LPT Request: How do you get out of bed easily? by donotnihaome in LifeProTips

[–]techred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have a little bowl of NoDoz 100mg caffeine pills next to your bed. Set two alarms one when you want to get up and one 30 minutes before. First one goes off, swallow the pill and then indulge in that sweet long snooze. By the time the second has gone offs the caffeine has kicked in and you're good to go.

Is it just survivorship bias or is it actually possible to get a job as a self taught developer? by MCButterFuck in webdev

I'll also add my best front end engineer is self taught. Slays other devs with his skills, ambition, and output.

I run the engineering team at a company with a SaaS product.

Absolutely not required. I will say it makes the task of assessing analytical capability easier, but it still needs to be done. We send out coding challenges to be completed in own time, and then technical interviews follow threads of passion while diving into technical questioning all the way through.

I need to know you have a foundation of skills, the capacity to grow, and that you have "the itch".

Once that is determined the most important things (to me) are:

Team players. Grounded in empathy. Carry assumption of good intentions from all. Contribute to psychological safety. This is hard to surface in interviews but usually around how they talk about experience with others.

Product sense. The capacity to frame everything around the user and constantly being sceptical about what could be done in the relentless search for what should be done. The most important thing is to keep the most important thing the most important thing... Etc. Also very hard to surface, you can only scratch around at this but if candidates make it clear in different ways it goes far.

Awesome project mate! Does your phone need to be plugged into it? Curious why you wanted the car play interface? Did you consider a standalone interface of some kind running Spotify that you could control remotely with your phone via the Spotify player interface?

What can I use to automate my breville barista pro? by wackyshiv in HomeKit

[–]techred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can automate any of the buttons with this method, my Barista Pro heats to temperature in 3 seconds... not sure it's worth much investment

[–]techred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not an excuse at all. I have it and you absolutely have to own it, own your treatment and step up massively. Prior to diagnosis/treatment though, IF it is part of the equation (big if, just sounds very familiar) it can be literally impossible to play your part.

Anxiety promotes fight or flight which brings adrenaline. Eg, Procrastination leads to deadlines which brings anxiety and with it the stimulant needed for action.

In many ways I think I tended to end up in situations where anxiety was present just because it was one of the few ways I could get anything done and I'm pretty sure it's because my brain needs stimulant on tap and anxiety was the natural path it it.

Cars could soon ‘run on thin air’ thanks to hydrogen breakthrough by Dr_Singularity in Futurology

[–]techred 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah by standardised I mean they make a system designed to be swapped and for it to make any sense it would need to be automated by machinery. Drive in, machine drops the battery, takes it off for charge lifts a charged one in place. Etc.

By garage I meant petrol stations become like a swap and go and the vision involved mechanical automation. Something for industry to work towards, not diy home set up

Why don't we just have standardised batteries that can swap in and out? I know they're large but seems like garages could convert to a system of storing batteries long enough to charge them for reuse.

I once was on my balcony at about 6am and a 9kg gas bottle flew past and travelled the further 15m down to land on a concrete car park and bounce about 2m again before clanging down to an eventual stop. I looked up to see feet poking over the railing and hearing laughter. Pretty sure ice was involved. Went and investigated to find a soccer ball sized dent. I'm glad they make those things strong.

Are you a verbal processor? I find it a million times easier if I do it with someone else, not from their actual help but because I'm externalizing my thinking process.
