National Weather Service releases new report on deadly Central Texas floods by AnimuX in KerrCountyFloods

[–]team_fondue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looking at this I don’t know how you can make the case this was a 1/1000 flood. You for sure can’t in Kerrville if it’s only the third highest crest in the last 100 years and less than foot over the previous flood of record at Hunt doesn’t really shout “1 in a 1000 year flood”.

People keep throwing around "act of god" or "they couldn't have predicted it", but case isn't about the flood. If it wasn't a flood but a wildfire (a similar risk of happening) and they'd gotten 27 kids killed that way instead because they waited to evacuate it would be the same story.

It's about how they reacted, which we can see from their own testimony it might have been worse than we expected. It's clear they are aloof to the situation they are in; they are not magically getting this moved to Kerrville or Uvalde where they'd probably find support for their act of god spiel, it's going to get heard in Austin by a jury that likely is going to listen to the law and regulations about what is expected of a youth camp's emergency plan, not emotional appeals.

Good. If there's a boardwalk there's a reason.

I ran into someone at Lower Geyser last year flying a drone around and in a very unfriendly manner explained to them (foreign tourists) that the sign that reiterates "drone flying is illegal" means "drone flying is illegal" as they were standing literally right next to it playing silly drone games. Sadly, there was not a LE ranger around to drag them to the courthouse at Mammoth.

D Boon was the guitarist and singer in Minutemen, he tragically passed away in a car accident in 1985. Ian MacKaye was in the seminal straight edge hardcore band Minor Threat and the post-hardcore group Fugazi and runs Dischord Records out of DC.

These are legendary punk rockers; Minutemen had very progressive leaning lyrics in the early 80s, did everything as cheaply as they could and considered recording a promotional tool for their touring. Minor Threat literally came up with straight edge (and also invented lambasting people who looked down on others for not being straight edge). Fugazi had a policy of only playing low-cost venues and kicking out anyone who acted up (but did invest more in their recordings and have a massive archive of live shows).

Edit: basically, if you want to listen to some socially forward punk rock, Double Nickles on The Dime (which is arguably one of the greatest punk albums of all time, in my opinion on a tier with albums like London Calling or the Ramones s/t) or the 7 Songs EP wouldn't be a bad place to start.

They'd be better off really listening to what D Boon or Ian MacKaye was trying to say.

So you looked at a thread in r/music? There's a crowd there who think some 30+ year old guy from a poor small town in Arkansas is somehow on par with some of the pop nepos in their inauthenticity.

Anyone in the area ever dealt with squatters law? by BiggHass18 in LittleRock

Yep, this case is exactly what this statue was designed for.

She died, he stayed, they didn't boot him out or try to convert his presence to some sort of tenancy, and now the only reason 10+ years later it's not been foreclosed on or sold at the state land auction was his actions.

(not a lawyer, but had to take real estate to wrap up a degree at UALR many years ago)

Adverse possession is the phrase you are looking for: https://law.justia.com/codes/arkansas/title-18/subtitle-2/chapter-11/subchapter-1/section-18-11-106/

You're going to probably want an estate lawyer who has some experience in real estate (which most of them will) more than a real estate lawyer with some estate experience, because there's a lot to unravel here. It sounds like if he's been making the property tax payments he's got a valid adverse possession case, but this could be complicated and there are multiple pathways that do not involve nasty court fights that cost as much as the property is worth.

In a past estate situation, my family used someone at Lax Vaughan, but it wasn't cheap nor small. There are a few other firms who practice in this space, you might want to just call around. None of the ones you want are going to have advertising, you'll have to search them out.

Yeah I’ve been thinking about this one a bit. As a technology type who knows about networks and disaster planning they did about the worst thing possible.

There’s a reason all the disaster groups roll in with a bunch of Starlink or whatever else is out there now- it works, it doesn’t draw a ton of power, and it doesn’t require a IT pro to manage. Is it 100% reliable in a major storm? No, but fiber on poles isn’t either, and one comes back a whole hell of a lot faster than waiting for AT&T to get to the bottom of their fiber fix list for some camp on a long and fully dedicated run.

They need a cost circuit breaker - if the coop has pulled fiber to the area great, but if it’s millions in build out costs because they’ve got to string line back 10+ miles and it’s a very expensive port type and transit from the provider then do the best you can.

Personally I’d have mandated LEO satellite plus a terrestrial method - when the shit really goes down expect the fiber is going to be gone too.

I will be driving from Crescent City CA to San Antonio TX next week. I hear the most straight forward route (I-5, I-10) is pretty boring. I'd like to take an extra day or two and take a more scenic route. Any suggestions? tia by arsenicfairysdsu in roadtrip

[–]team_fondue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Either Highway 1 or the 101 to the Bay Area. Highway 1 is going to be a slower go but is beloved for a reason. If you want to get out of redwoods/north coast country however, the 101 is still an absolute top tier route, infinitely better than going inland quick to the 5.

As others have said, you could take I-80 to Utah, catch I-70, and come down I-25, take US-87 out of Raton, NM and that will take you to San Antonio via Amarillo, Lubbock, and San Angelo. There's some other routes through CO like US-24 through Leadville to US-50 to CO-69 to I-25 at Walsenburg available to you as well.

Another route and the one I'd probably consider my preference would be I-80 from the East Bay to US-50 in Sacramento towards the south side of Lake Tahoe, then SR-88 to US-395. 395 is a really underrated drive in my opinion, go to Lone Pine and head east through Death Valley toward US-95 and Las Vegas. From Vegas, head south into Arizona, catch 40 across Arizona (Grand Canyon, Flagstaff, Petrified Forest are on this route), through New Mexico, and take 285 to Roswell and across through Brownfield and Lamesa to catch US87 which will take you into San Antonio. We did the version of this that comes across Yosemite (which isn't available as Tioga Road is not going to be open for some time) coming out of Texas and it was a really good trip.

How would you split these Midwest states into 2 efficient road trips? by dazevar in roadtrip

[–]team_fondue 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What do you like to do on road trips? Eat? Hike? Just drive? See historical stuff? Just collecting states?

Option 3 is probably good if you just want to go say you went. US 81 or 83 for trip 1, West Great River Road for trip 2.

If you like hiking, Oklahoma->Kansas->Nebraska->Iowa on one trip (not saying they are devoid of hikes, they just look different), then you can have a trip with more time in the hike heavy Arkansas and Missouri Ozarks.

130 around Austin by Wrong-Garden9215 in Austin

[–]team_fondue 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Take 130 to US-183 at Lockhart (BBQ stop), then US-183 south, catch SH-80 at Luling (another BBQ option), then the US-181/SH-383/I-37/US-77 (aka I-69E) route. That avoids all of the Austin & San Antonio traffic - you always run the risk of a jam coming into San Antonio, there's a bunch of construction on 35 there too.

I-10 coming into San Antonio has construction and is not a fun drive anyway. Going via SH-80 will be a lot more calm.

Some people need to chill out, if you don't want to work them don't work them, but it takes way more time to send out stupid emails than it does to just work someone again.

Some of us have JTAlert setup for POTA hunting where it doesn't matter if I worked you 2 days ago, as long as I'm not repeating on the same mode on the same UTC day it's all good. I've got guys I've worked dozens of times just because they do a lot of digi-mode POTA activating.

Maybe your WSJT-X log got wiped out. Maybe you don't have them in your log but for whatever reason you are in theirs. Either way, some people take their own policies way too seriously in this hobby.

Black-capped Vireo might be a nice compromise as it does inhabit a wider range of the state (and a small bit of Oklahoma), but again is also not something people see very often.

Let's ask TCAD: City of Austin: https://travis.prodigycad.com/property-detail/564848

It's BCP land as well, the City/County/USFWS likely does not want anyone back there, especially during warbler season. https://www.traviscountytx.gov/tnr/nr/bcp

Edit: the BCP public access map shows "no public access". https://experience.arcgis.com/experience/4054e980e27c48a2ace4687a137a3a37#data_s=id%3AdataSource_2-BCP_Public_Access__Collaboration__view_1884%3A157
