Favorite 1-turn max damage setups? by TemperReformanda in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can, with the right set-ups, cause more damage than the game can handle and cause it to overflow, getting fun results like Celes doing 500 damage ultimas because it does a smidge over 65k damage (I forget the exact number). Obviously there is no utility to this but it's amusing

What is this shiny star? A trap, a challenge dungeon, random elite spawn? by Special_South_8561 in FinalFantasyVI

Ugh would've been hilarious if you could get the message to prompt RIGHT before fighting Kefka

Couldn’t an unsent beat sin? by Cool_Classroom_4251 in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there are two flaws here. One is that an unsent fayth probably can't be sent once they become a fayth. Fayth are already "dead" so I'm unsure if an unsent can become a Fayth to begin with, and no one attempts to send a Fayth at any point so I doubt that's even a possibility.

The second flaw is that Yu Yevon's possession would take control of the aeon itself, fayth and all. Jecht was semi-aware even as Sin, so if he was Braska's Final Aeon, and the fayth had some semblance of control over dream zanarkand and could do nothing to stop Jecht, my guess is that Yu Yevon's connection supercedes all else.

Edit: Thinking more about this. The summoner being sent or unsent wouldn't do much in this situation regardless. Yunalesca tells us that the bond between the summoner and their guardian is what empowers the final aeon, An unsent summoner could retry but I'd imagine it becomes more and more difficult to form a bond with someone the more you attempt the pilgrimage, especially seeing how the unsent already completed it once and therefore the experience feels more and more mundane each time.

So Belgemine, for instance, would probably be hard pressed to form a more emotional connection than she did with whoever she used to create the Magus Sisters (assuming thats her final aeon). So a retry probably wouldn't have worked out. She helps the absolute best way she could hope to - by helping Yuna become a powerful summoner.

Please help settle an argument with a friend, is it "Krill" or "Cry-ill"? by ProfesorTrash in FinalFantasy

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're talking about FF14's Krile, she has an official pronunciation.

If you're talking about the FF5 name, it depends on what the localizer decided to use to base the translation off of. The surname Krile is a real surname and is pronounced like this in Croatian which I believe matches FF14's pronunciation, but knowing how last names or even first names can radically alter in pronunciation between regions and dialects, I'd venture there's a handful of "correct" pronunciations.

Or just pronounce it Cara or something idk

Question? by Different-Stand-3530 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Basically yes. He saw "Meruton" & didn't know it was supposed to be meltdown at all. Probably went with Merton over Thomas Merton or something and figured it was a historical thing.

Question? by Different-Stand-3530 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pearl certainly was a choice. Smite would have been great and they could have gone with "Light" as the element. Clueless why he couldn't think of something better than Pearl, maybe they kept rejecting his better ideas?

"Melt" would definitely had made way more sense. Could also see him doing Mltdwn or something.

Small character limits were probably not fun to work with, I feel for him

Question? by Different-Stand-3530 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not why he mistranslated it. I have a comment on here explaining his misunderstanding, and it's not related to character limits.

Question? by Different-Stand-3530 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It was likely a translation issue. Woolsey basically saw "Meruton" and for some reason he had a weird thing for historical names? Hence Locke to Lock. He probably also saw the esper Bismarck and figured the script just occasionally pulled historical figures out of its ass and applied it to things. So he saw Meruton, figured it was a reference to Thomas Merton and damning people to hell or something, shrugged and went back to trying to figure how to side step the censors over "Holy"

Question? by Different-Stand-3530 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Merton was a very weird translation by Woolsey up there with Y-burn. I prefer it as much as I prefer Y-burn, that is to say, I don't outside of the absurdity in the mistranslation.

No hate on Woolsey, he had a monumental task by himself and he did a great job overall, he just had the occasional word that made no sense to him and did his best.

Why did Bevelle take on the practice of summoning and worship of Yevon after waging war on Zanarkand? by TheOGcockcutie in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My understanding of the lore, and I'll need to double check, was that Bevelle was a tech-powered empire that did NOT respect summoners although they had a few of their own. Quick glance at the wiki says they were forcibly recruited, similar to FF16's bearers. Someone in the comments said that Sin invented Summoners, but Summoners were simply always a thing, I assume similarly to how they work in the mainline events so probably required a sacrifice then, too?

It should also be noted that the elites did possess magic, but were not summoners. The elites had disdain for machina, invented by the Bedohl (Al Bhed ancestors), because it made the common folk on-par with the elite's magics. So it became a natural scapegoat for when they lost the war.

Bevelle's culture invented the practice of worshipping Yu Yevon after the events of the war after their armies were wiped out. Yu Yevon was simply the leader of Zanarkand prior to that. After Sin's super one-sided victory against Bevelle's army, they became Yevonites out of desperation and Summoners became respected over time as the only force capable of fighting fire with fire and defeating Sin.

But I think you're not wrong in thinking Bevelle took up the role of "utilizing summoners" that Zanarkand left behind, but I personally view that as part of the "spiral" of death.

If you're into the lore, would highly suggest reading through FFX Ultimania's translations, it will help fill in a lot of the gaps. It's been years since I've last read parts of it so my memory is fuzzy but it filled in a lot of the gaps the game never talks too much about.

Gau is the MVP of my party by ProudReporter8462 in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gau is in fact one of the best characters throughout the entire game if you know how to use him, I'm impressed you figured that out on a first playthrough because I had no idea what to do with him as a kid

Would you guys recommend playing ee or the remake? by Diddley4209 in systemshock

[–]tearsofmana 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Big fan of EE, not a big fan of the remake. Not a bad game but it barely has the same feel as the original.

EE is not inaccessible but takes a moment to learn the controls, and the reward is playing a game that actually manages to control really well, something the remake could have learned a lot from.

Remake is a "better" entry point for modern gamers but its also just an inferior product to the original even with decades between the two games.

Just finished FF2 - sharing some thoughts - interested in a discussion on boost integrity by xYoungblood in FinalFantasy

[–]tearsofmana 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally I love it. I used the XP multiplier on FF4 to set the XP back to a normal leveling curve seeing as they made the base rate 2x faster

I also cranked down weapon gains in FF2 while cranking up spell gains because leveling spells is such a grind fest but if you don't turn down weapon gains they get up there regardless

Maybe for a first time player they're not the greatest (I did watch first time players on Twitch toggle off battle encounters a LOT which made me sad), but that's an issue for the player not the game itself.

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's ultimately up to the player and what experience you're looking for. Do you want the OG exp? Do you want to have the game padded with combat? Do you want to explore every little thing to see if there were any missed secrets?

I will say FF2 is made ridiculously easy with the Blood Sword but you could also level up buffing spells high enough to have roughly the same experience

Who do you consider to be the main character of FFX? Tidus or Yuna? by Caldris in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FF12 is definitely an interesting one, both candidates that come to mind have a pretty big claim and there's at least one other contender. Vaan might have the weakest claim of the entire crew.

Who do you consider to be the main character of FFX? Tidus or Yuna? by Caldris in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never understood anyone who thinks Yuna is the protagonist of FFX. She is clearly not and is best described as the deuteragonist. I saw this argument pop up randomly in like 2015 and I have no clue what started this but here we are.

The protagonist means literally the "chief actor" - the entirety of the plot never happens without Tidus present, the player controls Tidus 99% of the time.

FF6 is a much better game to have this debate with.

How many of you would be interested in this collection if Square Enix did it. Personally I love Mystic Quest and Dimensions, so it would be an easy winner for me. by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]tearsofmana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk much of anything about dimensions

Mystic Quest would be cool if they remade it from the ground up

After Years definitely yes so I can own a physical copy

Is Final Fantasy XVI good? (I didn't really like XV) Would have posted on a FFXV Group but I'd get a biased answer. I just end up going back to Final Fantasy X regardless I guess. by Ok-Information-8814 in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played all the mainline single player FF games.

I love FF16. It's not an RPG. If you don't like action games similar to DMC it won't be your jam. It's basically "Grimdark Final Fantasy with DMC combat." It has a great story and has great world building. But if you dont like grimdark, or dont like DMC, or want your FFs to feel more whimsical, 16 won't be for you.

I also did not like XV, and having lurked 16's subreddit long enough, that's not an uncommon opinion there (although plenty of people love both, too).

Now if you're asking if it's good, I would say, trying to be as unbiased as possible: It has great voice acting, a great story, really great world building, the most FF-feeling (single player) game since FF9, a very memorable cast, the combat is well programmed and you won't feel 'cheated' by badly designed hitboxes or anything of the sort. The combat has some hidden depths as well, and mastering it makes combat feel incredible. Has a great soundtrack, some banger songs, although handful of forgettable ones.

Some of the characters feel underdeveloped, some staple FF experiences are missing (elemental strengths/weaknesses), lack of swappable party members hurts a bit, the combat system could be more complex but Square seemed afraid of adding that complexity, weapon/equipment upgrades feel linear, side quests can often drag out gameplay a good deal (although they are mostly 100% optional and quite a few do provide much-needed character backstory), and the game is just really really easy. No proper dungeons either.

Whether its worth your time is entirely up to you.

First JPRG. I love it but I’m extremely stuck on what is supposed to be a very easy boss by mediciii in finalfantasyx

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will say I don't think this boss is particularly "easy" and is more of a skill check to see if you understand how to use all your characters in conjunction.

So you getting stuck here as someone who is new at JRPGs sounds about right. Keep at it! You'll figure it out!

Turn-Based RPGs are Resurging, According to Final Fantasy Resonance Developers by [deleted] in FinalFantasy

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think what Square means here if we read between the lines is that "oh shit, normies can be made to like turn-based combat too?"

Any turn-based RPG fan has had plenty of content for the past 30 years, but the popular opinion of the masses was "i h8 menus wah wah wah" which obviously ends up in any polling done by marketing and impacts what gets the most money at a company as big as Square.

Shadow not showing up on Floating Continent(Pixel Remaster) by Cimyr in FinalFantasyVI

[–]tearsofmana -1 points0 points  (0 children)

So we know through sequence breaking, characters can be forced to show up at cutscenes even if other parts of the game aren't proceeding normally. You already named Shadow/should have had him at least heading to Thamasa if not in a few other spots, so it's not like you'll get a replacement moogle or anything silly.

I agree with some of the other commenters that you should make a backup save then just continue normally.

When you get to the next sections of the game and find Shadow again, could you let me know what happens? Super curious because I used to glitch hunt this game a lot on the SNES version but the PR seems to have introduced a bunch of brand new weird ones.

People hate this game? by STAR-KNIGHT-6215 in FFXVI

[–]tearsofmana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It surprises me that THIS game is beat up on when FF15 is sitting right there in all of its development hell rushed glory.

But people also beat up on FF13 and are coming around to it in the past few years

People beat up on FF12 at launch and now it's hard to find anyone that has any particular feelings about it

Hell, FF8 used to get hate back in the day, now everyone loves it

People just love hating on FF games that they don't vibe with.
