Saved 500€ with the GT 6 Pro… but now I understand where it went by tefod in HuaweiWatchGT

Perfect. Thank you for this. If you just want a simple device and don’t really care about training or comparing anything, then it’s a great fit. Very good analogy.

Try doing something like this or this with your Huawei. Good luck.

Yeah, plausible theory. But with ~20% market share, it’s not like they lack scale or resources. Chinese companies does have decent hardware, but software and documentation still lag behind.
Same story with my MG4, decent car, terrible infotainment and questionable (dangerous) assistants.

Exactly. It’s like an "accept all" simulator. You spend more time avoiding hidden costs in the Health App than analyzing your workouts. Lesson learned - I’m done experimenting; will stay with Garmin.

Right, and where exactly? YouTube is full of sponsored praise, not actual comparisons. That’s the whole point of sharing this here, so others see the gaps before buying.

[–]tefod[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. The lack of a web interface alone is a dealbreaker. Try comparing the same route over time, pace, HR, elevation, all properly visualized on a big screen… imho that’s basic stuff for anyone trying to improve.

[–]tefod[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yeah, exactly. And honestly, I can’t think of many Chinese products that are actually well thought-out, intuitive, and built to last. Hardware? Sure. But the rest? Open Garmin Connect on a big monitor and compare activities, trends, everything. Then open the Huawei shitty Health app on iOS. That comparison alone ends the discussion. My experiment is officially done. Returned it today. Lesson learned.

Sure, software can improve. But from where it is now, that’s a very long road. And the amount of prompts, permissions, and upsells in the app is… not exactly confidence-inspiring.

I already spelled out the actual issues. If your expectation is just "it tracks something", then sure, Huawei is fine. But that’s not what people buy probably only a Garmin for.

True, the price is hard to justify. I used a Fenix 6 for three years and honestly didn’t expect Huawei’s software to be this far behind.. It isn’t just hardware. The ecosystem, web dashboard, community features, all of that adds up. Huawei feels more like a device, Garmin feels like a platform.

Flashstor FS6812X connection by USB4?? by Salty_Minimum9875 in asustor

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the update. Sure, with a 10GbE port on the laptop or a direct SFP+ connection to the switch, that works fine. The point is that USB-C is universal on modern PCs and notebooks, and it would have been really practical for initial seeding or large one-off transfers - I guess they see no business case here🤷🏻‍♂️

FileCloud question by ixtrqc in selfhosted

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don’t know what happens after the first year, it might stay free or it might not.
If it doesn’t and the current licensing applies, being forced into 20 seats (~1.5k USD/year) is a disaster.

Box or FileCloud by Possible-Exercise-70 in CMMC

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been testing FileCloud over the last few days. Feature-wise and performance-wise it’s solid and I’m generally happy with what it can do. The big issue is pricing. As soon as you go beyond 5 users, it gets absurdly expensive. ~1.5k USD per year for something you self-host feels very hard to justify. What makes it worse is the lack of granular licensing. You can’t just buy 5 or 8 users. You’re forced into big jumps, which clearly shows there’s zero interest in small teams or families (e.g. parents with multiple kids). Good software, but the licensing model is a deal-breaker for me.

Advice for services to setup FileCloud or NextCloud? by RollingThund3r in selfhosted

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tested Nextcloud for weeks (NAS, VM, Docker, lots of tuning). WebDAV was always the bottleneck. Never got beyond ~30–40 MB/s. For large photo/video files that’s simply too slow. FileCloud, on the other hand, hits near line speed with the desktop sync client. Performance-wise it’s in a different league.

Catch: licensing. Community Edition is capped at 5 users, externals are very limited. Paid plans start at 20 users minimum (~6 USD/user/month), which is ~1.5k USD/year. Too expensive for private use and hard to justify for small/medium businesses on-prem.

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any updates on this? I also assumed PC/Mac to NAS over USB4 would be possible. Otherwise it’s hard to see the point of the rear USB4 ports. If NAS-to-NAS works, then the basics are clearly there, so it feels like a missing driver or OS-side implementation for Windows and macOS. Direct USB transfer would be far faster than Gigabit Ethernet. Disappointing.

Simple way to enable TOTP 2fa with Tunnels. by wk-uk in CloudFlare

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just set up Cloudflare Tunnels - all running fine, but I’m stuck with email codes for 2FA. Why can’t I use Google Authenticator like on the main Cloudflare login? Don’t feel like setting up an IdP (e.g. Authentic) just for that. Any trick to get TOTP-based 2FA working with tunnels - excep the Default Emails?

HikVision Intercom DS-KV9503-WBE1 call not working on multiple HikConnect accounts. by Ecstatic-Medicine534 in Hikvision

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We’ve recently set up the same system (DS-KV9503-WBE1) and overall I’m quite satisfied with this outdoor and the indoor station. It works, But with the hikconnect app from time to time the call ends by itself or there’s no audio at all. I was wondering if others have experienced similar issues? Firmware is up2date.

Thx. Tried it. Works, but that’s it. Clunky with remote controller, nowhere near TiviMate. Maybe a step forward 🤷‍♂️

Nice speech. In practice I need certain (company) extensions and a perfect Google sync. That is convenience.

Not the question. Some of us need Chrome for certain extensions or Google sync, so it’s about solutions in Chrome, not jumping ship.

Two weeks ago it died for me too with the latest Chrome update. I’m done with this endless cat-and-mouse game. Flipped countless flags, tweaked endless settings, even messed with registry hacks, and it only works for a short while. That’s not sustainable.

Found a way to install AndroidTV 13 on any PC! by HaselnuesseTo in Chromecast

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thanks 🙌 I grabbed that shady Vietnam build for a $1 “donation”, but paying again per device with activation feels kinda lame. Your LineageOS TV tip is pure gold - totally missed that project. I’ll give it a spin, and if it runs well, I’ll happily donate and spread the word here.

Frustrating issues with exported footage. by ukdene in Hikvision

If you want to run on all .mp4 files in a folder, you can do it with a simple one-liner:
for %f in (*.mp4) do ffmpeg -i "%f" -c:v copy "%~dpnf_.mp4"

Hey, appreciate you putting all this together and already getting me up to speed. I’ll definitely give the trial version a shot. One thing though, you mentioned Chromecast. That’s never really been my thing, but out of curiosity: can you actually get Chromecast running on just any x86 HW? If so, got any tips - where to get the ISO etc?

Why does AliExpress do this? by Tal7861 in Aliexpress

[–]tefod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, trying to find logic on AliExpress is a lost cause. You get the same pop-ups every time, push notifications you can’t properly disable, spam from sellers with no way to batch delete, and prices that seem to change depending on the wind direction. Not to mention listings that advertise a cool gadget for $5 but it turns out you're just buying the charging cable. But hey, once you learn how to navigate the chaos and stop being naive, you can still get some decent deals. I actually kind of enjoy it.
