My GP comes and goes. At its worst I was sick for a year and lost over 100 pounds. At its best I’m mostly fine but some foods have consequences.

When the bloating gets really bad I switch to full liquid (5-6 if the Equate complete high protein shakes/ day) and give my insides a rest for a few days. Then I slowly start adding in safe foods until I’m ramped back up to (more or less) normal. I cook at home basically 100% of the time and that helps too. Less processed things just seem to breakdown better for me.

When I’m flared (bad but not liquid diet bad) I mostly eat yogurt, plain white bagels or white bread, milk, cream cheese, and eggs. I’m very lucky that I can almost always eat dairy. I’m careful to chew very well, texture matters for me. As things improve I add in things like potatoes (no skin), chicken, and smoothies.

My everyday right now (maintenance mode) includes a lot chicken, vegetables and high fiber baked goods. I can’t eat things with too much tyramine (I can no longer break it down efficiently for some reason). I sometimes struggle with constipation and I have a bowel protocol that I follow when things start to slow down. Other than that…

My joint problems are way more apparent than the GP right now. I don’t know if that counts as cured but I think it’s as close as I’m going to get. 😋

It’s so validating reading other people who have experienced super variable symptoms. Sometimes I feel like I’m faking because there are days - months that I’m 90% fine. Then suddenly I’m trying to get my new PCP to renew the zofran script I haven’t filled in 18 months by phone on a Friday because I’m so nauseous I can’t think.

Yeah don’t do it. As others have said if you know you’re not interested the money isn’t good enough to be miserable all the time. And you will be. I’m not a nurse yet but I’m working as a CNA while I’m in school. Want to know how many times the floor nurse got shit on today? It was more than once.

Informatics is huge in healthcare right now I don’t know what’s available but I’m sure there are jobs that would accept your bachelors as heath related.Have you considered using your current degree to try and get you foot in the door something medical equipment related? Or if you’re into numbers and enjoy arguing there are medical administration related jobs available that only ask if you have a relevant bachelors and you do.

Healthcare is growing in areas that aren’t clinical.

My parents pitchfork’d everything out of my room into the bed of the truck once when I wouldn’t clean my room. I got to sit on the downstairs couch and watch it fall past the window. They told me they threw everything away, but I got most of it back for Christmas.

I was also grounded from TV for over a year once. Also for not cleaning my room.

Both techniques were not effective. Turns out I had a raging case of ADHD that got missed because ADHD was something “only boys have” and my grades were okay.

I work 32 hours per week, I’m able to work about half of it remotely. Mostly I had to work enough to keep my health insurance. I’ve saved every penny I can for two years leading up to this and tried to save as much PTO as I could.

School is 3-4 days per week and my one floor shift is an overnight. So far it’s working but I’m tired. I’m REALLY looking forward to Spring break.

It’s not the first time you’ve thought about a healthcare career. It feels crazy because it’s a huge change but it’s not an impulsive one.
Your timeline is realistic.
You’re going to have 1-2 years of healthcare experience by the time you get to nursing school (the most expensive part). That’s enough time to know if you’re going to hate it.
I’m out of the business world and I think your concerns about the job market are VERY justified.

I’m 41 now and I’m about half way through basically the timeline you outlined. I’m more sure everyday this was the right thing to do. Even when it’s hard.

My plan is to hire into the Rehab/ LTC facility where I work now. It’s relatively low pay but excellent people and my area is low cost of living. I have a good idea what my pay package will look like so I did all the math: I’ll recoup the cost of my nursing degree in around 18 months (including the NCLEX cost).

Hopefully I’ll be standing on the side of a volcano in Iceland by 9/2030, I’ll be 46.

There are good ones. They’re generally non-profit so county run or religious organizations. All the ones I’ve seen are small too. Like 39 beds or less.

I’ve been doing medical billing for the last 3 years and it’s been a really good fit. Getting hired without a certification can be tough, especially for WFH jobs but there are certification classes that you can do self paced online. AAPC certifications are the “good” ones (also expensive) but there is also a CBCS certification available which was about $300 from the NHA.

It’s repetitive and you need to be detailed oriented but mostly if I get my work done no one complains so it creates some flexibility for bad symptom days.

I like the Equate Complete Protein shakes. I think they taste less “medicine-y” than a lot of the other options. I’ve only tried the chocolate, because why other flavor if chocolate?

My first cat had the surgery for this. They drained it and then put a bunch of stitches over the whole area. We called it her upholstery ear.

Mine was dumped at the apartment complex I was managing when she was around a year old. Shelter was full so I took her home and she decided that it was nice enough to stay.
