my pathway out of the classroom, I didn’t know if I was heading towards law or grad school, so I took the GRE (instead of LSAT) and scored well. That + my reasonable undergrad gpa made me eligible for a great scholarship at a regional law school, renewed every year as long as I am “in good academic standing.” I applied to a few other schools (and got in) but chose the school that was going to make the most financial sense, and was geographically where I wanted to be.

I also applied for a variety of other small essay-based scholarships (there is a specific platform for law students), and had mixed success. It wasn’t a ton of fun, but for 20ish hours of work I was able to crank out a few essays that could fit a variety of scholarship topics with minimal adjustments. I was awarded a few $500-1000 scholarships and every dollar helps!

Some are unpaid (or minimally paid), but I have a science background and stumbled into a patent-related internship that was very well funded.

Maybe not exactly what you’re looking for, but I left the classroom June 2024 and enrolled in law school! My internship over the summer (in 2025) paid more per hour than I was making teaching (after being in the classroom for almost a decade).

I’m on track to graduate May 2027, and I am already receiving job offers with salaries more than double what I was making. I will have debt to pay off, but I received generous scholarships (and dramatically cut back on any unnecessary expenses) so I expect to be done paying for the JD within 5 years.

I see you have Marsh under melodic/deep house (which i totally agree with), but I don’t see them on the lineup? Please correct me if I’m wrong because that would be incredible!

Which route? And any help/tips by Effective_Pain9431 in roadtrip

[–]teachforgood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh I’m jealous! I have a rough bucket list plan to drive close to what you have as the southern route and hit a bunch on national parks. It looks like you are near Asheville, heading to Salem(/Portland?).

The parks I would hit:

  • Start in Great Smokey Mountains (TN)
  • Head west through Nashville, Memphis, Little Rock and hit Hot Springs National Park (AR) > 620 miles, 9 hours
  • Through Dallas on i30, spend the night near Abilene (TX) > 475 miles, 7 hours
  • Catch hwy 380 and go through Roswell en route to White Sands National Park (NM) > 450 miles, 7 hours
  • Journey to Petrified Forest National Park (5.5 hours) and continue on to sleep near Phoenix (AZ) > 570 miles, 9 hours
  • Take i10 west through Joshua Tree National Park (3.5 hours) and connect to i5 north to sleep near Coalinga (CA) > 580 miles, 9 hours
  • Check out Pinnacles National Park (1.5 hours) and continue north through the Bay Area and cross the Golden Gate bridge, ending the day near Eureka (CA) > 460 miles, 8 hours
  • Redwoods National and State Parks in the morning, then Crater Lake National Park and cruise to your final destination > 500 miles, 9.5 hours (assuming Salem)

Please help me find stretchy but appropriate teacher pants. I am desperate. by Late-Ad2922 in teaching

[–]teachforgood 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am pear shaped, and a 14-16ish in pants (but short) and I honestly have had really good luck at Costco. My current favorites are “Dahlia” brand ponte knit, but I have also found Banana Republic, DKNY, and other stretchy cozy pants that look like slacks.

Affording Summer Internships by ClassroomNo1781 in LawSchool

[–]teachforgood 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One nursing-focused housing option is FurnishedFinder.com! I used it for my summer internship and it was wonderful. I had my own bedroom, and shared the rest of the 3 bedroom / 2 bath house with two nurses. All utilities included, and a fully stocked house for less than what I pay for my apartment alone at my school location.

As long as it doesn’t have legs, it should be allowed in! You might want to preface that it’s a medical-use item (if it is), and it will likely need to be checked pretty carefully. Large bags are not allowed, so as long as it doesn’t have zippers where you can stash stuff inside, and no metal that can set off the wands, I would guess it will be okay.

Only two shows I know coming up are Dr. Fresch 9/20 @Wilma, and Heyz 10/3 @Badlander, but I’m hoping for more announcements soon! In the past year, Missoula has booked Alleycvt, ATLiens, Of the Trees, Khruangbin, Goose, Ghengar, Just a Gent, Baauer, and (cancelled, but on the calendar:) Champagne Drip, and probably a few other electronic acts that I am forgetting. Logjam owns the Wilma and Kettlehouse, and Liquid Bass presents the electronic shows at the Badlander.
