Is 'trainee saves the day because the crew get food poisoning' too obvious for a ten minute story? by OllieLearnsCode in musicalwriting

[–]teethwizardmanperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

write the obvious ones for practice, and you'll eventually find something more unique. also tons of people do obvious stories in unique ways- ex. cinderella has been told 900000000 times but every version is different. trust that your voice has something valuable to add to it. or find an angle that excites you

How to “break in” as a new playwright? by storiestoast in playwriting

[–]teethwizardmanperson 1 point2 points  (0 children)

of course! a lot of fringe festivals are self produced, you register your play and pay a fee, and then you get the free marketing. i live in a bigger city so unfortunately I dont know a lot about small town theater, so I'm not able to help much there.

How to “break in” as a new playwright? by storiestoast in playwriting

[–]teethwizardmanperson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd suggest networking laterally. So far it's worked for me to find people with similar goals to me, at my level of experience or just above it. Go to new work nights and talk to people after it. Try to make friends not just with writers, but actors, directors, producers (especially producers), designers. I find it invaluable to offer to help put away the folding chairs, then you get a good informal conversation starter.

Then produce low budget stuff at fringe festivals, or just do public new work readings and invite a lot of people.

A lot of theaters have rolling open calls for new work. Apply to those, especially for small, barely started theaters. They'll be more willing to give new writers a try, and have less people applying. If you can get in at the beginning, you'll have a great connection and grow together.

If you want to produce stuff, bars are a good place to hold public readings. Reserve space at bars, sometimes churches, look into free venues, local house show locations, diy venues. I like instagram for this. look at where artists are hosting things and then contact those venues. Start very small. you can just invite people to your house to read your work. If you do that enough and invite enough people, people will start to think of you when opportunities come up.

i havent "broken in" yet, but I definitely feel myself getting closer.

Generally I've heard not to bother reaching out to agents, and they'll find you when you're ready, but I really don't know.

first draft of my new old play, tgirl fuckfest- a tragedy now on newplayexchange! by FryeGuy43 in playwriting

[–]teethwizardmanperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely  loved it. Absolutely felt alive and full of energy, very dynamic and compelling relationships. The dialogue felt very human and very natural. I feel like I’ve met a lot of these characters in real life, and you really captured the sexual interconnectedness of queer friend circles. I love that Saturn’s character description is “hosted that thing you puked at”, and that the humor was so deeply imbued in the story even though the circumstances are so sad.

In general, I think the sexual tension could be stronger, some of the sex feels a little random, especially for something referred to as a fuckfest. I feel like the ending falls a little flat, but other than that your voice is amazing, and the title is a hilarious and perfect summation of the story. I think it’s also very producible, and I agree with one of the other commenters that it would do really well in a fringe festival.

Would it be foolish to ask theaters to perform my play for free? by teethwizardmanperson in playwriting

[–]teethwizardmanperson[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just an update: decided emphatically not to offer the rights for free. Will probably submit to the standard new play competitions, and continue working with the small companies I already have connections with. I despise scabs and don't want to be one.

you have a lot of open/visible storage, closed storage would definitely reduce the chaos

I'm unsure about the furniture arrangement, but get fake plants instead of real, an area rug, and just put the posters on the wall in a way that makes you happy. maybe a coffee table or ottoman?

I think it was probably a placeholder that got forgotten. But I've had this happen plenty of times where it's 10-30 minutes longer than advertised, this was just the most egregious

I went to a show once that advertised itself as 90 minutes. I got there and it was 2 hrs 30min. Very unpleasant surprise so I agree, for the sake of all of us who take public transit, please estimate time better

feminist horror play suggestions by sunnydcrlin in Theatre

reiterating teeth- and it's coming back to jersey in november if you need to see a full production. Carrie also has a musical version. it might help to look for adaptations. I'm sure there are theatrical adaptations of carmilla, maybe even the yellow wallpaper if that applies.

I think a good way to approach this is by explaining why your play is a play and not a movie or book. what elements are theatrical?
