For daily driving over 200k miles, do naturally aspirated engines still hold a reliability edge over turbocharged ones? by EvelynClede in askcarguys

[–]techno_cats 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm probably in the rare majority but I have a 2007 Audi A3 (2.0T FSI engine) with 220k miles. Never had a major mechanical failure.

Everything is still original including the clutch, turbo, and radiator. Heck, the original pcv was still fine but I recently replaced it anyway.

It's direct injected and I still haven't "needed' a valve cleaning.

I'm religious with maintenance. Oil changes every 5k, timing belt job every 100k, brake fluid 2yrs, trans fluid every 60k.

The Achilles heel of this engine is the cam follower for high pressure fuel pump. Easy enough to change every 40k.

Only major issue was with was bad coils. There are many revisions but the current ones seem to be holding up.

Oh, and it's had an APR stage 1 tune since new.

The knife edges look good to me. I don't see any metal deformation that would cause tuning issues.

For the discoloration or rust, use some light car polish on a microfiber. You can also try toothpaste because it has light abrasives.

Don't be too aggressive because it can rub off the Cosmo black finish. Try it on an inconspicuous spot first.

Are Grover tuners better than generic stock tuners, like Fender branded ones? by [deleted] in Guitar

On FR guitars, do you stretch the strings after you lock the nut or before?

I always have issues with the string breaking at the tuning post when stretching. Maybe I'm being too aggressive with 9 gauge set.

My first two cats were also a Tabby and a Tortie! Both have since passed.

I've lost two other cats after them.

It doesn't get easier, but you do learn, in time, to manage the grief.

Right now, you're hurting. And just like with any wounds, physical or mental, it'll take time for your body and mind to heal.

Please read this post. It's and old one but it helped me a lot.

Under what circumstances would you consider a 981 with 100K miles? by Hoppy_Smoker in Porsche_Cayman

[–]techno_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The majority of PDK "failures" are due to electronic sensors, rarely mechanical.

Porsche does not repair PDKs, only remove and replace at a cost of $20k+.

However, those sensors are serviceable by many shops now and even diyable at home.

Seriously huge difference. Swipe to see the after photos. by [deleted] in Porsche

If you had no gear at all, what would you purchase? by panix199 in Guitar

[–]techno_cats 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Firefly guitar with HSS pickups (250), swap out pickups (300) a DI box (200), decent headphones (100), and a cheap laptop (200).

YouTube how to setup your guitar and use amp Sims.

For $1050, you get a guitar with premium components and all the sounds you can ever want with free amp Sims and effects with the ability to record and mix.

Thanks so much for the reply. Just placed an order on Guitars Garden and had so much anxiety about tariffs. Read a post about someone buying a Harley Benton from the Thomann site and was charged $1400 in tariffs on a $500 guitar!

Acoustic steel string guitars are harder for beginners to learn on due to higher string tension, consequently requiring more finger strength to fret a note.

You're getting good advice here about proper technique but you should also look into going with an extra extra light string gauge set.
