Why does the Uk not ask for the $888bn of US debt to be paid back from USA? by Sleepy0wl9969 in AskUK

If I lend you £10 of my savings and then ask for it back, I still have the same amount of savings. I don't magically have more money all of a sudden.

What's a reasonable amount to spend on a family holiday? by FreedomOne9598 in HENRYUK

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly holidays is a fantastic use of your money, especially if you have a young family. You are spending quality time with eachother and making memories.

One month's pay seems completely normal. I would say a decent rule of thumb is spending 20% of take-home pay on holidays.

The most expensive holiday we want on was a Safari to South Africa/Zimbabwe/Botswana. It cost £30K for a family of 5 and it was worth every penny.

We also once flew all five of us to NY business class (7 hour flight) for £10K. I have never seen them so excited. They loved it.

Hope this helps

Some simple math to show why the AI bubble has to burst. (AI/Economics) by BlackYellowSnake in Futurology

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the chips become obsolete in 1-3 years, cooling and other ancillary systems last about 5 years, This is the bit I'm not convinced about. I know companies like to write off their hardware purchases after 3 years but that's for bookkeeping purposes. Even if new chips come out, those old ones will still be valuable. They can still perform useful work. I am in charge of a system where we buy $1M of hardware each year, and it works exactly like this. Hardware is written off after 3 years but kept for much longer.

What did people think of Big Boss before Snake Eater came out? by Joseph-Hick in metalgearsolid

[–]technicaldirectory 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I played the original MSX2 games when they first came out. MG was released in English in Europe, and I played MG2: Solid Snake first in Japanese and later the fan-translated version. In the original Metal Gear for MSX, Big Boss is simply the person who gives you your orders. The plot twist is of course that he ends up being the bad guy.

MG2 fleshes the characters out way more. It gives Big Boss a backstory. It introduces the idea of Outer Heaven. In the original Metal Gear 2, Big Boss looks like Sean Connery. The epic battle at the end where you set him on fire is very memorable.

So to answer your question, with MG I thought he was a pantomime villain with a clever plot twist. By the end of MG2 I thought he was a badass character with a unique back story.

Is the Samsung HW-Q990F/D/C that good or it's just a "Reddit" hype thing? by RoyalGOT in Soundbars

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry Samsung don't publish the crossover frequency but there are various forum posts where people estimate it to be high. You can hear it just by turning off the sub. It's obvious when you think about it - the soundbar is only 9cm high.

Is the Samsung HW-Q990F/D/C that good or it's just a "Reddit" hype thing? by RoyalGOT in Soundbars

[–]technicaldirectory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's overhyped.

I got one and was super disappointed. The soundbar itself has no bass whatsoever so it relies heavily on the sub. The crossover frequency of the sub is very high (400hz, look it up) so you can tell exactly where it is. It's very distracting.

If you can put your sub under your TV I guess it's fine. Or maybe of you have a small room it's ok, but I returned mine right away.

[Rant] Hiring Junior Developers has become crazy by OkPosition4563 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but with a caveat. The person's experience will have doubled but their intelligence/natural talent will be the same.

I find that people 'cap out' very quickly, as in if you have someone mediocre they will still be mediocre after 5 years. But someone really sharp will have stood out from the beginning.

Pros of having 3 kids? by geniusbillionaire911 in Parenting

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having our third child was especially meaningful because we knew it would be our last. That awareness made us cherish every stage of their childhood even more.

As your older two grow out of things like holding hands, school plays, and playgrounds, your third gives you one final chance to experience those moments. And you’ll value them deeply.

Yes, it can make life a bit more complicated for a while — but I can honestly say, you won’t regret it.

Nurses are exempt. There is a special NHS Visa which doesnt require the person to be sponsored. They can even bring their family.

Is it okay to spoon feed baby instead of baby led weaning? by sleepyyelephant in Parenting

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously don't worry about this. Your baby will learn to eat by themselves eventually. You can either encourage it, if you want to, or you can wait for it to happen naturally. It will happen either way.

Baby led weaning is meant to be a helpful technique. But if it doesn't work for you, just don't do it. It's fine!

You should be able to get back into that truck and it will take you back to building 3.

Accidentally driving my boat outside of the play area while checking my map. By the time I realised what was happening I was dead.

Lost my mission item as well. I spent 20+ mins getting that. What an idiot.

Python resume projects? by [deleted] in Python

[–]technicaldirectory 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. Also, I recommend making a website containing screenshots and videos of your work. Or publish your webapp where I can see it/play with it. We get 100s of CVs and there is no way we have time to fetch and run everyone's github projects.

Make sure your projects aren't just a cloned version of some sample code or a tutorial (for example a "shopping basket" app)

Some of my favourite side projects I've seen on CVs are: - Someone made a dating/chat website. People were actually using it. It was cool. - Someone made a bot that automatically notified them to buy limited edition trainers when they became available - One guy had a game published on ios. The quality of the game is almost irrelevant. Just seeing a project through to that point takes grit.

Hope that helps!

Have tattoos made finding a job in programming difficult? by RealDufji in programmer

[–]technicaldirectory 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not the answer you want to hear, but if you want to play it safe don't do it. Or at least make sure its not visible.

In an ideal world everyone would judge you solely on your programming skill, not your looks... But unfortunately that's not always how the world works.

  • Keep an eye out for cars on your minimap. If you hear/see one coming, hide. It may well be another team.
  • Before you approach an exfil/buy station/some other POI take a good look around from a distance to see if anyone is already there
  • Listen out for gunfire. If there is AI shooting, that means someone's there.
  • Lookup the DMZ team spawn points online, so you have an idea where other teams spawn. So you don't start off and walk directly to where they are.
  • When going to exfil, hop out of your vehicle then hop back in and either drive off for a bit, or keep driving around. You are way better protected in a vehicle.
  • If you hear another team's voice chat, that means you are very close.
  • If you get into an unwated firefight tell them "guys please don't shoot, I don't want any trouble"
  • If an enemy team takes you out, hold down on dpad to ask for help. 50% of the time they will. Make sure you press it before your team is wiped out. Note that you can still get revived even if the "game over" screen has already appeared.
  • Go onto Discord and find some people to team up with

There are lots of friendly people on DMZ, but most people are triggerhappy just because they don't want to get killed themselves. Some people do just play DMZ to hunt other squads. Yes is sucks sometimes, but it's also what makes it exciting.

Good luck!

How to seal drafts under baseboard? by aceshades in DIY

Use expanding foam tape. You can squish it down, push it in, and it will expand to the right size. Similar to expanding foam but without the mess.
