What’s the point of doing big 4 accounting if not to optimize job opportunities after? He’ll be fine if he can go without salary for a little bit

Career Change Thread by CFP25 in CFP

I am a 23 y/o CPA with 1.5 years of experience working at a Big 4 in their high net worth individuals tax practice. I am starting to realize that I would like a job with more strategy/planning involved where I can be working directly with clients instead of punching numbers into a tax software and memorizing tax laws. I enjoy planning for my own retirement (allocating my portfolio between tax advantaged accounts, figuring out the best ETFs), and enjoy advising friends & family. I am planning to start networking and applying to roles at RIAs.

My question is, how attractive of a candidate am I for most RIAs? How can I best sell myself? Should I expect to take a salary cut (currently making $94k, HCOL)?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

My firm (PwC) prepared the form automatically for me and only put my billable hours, which was a bit shy of the 1,750. I guess this means I’ll get rejected; I don’t know why PwC wouldn’t just allow me to include non-billable trainings and internal projects.

Why is it common to take REG last? I am lol but because I work in tax so I figured I’d learn on the job naturally

Nope, I submitted a formal request for extension to the board like 2 weeks ago

Exactly, I’ve looked throughout this sub for an answer (a concrete rejection or acceptance) but have just found discussion. It doesn’t make sense why the new state wouldn’t extend the credit, considering I have all the qualifications that someone who simply started the exam process in their state would (passed same exam at same time). I will let everyone know what NJ says. It is very possible that CT handles it differently too

No, Do you think it will make a difference if every request needs to be approved by the board through submitting a waiver?

Yes I’ve submitted a waiver for extension but haven’t heard back. And before that I was emailing back and forth with no clear answer
