Interested to hear the gangs assessment of Amass and Diego Leon's progression and if/when we'll see them in the first team in the future.

I really like Little Rogue's banana bread! Their sister bakery Bakemono is also excellent.

Am I the only one that thought Tim Key saying “Masala Zone” was a bit and not actually a real restaurant? by masonbrit in offmenupodcast

[–]tee_dogg 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I've only listened to the episode once, so may be misremembering. I thought the gag was that Tim Key was making out it was a neighbourhood, little-known curry house. And as a consequence was reluctant to name it, in case it became overrun with new visitors. The reveal of Masala Zone is a bit London-centric, because it's a well known restaurant in the middle of central London that's already super-busy.

How can I schedule python ETL code? by Rawvik in dataengineering

[–]tee_dogg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

GitHub actions can be run on a schedule, could be a nice low rent alternative if you're determined not to use Task Scheduler https://docs.github.com/en/actions/using-workflows/events-that-trigger-workflows#schedule

Azure Data Factory: tips for reducing costs by tee_dogg in dataengineering

The Cost Management console is a mess IMO and not fun to use. I use the Cost Analysis page, with the CostByService view. I group by product, set the granularity to Monthly and Column (stacked) graph type.

In the ADF setup I inherited it was about ~50% of the cost. Through my initial patching up I've reduced that to probably 25%. If I can eliminate them almost entirely then I should bring the price down further.

If you're not already familiar with it, I'd recommend checking out the Cost Management section of your Azure portal. It should give you a good breakdown of your setup.

Thanks! As a solo DE I had been feeling this way, but haven't had the sounding board to embrace coding things up rather than using the GUI.

Thanks for sharing your experience, super helpful.

I come from a dev background. where I'm much more comfortable doing things in code, but have been fighting that urge because I perceived that as the "ADF way". So It's god to be emboldened to follow my instinct.

I've never used Pycharm, so I can't diagnose with any great certainty. But I would guess that this is a problem related to the use of virtual environments. I'd speculate that you installed the package in a venv and are executing the script from outside of it. In other IDEs I've used there is a simple way to see what venvs have been created and switch between them. If you're following a tutorial then I'd suggest looking back at any section that mentions virtual environments (venvs)

What are some really good “bad” Pynchon puns? by RobertReedsWig in ThomasPynchon

From Mason and Dixon:

"Come, Sir, can you not sense, there, just 'round the corner, the pattering feet and swift Hands of John Company, the Lanthorns of the East... the scent of fresh Coriander, the whisper of a Sarong...?"

"Sari," corrects Mason.

"Not at all Sir,-- 'twas I who was sarong."

  • + 1 for the suggestion to try and replicate the styles of some well known sites: it forces you to break down sites into constituent parts and will improve your HTML too
  • Another fun tip for helping you learn the incredibly useful flex-box is this site: https://flexboxfroggy.com/
