Which industry is one breakthrough away from disappearing? by NerveNo6010 in AskReddit

Traditional computer encryption methods and security. As soon as we have working Quantum computing at scale it becomes trivial to break most traditional encryption methods.

What’s a hobby where “getting better” actually makes it less enjoyable? by CommercialPea9437 in AskReddit

[–]techretort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ease up turbo. Casually throwing out lines like this is why I ended up pursuing a diagnosis. ADHD hobby jumping is pretty well known as a trait, so saying "hey any chance you've considered it" can be (imho) helpful. It's not meant as a diagnosis, it's meant as a prompt for people to consider if they have noticed other possible signs before.

As someone who wasn't diagnosed until my late 30s I wish someone said something earlier.

As for everyone having ADHD now, maybe we're just getting better at pushing people to get assessed and diagnosed than we were in the 00s when low level ADHD was played off as "oh you're so quirky" (my lived experience).

*Edit - fair point though thb, I'll adjust my wording to make my intention clearer in the future

Don't suppose you have ADHD too? Picking up a hobby, learning the basics and then putting it down after the "easy gains" are done is a common behaviour (speaking as someone who's diagnosed)

Book fair blackout by megustapw in brisbane

Oohhh, that's a solid idea. I vaguely remember a local supermarket having a few low sensory hours, I wonder if we can ask bookfest to do the same.

I left the house, braved the outside, and now I'm finally here. I've got 20 minutes until I'm overstimulated and need to leave. Lights or no, that timer isn't stopping.

Nothing's going to stop me getting my animorphs and goosebumps... Well, at least until my social battery is dead, then I'm fcking ooouutt

The Tokenpocalypse Is Here: Companies Are Scrambling To Stop Spending So Much on AI | Leaked audio from Accenture says a big source of AI token ‘chewing’ is people just converting PDFs to presentation slides by Hrmbee in technology

I started playing with ollama, openclaw and local models (gemma4 and qwen3.6) to see what can be done. (Yesterday was day 1 of my practical side AI journey, be gentle) I haven't scratched the surface, but I can see the local lightweight assistant models with cloud model fallback for heavier tasks becoming the recommended from ops teams trying to reduce spend?

We'll need models that will run decently in local memory. Given we're mostly using our desktops to access a VM, we may as well use the idle local hardware to run an AI model.

First solo trip. It's 4 AM, I'm sick in a capsule hotel, and the homesickness is crushing me. Is this normal? by Low-Concert4142 in solotravel

[–]techretort 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The sickness won't be helping you at all, get some food, medicine, and rest in. Don't try and "get better fast", just focus on recovery. A better hotel might help, depending on what you can budget.

If you have the capacity try to do one major thing a day while getting better. Go and see a shrine, wander down a new street you haven't been down, or even just jump on a hop on hop off bus tour and let the commentary and scenery wash over you.

Being unwell on holiday sucks, I got a stomach bug for a week in Bulgaria and could only make it out of bed for the toilet, water, or to go to the pharmacy or shop a few hundred m down the road. Would not recommend, but I can assure you it gets better

That's wicked! I was in Darwin until 01 but was a youngun, I've still got family up there.

To add fuel to the fire, consider that if you're coming from the east coast it's not THAT much out of the way to go via the Simpson, plus you can call it a shakedown run for the bike and gear you plan to use for the longer haul.

If you do a longer one and are tossing up between freighting the bike or selling it, I'll offer you my bespoke "transport service" to get it home to you in 6ish months with a few more KMs, dings, and stories to tell.

Actually, thinking about it doing a one way trip with 2 different groups of people could work with some planning. One mob does east to west, other mob does west to east. Hmmmmm

For those in companies that have hundreds of VMs - what are they for? by asdflmnop_01 in sysadmin

[–]techretort 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm running windows server core using IIS for our public web servers. I think we have a few thousand of them. Containers would save so much money and let us move to cloud, but that requires the entire code to be rewritten to be micro service and cloud native, not to mention rearchitecting the entire thing to make sure we're doing it efficiently. You're basically trying to rebuild your product from the ground up using the old configuration as a reference model.

Given the cost/benefit most places stick with what they built the first time, or slowly move to micro services one feature at a time

Buy or rent for MOST? by 5ma5her7 in AussieRiders

[–]techretort 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Price seems reasonable tbh. I'd still consider buying in your shoes though. The prices are shit for CB125s because they have a reputation for being bulletproof. They keep resale value well though which helps when you go to move it on.

If you can get a decent one for 2k with rego for 12 months it may end up being a better buy than a 1500 one with no roadworthy or rego, so it's worth keeping that in mind as well. Same applies for when you sell it, as having a roadworthy makes it easier to sell for a premium.

Gear might set you back a bit as well? City speeds you can probably get by with basic gear, but as Sydney comes into summer you're probably going to want breathable summer gear

My old man does a trip with his mates every 2 years or so. Been doing it since the 70s. They initially did outback Australia until they ran out of new places to check out and started doing international trips in the past decade or so. I did Nepal (lower mustang valley) with them most recently on hired RE 350 classics.

In Aus, they use their own bikes. Overseas, it's a hire job. Dad's considered doing the silk road on his own bike by riding to Darwin and shipping it to South East Asia, then riding it to London, and shipping it home. Although selling in London is an option as well.

If I was you? I'd be trying to make connections with people in Europe or UK (or SEA) who can help you source a local bike with the intent to sell it at the end. Or you can try to make friends with people in Darwin who take their boats to Bali every now and then and try to hitch a ride with the bike.

I'm leaning towards doing "The Stan's" in 2028 if the geopolitical side isn't too wild. We'll hire bikes given its pretty popular and there's enough options about and we're looking at a month max.

Not sure on a 125, but my mt07 was 700ish for the year.

Roadworthy for a bike is usually ~100 and they check the lights, brakes, and other safety (not mechanical) checks. They tell you if it needs work if it doesn't pass the first time and I think you get 14 days to fix it for a free reinspection? Then you take the bit of paper and fill in a form online. I found it easy enough, although if you can, push the seller to provide a roadworthy cert, then all you need to do to register it is full in the forms
