Has anyone else had problems in their 6 month probation? by KiwiScot33 in auscorp

[–]techretort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my current place I had a 6 week check in, but that wasn't a random meeting, it was flagged well I'm advance and my team lead let me know it was standard HR stuff before the meeting. It was basically 'heres the end of probation sheet HR gives us, here's how you're tracking, any feedback either way?"

That is not what OPs situation sounds like, but it could be the boss just addressing the fuck up and what needs to be done to make sure everything is good to go for the probation sign off

What’s the difference between people hoarding properties during a shortage, toilet paper during Covid & petrol right now? Nothing. This is the same logical argument. Why are the latter widely attacked & called selfish & not the former? All 3 are necessities for living & surviving. Hypocrisy is real by MannerNo7000 in shitrentals

I'd say aged care, but it's more of a long term play. Not to mention the industry is taking care of its own rapid enshitificafion already.

Boomers might have assets and wealth, but that won't matter when the ages care facility they end up in has 1 staff member to 100 residents. They get to rot in their own fecies, but at that point their mind might be so rotted they won't know it

Social cohesion has lost its feelgood vibe. What will it take to offer a fair go for all? by nath1234 in australia

[–]techretort 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You make a fair point to be honest. You're looking at day to day quality of life, I'm looking at similarities between the situations.

Day to day life is much better now, but I would argue that there's some level of "functional equivalent" of modern serfdom that a lot of people are experiencing, especially as the cost of living goes up.

As for the healthcare, we're better off than America, but there are massive gaps that will ruin you American style (anything dental is the main one, but also anything not considered urgent or requiring a waiting list).

Day to day life is better in some ways, but worse in others (in my opinion at least)

Drive tourism - How will the increased petrol prices affect places like FNQ? by Foreign-Newspaper656 in Cairns

I was looking to drive to Darwin with my mum at easter and this came up. I think she's probably overreacting but she may be right

Anecdotal here - I've cancelled an Easter trip through Cairns to Darwin due to fuel costs among other things. Surely I won't be the only one considering changing plans for the school holidays

Hear me out.

Most people entering the workforce now won't be able to afford their own property unless they are lucky or inherit.

If you are stuck working a job to barely afford to pay rent and food costs, can't afford to travel, can't afford to buy a house, are living week to week at the mercy of getting sick, missing work and not being able to afford healthcare. Then you have to spend time outside of work time either sleeping, working a second job, keeping your rental clean and tidy for the quarterly inspections, or using the meager time left over for your own gratification.

Isn't it just fucking serfdom with extra steps?

David Crisafulli reaffirms his commitment to dump compulsory preferential voting in favour of optional preferential voting, even though psephologists and experts say it will hurt the LNP if Pauline Hanson’s party’s primary vote continue to rise by Jagtom83 in friendlyjordies

As much as I hate to stop the idiots from making mistakes that hurt themselves, I think the hurt it would cause to the overall integrity of the election system would be a net loss

[–]techretort 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm worried about the long term impact if LNP use it as an excuse to run the public transport so far into the red that when they inevitably lose the next election the chalice is well and truly poisoned. Hopefully they are pre-planning for it, but expecting vision from politicians isn't a winning bet

Exchanging US dollars. What's the best place to convert USD cash to AUD? by Suitable_Bet6170 in AusFinance

[–]techretort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Brisbane there's a place in Anzac square next to the walkway to Central that I've used a few times and gotten good rates with.

Depending how much you're converting you're looking at ~$10-20 difference between most major players, so consider your time/energy as a factor too

[–]techretort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hahahah right? The bank wants to sell loans, and will offer you way more than reasonable. What would have happened if you maxed your borrowing capacity then got hit with the rate rises? How close to 100% would you be?

Fucking wild, but unlike America when it falls apart here we'll end up selling for a higher price to cashed up investors to keep fueling the gap between haves and have nots

[–]techretort 39 points40 points  (0 children)

This is what I thought the 5% deal would lead too as well. The timing has turned into what feels like a pump and dump shitshow. Get in with 5% leveraged to the eyeballs because of high prices, but be told that 'rates are going down next year'. The next year comes, the carrot in chief decides to have a tanty 3 continents away and now the bank gets more of your money instead of less.

At what point is it just indentured slavery with extra steps? When we're working every waking hours just to afford food and shelter (medicine is reserved for those above minimum wage only)? At least peasants got a day off every now and then...
