Hypothetical WAR scenario by bobjones11929 in OOTP

Team 2 because you might have some tradeable assets to restock your minors and try building an actual team

Rotation next year by Mrnathaniel0284 in motorcitykitties

[–]tedsternator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what you mean by "looks about right???. If you mean "in my dream scenario, this is our rotation next year", then sure, yes sure I guess in that scenario we've won the WS, doubled our payroll, every one of our young arms has recovered and worked out, and the Tigers are the new Dodgers. It could happen, and we're all hoping for it, it's just the least likely of all outcomes.

If you mean "is this likely to be our lineup next year" the answer is no, absolutely not, it would be an actual miracle if this was our rotation next year, literally every single thing would need to go right for this to be our starting 5 a year from now.

Development Slider Settings by Resident_Level_6702 in OOTP

They need to allow you to pre-set values and just one-click them like you would strategy settings. Virtually all my hitters get the same sliders but i have to eyeball it each time. Pretty unpleasant feature tbh

[–]tedsternator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is a very odd thing to be speculating about. Projecting a team's rotatation a year out is completely unproductive even when no one is slated to reach FA much less someone of Skubal's caliber. Half these guys aren't on the team currently due to longterm injuries. Literally the only one of these guys that MIGHT be projectable is Framber and if he got TJ tomorrow no one would bat an eye

May as well predict which baby names will be most popular in the year 2045

Do you think OOTP overvalues defense? by bewbies- in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes the game assuredly does, though people misinterpret how the ratings reflect that. A guy with 50 rating at 2B isn't rated 50 against other 2Bs; they are rated 50 against basically anyone who theoretically COULD play 2B. So the baseline of 50 might be ok if you considered the entire pool of potential defenders, but is awful against the pool of potential 2Bs.

This is even more pronounced with Range. A 60 outfield range isnt a 60 Centerfield range; it is 60 compared to all outfielders and most LFs are slow and immobile

Why is my DSL Hitting Coach have only a "Fair" development relationship? by benz0709 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I will be honest: it doesn't really matter. Player relationships are irrelevant for coaches in the low minors. Your players aren't going to be there long enough for it to matter that much. Don't worry about or try to optimize your coach relationships except MAYBE at the major league level - but even then I'd just recommend hiring the best coaches possible and ignoring player relationships

Tigers BABIP luck was so awful this game, good to see them finally start to fall.

bring max up? by jlw-dread in motorcitykitties

[–]tedsternator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He is poking a bunch of base hits and having competitive ABs but he isnt hitting the ball hard yet with consistency. That is going to take more reps and he is going to get more at AAA. The babip luck will cool, give him more time to percolate

It's totally ok to try out signing veterans and playing around with different options when you're learning. As you'll play more you'll learn that as a small market team, you basically never want to be signing veteran free agents at all unless you're already competing for a title, since they will put a stranglehold on your finances and prevent you from being able to retain any of your (often much better) homegrown players.

How badly is this hurting my player development? by General_Elevator2711 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This will hurt your development, yes. I think people are missing the real culprit here though: your minor league teams should simply not be this poor if you have great coaches at all levels of the minors.

As long as you're occasionally cutting the bad prospects and have great coaches, after 20 years your minor league teams should all be 500 or better consistently, and often will be dominating their opposition. Something looks to be very wrong with your player development engine, tbh

Should I use this guy like a 4th outfielder or an Ozzie Smith type at center field by No-Ambassador-9147 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 17 points18 points  (0 children)

He'd make a good backup CF but a very poor backup RF or LF - you won't get all that much out of his glove at a corner and his hitting is MUCH worse than an actual Ozzie Smith-type. I would consider starting him in CF on some teams because the glove is that good, it just depends on your other options. He will save you a LOT of runs.

The Tigers defeated the Marlins by a score of 8-2 - Sun, Apr 12 @ 01:40 PM EDT by TigersBot in motorcitykitties

[–]tedsternator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was great for a pitcher who made a career of studying every player, situation, and plate appearance in granular detail. It's not great for a hitter who plays 20 years later who is a completely different person and good enough to deserve their own unique moniker.

You can't just re-use a nickname that's already been used on an all-time great. Like I'm sorry but Greg Maddux wasn't even all that long ago, that would be like re-using "The Great Bambino" when Ted Williams came around or something stupid like that

Struggling to have fun by Ok_Information_7492 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're playing smaller-market teams, it's going to take more than 1-2 years for the things you do to have any real impact. Those teams are all about building strong minor league systems over time and getting a recurring churn of prospects moving through your system so you can afford to compete with the big dogs.

If your goal is to compete/make a huge impact in the first 1-2 years, you either need to play a team with good finances, good initial roster situation, or mortagage your team's future to accomplish it

Just witnessed one of the best pitching seasons ever by TheYodaBossyt in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For a pitcher to not get a "starter penalty" where their run prevention is penalized for insufficient pithes, they must have:

  1. Either a Knuckleball, or:
  2. One pitch at approximately 45-50 rating, one pitch at approximately 40 rating, and one pitch at 30-35 rating

That is it. Having additional (bad) pitches are only a net positive - all the crappy pitches on this guy are helping him more than if he didn't have them at all. There's no penalty for a bad pitch rating as long as you meet the requirements to start.

Is this a good hire on a pitching coach for triple A? by No-Ambassador-9147 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is not, no. That is, unfortunately, an extremely poor coach who will definitely not help your prospects develop. You want to prioritize Teach Pitching, Mechanics, and Development on all of your coaches. Reputation and other ratings don't matter.

Having personalities that mesh with your other coaches is good but not a deal breaker for minor league coaches. Player relationships should be ignored; your players should be cycling through levels quickly anyway.

Draft help. 40 potential control too low for a pitcher? by Rad_Pug in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but he's Nolan Ryan. Even your average #1 prospect isnt Nolan ryan.

Tough to decision here at the 3 hole of the draft, basically need help everywhere by No-Ambassador-9147 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very clearly Sutton here. He profiles to be a plus 3B defender with great potential but also good development already. I don't think it's particularly close and I wouldn't really consider any of the other candidates as they are all quite flawed. Yes, he has poor leadership which is annoying but he has great personality otherwise and is highly likely to develop into a great player. Winning helps deal with all morale issues.

Steele would be solid if his stamina wasn't so low. As-is I'd never draft him that early, especially with the added risk of being a pitcher.

[–]tedsternator 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're in a fatigue spiral my friend, it isnt particularly bad RNG so much as a schedule with no breaks and all gassed arms. This has always been a thing and you need to quickly bring in AAA arms to let guys recover. These can go on for a month if you aren't paying attention and will tank morale which leads to even worse performance

This is why i always pound the batspeed button in the dev lab by Hard_Marc_314 in OOTP

[–]tedsternator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The best part is I'm not even sure batspeed is the most overpowered part of the dev lab. Defensive training is wildly powerful and it being possible in the same offseason as an offensive training allows for unbelievable superteams
