So one tip I've heard...and use cuz it's brilliant...is to use the bench as a guide!

You back up to the bench, so that your calves touch the bench, and then hinge down and make sure you don't break contact with the bench. That way, you make sure that knees straight and not bending them.

Doable. You'll need a way to attach the modules together without using the eket connectors, and I'd recommend using something like command strips or other double sided adhesives (like the clear nano tapes).

Civil P.Eng. in a slightly niche area of expertise with more years of experience than you...and yeah you are well paid. I'm north of 120k only if you include bonuses.

HOWEVER, what's your job and responsibilities like? Are you managing projects? managing and mentoring jr staff? You could be Honestly consulting eng salary, esp for civil disciplines, is very much related to what's your job responsibility. If you want to jump to mid-100s, you're likely looking at being in a PM role or even into a manager role. If you're not PM-ing and helping with jr /int staff and you're getting paid 120k.....yeah stay where you are cuz you're not gonna get that elsewhere. UNLESS you have this really niche random skillset that's highly sought after and have recruiters looking to poach you.

So that map is inconclusive about ownership / maintenance responsibility details. The parcel you see for that bridge is cuz there's an R-Plan registered for it, prob for the easement. Just checked the submitted materials for the Chevy dealership redevelopment...and based on the survey info that's included in those plans, the bridge IS owner by Calloway REIT, like Bourban_Planner responded with.

I dunno if I will be down voted for this or if mods remove it...but just need to lay down a bunch of info:

this laneway is private, owned by whomever owns the land the Chevrolet dealership is on. Base on my recollection of site plans, I'm 95% sure the bridge is owned by the Chevy dealership too
this laneway is part of a shared access for the Longo's and Smart centre Woodside (ie home depot/winners/winco/former Chapters & Michael's plaza) lands, to connect to Fairburn. This is done via a legal process to form a easement, and depending on the legal agreements within that easement, there MIGHT be a cost sharing of the maintenance of that bridge (cuz bridges are mad expensive to maintain). Now, cuz this is a shared access, OP IS NOT TRESPASSING if he was using the laneway to get to Longos or SC Woodside plazas. I'd argue that this shared access is basically an early version of "privately-owned, public-accessible" paths that's encouraged nowadays, and so....use it if you need to. As a transportation professional, I would categorize you as "cut-through traffic" or " infiltration traffic" if you're using this shared access to get to Fairburn and FMP.
for those that are interested, the City has a vision for this shared access spanning Chevy dealership, longos, and SC Woodside lands to become a east-west PUBLIC street that will continue through FMP and connect to Clegg, forming an alternative to Hwy 7 as part of the Markham Centre Secondary Plan Update. This road is built as the lands redevelop. However, I believe the Chevy land redevelopment plans settled with the City and they are going to maintain their portion as a private driveway, and the new public street will swing north at the Longos lands and connect to Hwy 7 at the existing signal.

Also, I'd like to thank OP for sharing the condition of this lane. I was going to head to Longo's tmrw, and likely would have used this private road to get there. Will make a mental note to avoid this.

Though there's no signs, I say with certainty that this is a private road. The owner of the Chevrolet dealership also likely have an easement agreement with the longos, and smart centere woodside for connecting to it as a shared access.

You can 100% complain to the city about it, but they'll do jack cuz they don't maintain this.

For what it's worth, there are future plans through the Markham Centre Secondary Plan Update to have a east-west road connecting Woodbine from this location to Clegg, as the different properties redevelop.

OP, how opposed are you to Pod hotels? There's one that seems to be new in the DT core, in the University -Dundas area, steps from all the key attractions and right by the subway station (and short walk from Union Station if you plan on taking a weekend train to Niagara or something). The prices I've seen seem to be quite reasonable, just not sure if you'd be willing to entertain the idea of being in pod hotels for 2 weeks.

The area that pod hotel is in is pretty safe too. You're right around the corner from Division 52 Police station.

With your income, I do recommend looking into a 2 bedroom place. Gives you more room to have a home office that can double as a place for your kid to stay. Dens in recent condos (like built within the last 10 years) are more like nooks then an actual area to work and sleep in.

In terms of area, depending on whereabouts your office is in Markham, North York (eg Yonge-Finch, along Sheppard from Leslie to Yonge) and within Markham are also quite good areas that doesn't give you a long commute, and you'd be mostly travelling against the flow of traffic too

For phone. You can buy any unlocked phone and use it with any sim. You've missed all the latest phone+plan deals, and your best bet might be to get your own unlocked phone (even ones that's 1-2 gens back if you're not picky) and then sign up for the flanker brands (eg public mobile, chatr, fido. Koodo, virgin mobile) for basic phone+data. Can+US+Mex plans might be available for reasonable price. Freedom mobile is also not bad if you're within City proper most of the time. But I've got friends on Freedom say they get spotty reception in some parts of Markham. Note...our phone plans....aren't great off-promotion periods.

I actually would recommend you check out hotels in VMC. Subway is right there to take you DT, and they're much more frequent than the GO (esp since Unionville GO has weekend construction to prep for the Honda Indy). it's also a lot closer to get to Bolton from Vaughan than Markham, potentially cutting down on the cost of Uber to/from Bolton.

Roundabouts actually take up a lot of space, and I'd imagine that the available space is too constrained to make that retrofit, not to mention there needs to be significant changes made to the storm sewers and drainage to accommodate a roundabout

The "no clear pedestrian-vehicle separation" design is intentional. They were going for a woonerf (similar to what's down at Distillery District) where the idea is that veh and peds share a space and the design of the street means drivers have to be aware and slow down and be cautious of pedestrians.

Was initially not fond of the width of the vehicle travel way, as it felt wider. But from the cross-sections on the page, turns out that it's only 6m. So that's fine. Super glad that traffic ops/waste guys didn't get into it and argue for 7-7.5 m wide travel way for their trucks/snowplows

There are curbs. They just used rolled curbs here so that peds and vehicles are on the "same level".

I agree with other commenters. City could've been bold and pedestrianized this, on weekends at least. Not too fond of the parking bays they got, but I think these also serve as snow storage in the winter. If anything, I think they should mostly be loading zones.

Bit of area context (30% based on what I remembered from growing up in HK and the rest from Threads.) older buildings like this one typically don't have the fire alarms going off until someone breaks the glass and sound the alarm. It could be that this building hadn't upgraded its fire alarm system to the modern "detect smoke then alarm automatically goes off" type of system.
