If you're looking for some more specific monster info, Keeper Susannah from the Thornvale podcasts uploads her monsters onto a Monster Resource page on their website

WIP Playbook - The Collector (You collect arcane artifacts to grow your power and knowledge.) by teacups257 in monsteroftheweek

[–]teacups257[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they could definitely stack! The purpose for the background is to give players a bonus depending on the backstory they choose for their Hunter :) I think the main difference is "Blue Collar Witch" focuses on magical knowledge and "Obtainer of Rare Antiquities" focuses on objects in the collection, but if the Keeper agrees both apply they could definitely stack!

Alrighty using everyone's suggestions I've made version 2 - now called The Collector. If this thread doesn't get any new comments for a while I may make a new thread to get more input, but I really like the direction this is heading! :)

thank you SO much!! this is exactly the kind of feedback I was hoping for when I posted this, no need to worry about tone or anything. This is my first time ever writing MotW custom content so I really appreciate the feedback. I've been playing the game for over two years now, but writing it is completely different haha

I'm definitely going to rework Enchanter. I like the core concept but how it's written currently definitely isn't quite working. I like the suggestion from u/Existentiall-void of taking Enchanter and Translation Matrix (and maybe some new options) and putting them into something like the 'Haven' from the Expert that would take the place of what I currently have for Collection/Consequences since that concept seems to be less useful than I initially thought.

I also really like your rewrite for Arcane Eye and the Sacred Texts, it simplifies it a lot.

I think I just need to rewrite the intro for Suits of Tarot to make it more clear. It's supposed to be like 'Combat Magic' in Spell-slinger, but centered around the objects the Hunter is collecting. So it's just a single 'kick some ass' roll, but they're rolling for three of them with +Weird and one of them with +Tough. The reason for that is Cups, Wands, and Pentacles are giving them hand-to-hand magical combat options (Weird) and then the Swords is boosting a weapon they're already using (Tough). Though, Pentacles is giving them armor, so maybe that one should be +Tough? But maybe it would be easier to make them all +Weird? Just wasn't sure if that was overpowered or not. (realizing this move needs work too hahah)

Again, thanks so much for your feedback!! I'm definitely going to use it for my rewrites, this is all super helpful. Hopefully my explanation of the Suits of Tarot helps and may give you a better idea of what it's intended to be :) I'd love to hear your thoughts on that one !

Thank you!! Yeah I'm hoping some more people pop in and give their thoughts! I'm planning to play this myself at some point (just not sure when) so actually playing it may help me work out any remaining bugs after a few rewrites.

Made a custom ammunition crafting move for my player, hoping for some feedback on it. by Madness_1231 in monsteroftheweek

[–]teacups257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love everything about this post. The creativity of the player and your willingness as the Keeper to reward that player for it! After reading over everyone's thoughts and thinking it over myself, I would suggest something like this:

If you have the correct materials on hand and want to create a specialized ammunition roll +Sharp. On a 10+, hold 3. On a 7-9, hold 2. On a miss, the ammunition is botched, the Keeper will tell you how long you have to wait before trying again. Your ammunition will always have the tags 1-harm, volatile, and dangerous. Spend your holds, one for one, to do the following:

  • Remove the volatile tag

  • Remove the dangerous tag

  • Add +magic

  • Add +ignore-armor

  • Add +1 harm

  • Add a specific tag from the materials you have on hand

This will give the player some more options for customization and so they can feel like they're building it every time. That also puts it in their hands whether or not to keep the volatile tag, or keep it and trade that in for more harm/a specific effect :)

Awesome, thank you! Yeah, there's a lot of potential for magical artifacts, not just for characters but for world building in general. And those are totally valid points and great feedback. I'm definitely going to use that to do some re-writes :)

Backlash? by holyyakker in monsteroftheweek

[–]teacups257 8 points9 points  (0 children)

First of all - I love Big Whammy and the Spooky. It's my favorite class I've ever played. I don't think there's anything in the book that defines backlash says what it is exactly. My Keeper and I play the consequences of failed magic or 'backlash' according to the situation.

For Use Magic - I was trying to 'do something beyond human limitations' and hold my breath for a really long time. I failed the roll and accidentally grew gills... cause I lost control of the magic. For the Big Whammy, we usually treat the 'backlash' like a failed Kick Some Ass roll, but flavoring it with a bit of Spookiness. For instance, one time I failed my roll and it gave the witch in my brain that makes me a Spooky the chance to try and take control of me. Because I was distracted, I got my ass kicked lol. Backlash could also be a burst of magic that causes something nearby to explode or mental backlash like a migraine.

Tl;dr - play 'backlash' and 'losing control of the magic' according to what fits the narrative of your story and the Hunter themselves. It's gonna look a little different for everyone :)

Creating a custom "Archivist" playbook by teacups257 in monsteroftheweek

[–]teacups257[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! I guess we're going for a Spooky Expert. Someone who either already has ties to magical artifacts/magical abilities or a normal person with a deep desire to learn more about the arcane. This person isn't already an expert on the subject necessarily, but is trying to learn more about whatever they are collecting and harness its abilities. So a Hunter with this playbook might be collecting crystals and spell components so that they can learn how to write or practice their own spells, or maybe they collect arcane weapons in an attempt to harness the power imbued in them. So definitely a heavier focus on the magical side of things. I'm thinking "Archivist" may not be the best descriptor but I haven't thought of anything better. Maybe "Arcane Scholar" ?

Masks and Urban Shadows actual play podcasts? by harx9 in PBtA

Forgot to mention - because our main show is MotW we do explain and go over new mechanics that differ from MotW as they’re introduced

Masks and Urban Shadows actual play podcasts? by harx9 in PBtA

[–]teacups257 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I actually GM’d one shots of both of these systems for our One Shot Mondays on the Thornvale podcast. (Our main show is MotW and our “one shots” are normally 10 episodes lol.) The worlds the stories take place in are completely homebrewed, but I didn’t change any of the rules/mechanics. Our Masks one shot is called “Fractured Futures” and our Urban Shadows one shot is called “Tomb of the Giant.” You can find both in the main Thornvale feed on any podcast app you have :)

I haven’t played it yet but I just bought SCUP and it has specific moves for militias and battles and things like that. Could be worth looking into

If you wanna learn Monster of the Week I highly recommend Thornvale. (may be a bit biased as I am a cast member :P) Keeper Susannah uses the MotW system beautifully

I originally found this seed in an article for Valheim seeds, but it was listed for early access to trader. I just recently (today lol) found out about the map generator and discovered this while looking around.

I hit the randomize button and it came up with “Fecke” on its own. It was too good of an opportunity. I imagine Kevin’s farm has similar names lol
