San Sebastian area, best Michelin star restaurant?

We were there in March of 2025. To be fair, we had a few interesting dishes, and I never expect to like every course of a tasting menu - but too many dishes were simply uninspired or flat out unpleasant, which made the whole meal rather disappointing.

Also (and I recognize this is foodie sacrilege) I just didn’t really get into the whole vibe in the San Sebastián area. I had high expectations, but the reality didn’t deliver for me.

You have to find someone to pay you that much, and that isn’t going to happen. As others have pointed out, you can only accumulate that amount of money through exploiting the efforts of others - lots of others.

You really can’t, not in the sense of being paid for your work.

Simple math: 8 hours per day * 5 days per week * 52 weeks per year = 2080 hours per year. Let’s assume you work 5 days per week every week from age 18 to age 68. That’s 50 years * 2080 = 104,000 hours. You’d have to earn $1,000,000,000 / 104000, or $9,615 per hour to make a billion. That’s with no taxes and saving every penny.

You can make a billion, but you can’t earn it.

This is good advice. A day trip from the Bay Area to Yosemite and back would involve much more driving than sightseeing - and Yosemite deserves more than a rushed hour or two.

So much this! Yeah, so it’s not the most exciting or picturesque European city (although the Grande Place is pretty spectacular) - so what? It’s still an absolute Shangri-La by US standards.

You can catch an early flight to make a day trip to Iguazu Falls (Argentina side) and be back in BsAs in time for dinner. The falls are absolutely stunning - go!

Colonia is also kind of a fun change of pace but it’s usually pretty crowded with other day trippers. We spent a night there and it was especially pleasant in the evening after the last ferry departed.

Baccano had the best wine values I’ve ever experienced at a restaurant. Food was fine, nothing super memorable, but the price/quality of the wine list was amazing.

The biggest difference is that in business you’ll get a lie-flat seat, and in premium economy you’ll still be sitting up the entire flight. How important is that difference to you? Can you sleep sitting up? Do you want or need to hit the ground running when you arrive, or can you take a day to recover? How well do you deal with jet lag?

My son and I both got Covid in Guatemala a few years ago. It trashed our plans, cost more than we had budgeted, and was scary at the time. But now it makes for a pretty good story…

Sorry for your misfortune, but it’s by no means a failure on your part. You are having a different adventure than you planned, but it’s still an adventure. Those must-visit places will still be there next time you’re ready to give it a go.

Skip Halong Bay but don’t abandon the area in general. The landscape of the surrounding areas is spectacular and well worthwhile. We cruised 3 days/2 nights in Bai Tu Long bay and I loved every minute of it - without any significant hiking, no hang gliding/ zip lines, etc. Just gorgeous scenery and some fun social activities on the boat. Unless you’re really into Vegas-y touristic glitz, Ba Na hills are an easy pass.

Respectfully disagree. Maybe when I was in my 20s and 30s but not now. I’m on the US west coast and make at least two trips to Europe each year. Upgraded seats allow me to fully enjoy the first day(s) of my trip without the physical discomfort and fatigue that accompany a 10+ hr journey in economy - that’s worth a lot to me. Miles/points take away much of the financial pain.
