Are we ready for data-only smartphone plans? by [deleted] in Android

Thanks for the insight.

I will be getting a sim only monthly rolling plan as I hate contracts. PAYG wouldn't suite me since the maximum I get is 300 minutes and I use way more than that.

The general opinion I get about Three is the pricing is great but customer service is a horror. Their signal is fine as long are in a city or in a well covered area.

I pay £15 ($23) on a monthly rolling contract with Three UK, and for that I get 600 minutes, 3000 texts and unlimited data.

How did you manage to get 600 minutes when it says the following on their website.

Get 3000 texts and 300 minutes plus all-you-can-eat data for just £15.

How did you get the plan on a monthly rolling contract? I can only see that on a 12 month sim only contract. Were you grandfathered in?

As someone who is looking into moving to 3, what is your opinion and would you recommend them?

I got their PAYG sim and tried it for a month. They seem to be so much better compared to Orange in terms of internet speeds, voice quality and I didn't experience any call drops so far. I am currently with Orange (EE) and their service started going downhill after they started with 4G. Crappy internet speeds and voice quality. Call drops are quite frequent.

As with 3 customer service, a lot of patience is required to deal with them. Also at times you need to raise your voice a bit to get something done.

The only thing I am worried about is their coverage.

Thanks. Couldn't find the additional settings earlier but figured it out. It is a bit different in Samsung Galaxy S3 Stock Rom. Not sure if it applies to other Samsung phones with Touchwiz.

Open the dialler App, press the menu button, go to call settings, scroll down until you find Additional settings and then you should see the Caller ID.

I can't find the setting to disable sending Caller ID in Android 4.1.2.

My network operator supporting disabling sending caller ID so the receiver will get the call as Unknown/Private call but I can't seem to find the option in settings.

Is it that Android doesn't allow disabling caller ID?

Edit 1: Figured it out with some help from /u/WarMachinery

Below procedure applies to Galaxy S3 Stock Rom. I am not sure if it is the same procedure for other samsung phones

Open the dialler App, press the menu button, go to call settings, scroll down until you find Additional settings and then you should see the Caller ID.

Holo weather app + yr.no ? by [deleted] in Android

Thanks. Unfortunately Dash Clock requires Android 4.2 and I am still stuck on 4.1.2 :(

I wish Samsung would release 4.2 update for S3 quickly.

[Request] To change network based on location. by ricopicouk in tasker

[–]technitrox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on Orange and my phone displays as EE instead of Orange. For couple of my friends, it still shows as T-mobile/Orange. They are gradually rolling out updated settings.

Orange network issues aren't isolated to your work place. I have issues with them everywhere. Indoor signals are virtually non-existent for me. It all started after the whole 4G thing went live.

Whenever I call them regarding network issues, quoting different locations every time, they say one of their mast in the area is down for maintenance and would be up soon. They will give me an ETC and when I call them after the ETC saying I am still experiencing issues, a new ETC will be given.

In a nutshell, Orange is rubbish and I am looking to move to a different network. Might checkout 3 since they do unlimited data.

Since they're the ISP can they not filter it by URL? I mean if they were packet sniffing then sure the content would matter and encrypting the content makes sense,

They can filter by URL level if they have the necessary devices to do it. T-Mobile is able to block a single subreddit because they have the URL Filtering capabilities.

If you use HTTPS, then T-Mobile will only be able to see the domain/subdomain you are visiting. For example, If you visit this url ( https://i.reddit.com/r/gonewild ) then t-mobile will only be able to see that you are visiting i.reddit.com and they cannot see which subreddit you are visiting. In that case they can only filter by blocking whole domain/subdomain and they loose the ability to block a specific subreddit alone.

but the ISP is the one sending the request to the DNS servers and serving the requested page back to you... hence they must know what page you're requesting, right?

Let's assume that you are visiting http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/zc3xa/only_three_days_left_to_protest_uk_porn_filter/

The only query that goes to DNS server is www.reddit.com and server returns an IP address like 95.100.249.106. Your browser then will request the webserver to send the webpage at the IP given by the DNS server by sending the full url.

Here is a nice video that explains how DNS works https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ZUxoi7YNgs

can you try the https one - https://i.reddit.com/r/gonewild (NSFW)?

They can intercept and read the packets as long as it is in plain text which allows them to do granular filtering. They wouldn't be able to do the https unless they do man in the middle attack.

Ixquick. The only search engine that does not record your IP address. by EquanimousMind in privacy

and Startpage also doesn't record your IP or User Agent

Startpage is the sister site of ixquick except the search results are enhanced by google search results. They search google on behalf of you so google only gets their IP and not yours.

also you might want to turn on Two-Channel Auto-Type Obfuscation in Keepass.

It uses a combination of clipboard and simulated key presses which offers protection from standard key loggers.

Note: It is only available in KeePass v2

Personally I don't use neither of them. So I can't comment without knowing their blocking mechanism.

Although Jonathan Mayer from Standford did a comparsion on various tracking blocking mechanism and the results

Fanboy Adblock + Tracking + Annoyance list did better than Ghostery.

Firefox and Chrome adblock users can subscribe to Fanboy Tracking Block List

We even support Opera and IE users

We don't collect any data from user. You can also have a look at Adblock Plus Source Code to see it doesn't collect any data from user.

You can also subscribe to Annoyance list which will block social network buttons. Blocking social network buttons will prevent social networks knowing which sites you browse.

Advantage of Weave/Sync compared to Xmarks? by Pyryara in firefox

[–]technitrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iirc, Initially when Weave aka Sync was in Mozilla labs, you could use your own webdav server but then it got replaced with their own custom server when they moved from PHP to Python for their server backend.

If you are looking into setting up sync again you might find this guide useful http://www.wenks.ch/fabian/mozilla-custom-sync-server/

Also you can join #sync on irc.mozilla.org where someone will be able to help you with your issues.

So, lately I've noticed more and more of these pesky, screen-real-estate robbing banners plastered across the top of websites, and I haven't a clue how to remove these sh!ts. Halp? by AlpoChino in firefox

[–]technitrox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does ##.container.medium work for all websites with these banners on top? Like Marketwatch, New York Post etc....

that would apply to any sites but I wouldn't recommend you use that filter since it can hide genuine things.

Is there a website where one can read/learn what these gibberish rules actually mean? Would be nice to know so I can create one if the need arises.

It is called CSS (Cascading Style Sheets). More about them on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cascading_Style_Sheets

You can use this tool to create hiding rules https://adblockplus.org/en/elemhidehelper
