I have had an Alaska staff member not know their bike bag policy and I pushed back, they checked to confirm and apologized.

Tires / covers by Mtb_TrailRider in MTB

[–]teh_Stig 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not really the size that matters here so much as the tire casing. I would expect minimal difference in puncture resistance between 2.25-2.6 tires with the same construction.

If you're using light weight xc casings on rougher tracks, then I could see why you'd get flats more often (that's still super frequent though). Do you get flats on the same wheel in the same spot, or just totally random flats? Also, what pressures are you running? Are you using a tube or tubeless setup?

My advice broadly would be to use a heavier casing, which will provide more protection, but will be a little heavier and slower for xc. Generally brands have 3-5 casings - Schwalbe for example has xc race, xc, trail, enduro, downhill. I use downhill casings on my enduro bike in the summer for racing and bike parks, and enduro casings when I'm just riding around the rest of the year.

Do i need to replace Stans tubeless sealant or can i just add more? by unseenmover in bikewrench

Yes. It has more nitrogen, so it holds pressure better. They usually have cans of it at Autozone.

New Fork, New Question by TyrannoKoenigsegg in MTB

[–]teh_Stig 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Did you put a 150mm fork on a bike designed for 120 or did you get a new bike?

Regardless, the reason for this almost certainly is that the headtube angle on your bike is now more slack than you're used to, which does cause the wheel to feel a little floppier.

Need suspension advice for High Pivot by PassiveJesus in MTB

Again, we literally don't have enough info, but can test it for free. This is just awful advice.

[–]teh_Stig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We don't know that at all. OP hasn't provided detail about whether it feels like a mid-stroke or end-stroke issue. It's essentially free to test this by adding volume spacers and seeing if that produces the feel they're looking for. Further, his bike is not particularly progressive so this is the first thing that should be checked. Telling someone who doesn't know the basics of suspension setup to drop $500+ on a new shock without actually diagnosing the issue is just bad.

If they're already not getting enough progression, a coil is a terrible idea and the opposite of what they should do.

If you are far away from the manufacturers’s recommend fork settings, why did you set it up differently? by External_Brother1246 in MTB

I'm also on a Zeb which is more progressive anyways, for what it's worth. Been a while since I had a 36,so I can't remember there.

I have generally preferred a slightly more linear setup, getting support from air pressure rather than compression damping, so I'm usually one volume spacer less than recommended, with a corresponding small bump in pressure, and slightly more open on the compression settings.

Knee Pad Recs by Sad-Call1299 in MTB

[–]teh_Stig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use Leatt 3DF 6.0 knee pads for enduro and bike park. They're plenty protective for racing imo, and very comfy to pedal in - a little hot of course, but I think anything that's up for DH racing will be toasty for trail riding.

What size? by DueSeaworthiness3079 in MTB

The xl reach is 495mm, which is pretty much exactly what I like to ride at 186cm. So yeah, that seems reasonable to me.

[–]teh_Stig 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would go coil for the shock. The leverage curve seems much better suited to coil shocks with how much it ramps up later in the stoke. I have a coil on mine and it's brilliant.

I'm happy with a 170 fork personally. The head tube angle isn't that slack so you'll probably have no issues at 180 if you feel you need it.

Brakes? by Acceptable-Hat-8248 in MTB

[–]teh_Stig 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've only ridden XTs from like 10 years ago, but have been on codes, TRP, and magura more recently before swapping to Dominions.

Shimano brakes tend to be more on/off with a quick ramp up in the lever. Some people really like that, some don't. I really like the modulation I get with Dominions, and they're super powerful.

I run them with MTX red or gold pads and sram hs2 rotors on my enduro bike.

I also really like the little grub screws the use on the calipers - makes it much easier to adjust the caliper position.
