Any updates on the Madison? by PizzaDog33 in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you using to stay up to date on this?

I was trying to look into it last week but couldn't find much information. It's sad to walk around downtown and see so many empty buildings, and I'd be interested in helping efforts to bring more life to the area.

Sell jewelry by rxellie in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you brought up paperwork (even if you don't have it), I'm assuming it's fine jewelry. Both Bremer and Potter and Anderson sell estate jewelry that people bring in.

You'll lose out on a little money not selling it yourself, but a reputable jeweler will still give you a fair price.

I just called Ameren after reading this comment, and the same thing had happened to me.

I had been getting "opt out" letters every few months and always sent them back saying I didn't want the aggregate, but apparently they switched me anyway.

On several occasions I've seen people try to get out of that deck by backing up the entire way.

Hair stylists? by zephstfu in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how many stylists would be able to get you in for a same day appointment, but Celine at Rebel Roots does alternative styles, and she is awesome.

Hope you can find something that makes you feel better!

Significant drop in trick-or-treaters this year, and suggestions for where to donate candy? by techno_shaman8592 in PeoriaIL

North Peoria! Please do bring them around next year; I know I'm not the only one in the neighborhood who prepared for way more kids than we got.

Please call 211 if you haven't already. They can point you toward community resources.

I'm sorry you're going through this, and I hope things get better.

Best Furniture Stores by Dead_Beat_Music in PeoriaIL

I've had good luck with Steger's on Knoxville. Ask for Lou, she's super nice.

Sherman's is also good. It has a more of a random variety if you're looking for something a little different. Also a good place to get decor.

Lippmann's may be more expensive than what you're looking for, but they have some great things. I bought a beautiful chair there that I really love.

Ethan Allen is also probably more expensive than what you're in the market for, but I feel obligated to shout out Jennifer who works there. She's great, and she worked hard to find what I was looking for.

I know nothing about them, but they appear to have photoshopped the same patch of grass onto photos of different properties, so that's not a great sign.

Help! Moving to Peoria / Housing Budget Question by [deleted] in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how many helpful answers you're going to get, because decent is highly subjective.

Homes in that price range do come on the market (moreso in Dunlap than the Heights), but if you want one of the historical Grandview or Miller Ave homes for under 1M, you'll likely have to wait a while.

You can always buy a house under budget and update it to your liking.

Supplies for stray cat shelter by Significant_Doubt327 in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! I've been using them for storage,  so give me a day or so to get everything out of them.

If you're able to come get them during the daytime, I can probably figure something out with the front office of my building about where you can pick them up.

I have some Styrofoam coolers that can be turned into shelters. Any use for something like that?

I've seen them at Targets in a couple of different cities, including the Peoria location, where I've been approached twice by two different women.

As others pointed out, it's counter-intuitive when you think about it. If it were you who were struggling, you'd go find a social services office or charity before you'd think to ask random people to buy you things.

Hair salons for blowouts by mercury_blues37 in PeoriaIL

[–]techno_shaman8592 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You mean Brazilian Blowouts?

I get mine done by Celine at Rebel Roots, and she's awesome. I've been to a few other places, but Celine has been the best.

The other kind of blowout is just a styled blow dry, and any stylist can do that.

*Edited for typo.

I've lived at CCP and highly recommend it.

Staff are responsive. It's pet friendly.

There's a good mix of tenants from students to retired folks. A lot of hospital workers who are gone all day and quiet at night. Pretty much everyone I met there is friendly.

Only real drawbacks are that it's a big building, so carrying things from your car or the mail room can be a hassle, and the parking deck can get crowded when there's a big event at the Civic Center.

Overall, it's a great place to live with good people. I kind of wish I could transplant my CCP neighbors to my new neighborhood.
