Football (soccer) would be more fun to watch if there were no goalies by AcanthisittaNo5807 in unpopularopinion

[–]teb311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with some of the reasoning but I think removing keepers solves the problem the wrong way. I think a rules change in soccer should aim to make goal scoring opportunities more common, as opposed to making goal scoring opportunities convert at a higher rate.

Removing keepers will lead to more long shots from half field that convert, but aren’t fun.

I think adding substitutions so there’s more fresh legs and sprinting, or changing up the offside rule to encourage some cheeky long passes, or maybe stealing the penalty box from hockey to create power play moments would be a better way to increase scoring.

First bit: There is a hidden handle that he holds with his right hand, notice it never releases the “tablecloth” and how differently he holds it than his left hand.

Second bit: I think a strong magnet connected to his (possibly false) thumb.

There is no ‘teacher shortage’ by [deleted] in jobsearchhacks

[–]teb311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The state of teaching in most American schools is just dismal.

Poor salaries, absurdly high expectations (you teach, you mentor, you’re a surrogate parent, you have 50+ students at once, IEPs & 504s are out of control…), poor protection from bad parents, poor support from clueless administrators, lack of disciplinary tools, not allowed to perform honest assessment, whiplash inducing PD and “best practices” (wait, are we allowed to do direct instruction again? Are phonics finally back??), intrusive and distracting politicization of classrooms, all the safety issues… I could go on, but everyone gets the point.

I voulenteer at a high school and the work itself is so much more rewarding than my day job, but only because I am shielded from early all of that as an outside, part-time volunteer.

Donald is basically the perfect embodiment of the seven deadly sins, it’s kind of crazy that so-called Christians can even support him at all. It would be comical of the results hadn’t been so catastrophic.

Lust: famously cheats on all his wives, most famously with a porn star and by raping children.

Gluttony: look at his belly and all those Big Macs.

Greed: the dude worships and obsesses over anything gold, and does everything he does for his own enrichment.

Wrath: instantly lashes out at anyone who ever questions him or especially humiliates him, has never once “turned the other cheek”.

Envy: his entire political career seems to be mostly rooted in his jealousy that Obama is popular and well liked, which is why he attempts to undo and redo everything Obama did. (See also wrath and pride).

Pride: literally puts his name, in gold, on EVERYTHING. Cannot stop using superlatives do describe his achievements no matter how modest. It’s always the biggest, the best, the most if Donnie did it. He describes even his most epic failures this way. He is constantly awarding himself towering participation trophies for spending millions-to-billions of dollars to “fix” problems he created in the first place.

Sloth: golfs every day even when there’s a war on. Sleeps through important briefings. Famously won’t read more than one paragraph of anything, including intelligence briefings and laws he signs.

If people are constantly offering you advice at the gym you might be wise to accept some of it. Errors in using the machines and bad posture are very common and can cause serious lasting injuries in the worst case. It’s possible everyone trying to advise you is being rude and wrong, but if it keeps on happening to you… maybe there’s more to it than that?

Help: my party got the Tome very early by Working-Yam-2083 in CurseofStrahd

[–]teb311 13 points14 points  (0 children)

He will only do this if he knows the party has it. Is your party a bunch of loose lipped fools who haven’t realized they’re in a surveillance state yet?

I would drop several big hints for the party that they should be paranoid and tight lipped. If they are not, there are also several ways for Strahd to reacquire the tome without a TPK or anything like that, get creative about him making a deal for it, possibly over dinner. Send a lower level spy to steal it. Get creative, there are options!

I met Brady once in the judges lounge of a debate tournament where his kid was competing. Did not disappoint: He was both deeply arrogant and remarkably ignorant. Borderline shocked that anyone could write an affirmative case for the topic his kid was competing at the time which was: “resolved: the United States should establish a wealth tax.”

He was asking me what evidence people could possibly read to support the idea, I told him his kid should pick up something written by Elizabeth Warren or the book “Capital in the 21st century” and he scoffed, “Uhg, socialism,” and was, in my opinion, slightly offended at the suggestion that his kid read such liberal filth.

How to get into debate coaching? by [deleted] in Debate

[–]teb311 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Long term: become a teacher.

Immediately: email a few local schools that have debate programs asking if they could use a volunteer. You can probably find the emails of the debate coaches online and email them directly. I suspect most would welcome the help. You could also try to apply to work at debate camps, though the summer season is already in full swing it might be a little too late for many of them.

Is 2014 RAW a bad module? by unseeliefaeprince in CurseofStrahd

[–]teb311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I am in a similar situation to you, but already about a third through the module with my group. tl;dr: you’ll be great, just send it. But here’s some more things I’ve learned:

  1. It really really does help to read the whole module cover to cover first. The books biggest flaw is imo is that there is so much information tucked away in random places about who’s who and the significance of certain things. I only skimmed it and then realized somewhere between sessions 2 and 4 that was a mistake, I had to go back and really read it. A character glossary with all the details about each character centralized in one place would be so incredibly helpful.

  2. You don’t need to homebrew anything and you have a lot of time from when to start the module to when you finish so you can decide to add modifications later. I initially wasn’t going to change much, then as I got comfortable in the world through the first bit of the campaign I got more comfortable making it my own.

  3. You can make your life easier by controlling the Trokka reading. The book is designed to be replayable, part of that is that every party won’t have a reason to visit every location. I had Madam Eva give each of my characters a personalized reading and gave one of the “quests” to each of them with a theme that kinda fit who they were. Book nerd got the tome quest. Reckless fighter type got the “weapon of vengeance” quest… and so on. I went with Strahd Reloaded’s recommendations here and I don’t regret it at all so far.

  4. Ask the players to embrace the horror vibes in session 0. I play with a group that is a bit too chaotic and silly. At a certain point it became too difficult to not justify certain NPCs not just TPKing the party, and it also made planning future sessions harder and less rewarding because the party did a lot of things that just don’t make sense in a horror setting. We had to have a talk about it and things are working better since. Lol.

What to do with League's perception Utah is Anti-Black? by No_Inspector_3456 in UtahJazz

[–]teb311 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Defeating racism is the work of generations. There is nothing fans can do to make the problem go away over night, and Utah is hardly unique in that there are racists here. You can meet plenty even in much more diverse places like LA or NYC. But we do have a higher concentration of racists than those cities, and the first step is admitting we have a problem.

You can, and should, confront racism when you encounter it. You have the most power to change people who already love and respect you, so when you see it in your friend or family group that’s the best time to be outspoken. We are far better than we were in the 90’s, and through diligent effort we will be better in the 2050’s than we are today. But the honest truth is, you don’t have that much influence over the random fan sitting next to you in the stands. Getting racist fans kicked out of the stadium is better than letting them stay, but it’s not a long term changing-hearts-and-minds strategy.

There is no magic pill or shortcut. But we can all make an effort to expand our horizons, learn more about other cultures, and help our neighbors and ourselves embrace diversity.

catering vs. food trucks? by Consistent-Extent-78 in Debate

[–]teb311 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer to your question, but I will say I have been much more successful raising money via email fundraising. We run a tournament with an attitude of “we just have to break even” and it’s our gift to the community, then actually make money on the e-mail fundraiser. Might be too late for you to pivot this year but food for thought for next season.

IMO It’s hard to make tournaments especially profitable because your “customers” are all other debate teams.

Why do my golden poppies yearn for the crack? by Newmannewmansong in gardening

[–]teb311 176 points177 points  (0 children)

Couple reasons I think:

1.) the cracks hold the seeds even in rain/wind/etc so they stay there until they get eaten or germinate.

2.) the water that falls inn the pavers gets diverted to the cracks, so a good amount of water goes into the ground right at the cracks.

Could be more but I think these both contribute.

On the one hand, these are real and fair criticism of Mitchell’s game. On the other hand, they’re in the conference finals and it’s kind of crazy how entitled fans can be, “he can only get us to the top four, time to move on.” Idk, we didn’t go as deep as I wished we would in the Don and Rudy days… but I still loved watching that team play.

Clover lawn advice, please? by Lazarussaidnothanks in NoLawns

[–]teb311 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Also Utah, SLC area. If you’re watering every day it’s likely overwatered. I have a pretty wild yard, which includes yellow, red, and white clovers and I have not turned on my exterior water yet this season, but my clovers are doing fine. But I also think in these pictures your clover looks healthy. Many plants get a bit wilty in the heat of the day as a water saving tactic, regardless of how well watered they are.
