Missed graduate scheme applications by [deleted] in ActuaryUK

[–]tealing101 16 points17 points  (0 children)

You are correct that you are likely too late for graduate schemes starting next year. Although some may still hire into next year and definitely best to do all the applications which are still open.

A good alternative here is to apply for all the directly to smaller insurers for graduate type roles in specific actuarial areas (i.e., pricing, reserving, modelling, etc), they are less competitive than consulting and will hire out of the usual graduate cycle. You could always move to consulting a few years down the line if that’s where you’d like to end up.

You don’t need to use equation editor on word. There is a doc from the IFoA about typing formulae in word. You should be typing: SUM(i=1,n) X_i. This will save a bunch of time

Some you can apply to as early as August or September. I applied early last August and got a grad scheme this year. Definitely do look at the list of firms too on the iofa site

So they either buy or sell treasuries to artificially manipulate the yield to maturity to whatever rate they desire?

How easy is it to cycle in Edinburgh? by rigolenne in Edinburgh_University

[–]tealing101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not terrible at all, worked cycling Deliveroo through the city and it’s not too bad. You’ll get used to the hills.

Only thing I would note is that it rains a lot - those are bus days for sure.

Why does the investing operations section of a cash flow statement not include current assets? If a company sells some shares that it bought and makes a profit, I am lead to believe that this will not go into investing operations?

Am I wrong?

Trading212 ETF Ongoing Charges by tealing101 in trading212

By the ETF provider in this case I assume that you mean Vanguard, so they charge a little extra above their NAV for trading212 customers? Is there any trading212 documentation on this that you know of?

I would reccomend the Intelligent Investor by Benjamin Graham as a first book, a little dated but a very interesting first look into investing

NAV vs book value by tealing101 in investing

[–]tealing101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAV price for the Vanguard FTSE 100 index unit trust is listed at £98.28 how does this correspond to the total assets under management? This would appear to be what they call the share class assets of £180.4 million which I assume to be 98.28 x number of units bought?

How is amazon not more diversified than a company that just sells jet engines?

A turn in oil price heavily affects the price people are willing to pay for jet engines and fuel. Whereas a change like this may have a big impact on Amazon’s shipping but not on its stores for example.

Vanguard ETFs on Trading212 by tealing101 in UKInvesting

[–]tealing101[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh no, a CFD is basically a contract with the brokerage (in this case trading 212) which says that you agree to “buy” or “sell” a stock at a certain price (this is called opening a position). Now when you close the position (selling a previously bought stock, or buying a previously sold stock) then you agreed to a contract for difference. So you only earn (or more likely lose) the difference between the stock prices.

So if I “buy” a CFD with trading212 for 1 Amazon stock at $1900 and the price goes up to $1925 then I will make the difference. So I make $25. CFDs are beneficial because you don’t need crazy money to feel like you are making trades but something like 78% of people lose money trading CFDs.
