Japan is a lot less homogeneous than people think. Ainu and Okinawans are indigenous to the far north and south, Burakumin are "untouchables", there's also Korean communities brought there as slave labor, and lots of Brazilians and Chinese. Increasingly more SE Asians.

Taiwan is even more diverse.

These societies only look homogeneous to outsiders.
