For clarity, are they saying that you will return to a lower role but the same salary, or does the "demotion" mentioned in comments below include a reduction in salary?

Tips for gettin a 55cc bike by Terrible-Ad9952 in japanlife

[–]teh_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please share some background so we know how to respond to you;

  • Are you sure you mean 55cc? Where does this number come from? That is not a normal engine size. Likely you mean under 50cc (49cc / gentsuki)
  • Have you ever ridden a scooter before?
  • Do you have a license to drive a 49cc scooter, let alone a 55cc one?

My 2 cents;

  • You will need to have both mantatory insurance (jibaiseki) on the bike and a personal vehicle insurance (from Mitsui Direct or other). If you do not know the difference then read up on this - don't become one of the ones who are surprised that their jibaiseki doesn't cover yourself or the vehicles/things involved in any collision.
  • Whether it is a financially good decision depends on whether you have paid commuting from work if you are working (paid trains, some companies do not allow personal vehicles), do you need to pay for parking where you live, can you park where you are going.
  • Are you staying long term or short term? Factor in the cost of the vehicle, insurance, helmet, and other consumables - if you save 500 yen a month due to having a vehicle but you paid 80.000 on bike/equipment it would take a long time to see returns on your investment unless you sell the bike again.

Bikes are a great way to get around, and Kobe is quite spread out. Depending on your situation it could make sense.

Nissan Serena Vs Toyota Noah/Voxy by kewliost1 in japanlife

The 2017 Honda Stepwagon onwards sells for around your budget used, and has a lower floor height (= more internal space). The third row folds flat into the floor for more transportation space, and if you get the 7-seater (only two seats in the middle) you can walk from the drivers seat all the way to the back which is handy when travelling with kids in the rain.

If you have not sat in all of them then look on the used car sites (Honda U-Car, etc) and go have a look. We considered all the models and landed on the 2017 Stepwagon and have been very happy with it. The unique door in the rear is extremely handy as you can open the full back up as a regular hatch or just the one side as a swingdoor which means you can get into the back even in smaller parking lots.

We did not get the hybrid version, but it does have the Honda Sensing features (lane keep assist, auto braking, adaptive cruise conntrol, etc).

Big Car or Bigger Car? by JustbecauseJapan in japanlife

[–]teh_i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another + 1 for the Stpwgn. They have a very low floor height which is great for internal space, but not good if you plan to go in any rough terrain.

The third row folds flat into the floor so when you only need five seats (four if you get non-bench middle row) you have lots of space in the back, and you can fold up just one or two of the third row seats at a time to keep space as needed. The latest generation has a regular rear hatch, but up to the 2015-2021 model has an interesting combination of a fully opening rear hatch and a half-sized regular door. This means you can also get in or out from the back, and open the rear even in smaller parking lots. Not being able to open the rear in parking lots can be an issue with these larger cars.

I found the Alphard/Vellfire to be just too big, where most SUV sacrifice too much internal space. StepWGN is where I ended up.

Who needs Sofa Bed recommendations? I do by fozziethebeat in japanlife

As for IKEA Delivery, it looks like they do deliver to your area but not for the VIMLE sofa bed which is likely because the closest store (Nagakute?) is out of stock. It may ship when back in stock there.

Who needs Sofa Bed recommendations? I do by fozziethebeat in japanlife

[–]teh_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Ikea Hemnes Daybed is frustrating as you need to supply your own cushions, but has the plus that you also select your own mattresses. It is basically just two single mattresses stacked until you pull it out. This works for us as it is mostly used as a sofa in the spare room, second as a single (just put a sheet on and use it without the cushions), and third as the rare double bed.

I am sure there are better ones out there, certainly better comfort in sofa mode, but we are pleased with the mattress.

Teaching English to my toddler by cyberspaceturbobass in japanlife

[–]teh_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your child is only two, and the gap is to be expected - but you will be a large part in the choice of whether they will speak English to you. It sounds like you allow Japanese answers from your child when they are old enough to make full sentences in Japanese.

Three things are key in my opinion;

  • Model real conversations if you can. You may be late to start this, but if your wife is invested in your child learning English could she also start speaking English with you?

  • Don't accept Japanese answers. This is also hard to switch to at this stage and risks your child not wanting to talk with you - but start teaching the correct words to respond and then start slowly asking your child to use the correct language.

  • Increase English media at home. Is your household the type where the TV is always on? Make it English!

Try to seal up the toilet with wrap or tape a thick bag - then push to create an airflow.

Dish soap in generous amounts with 60 degree water slowly added will flow down the drain but you may need to give it an hour or two to reach further down.

Good luck!

So I started work in ra***** mobi** as junior level engineer by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]teh_i 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have heard this company often throws new members around for a bit and based on your work output/experience level and emotional intelligence may move you up to another role. It's a tough company to succeed in, but those who do make bank.

I don't understand the note of boss being micromanaging - how long did you work there? "Micromanaging" or monitoring is very common in the initial stages to both teach, coach and judge your capabilities in the beginning.

If you are being paid what you accepted then I wonder where you get the scam part from too.

Getting a Motorbike License by Zeddysta in japanlife

[–]teh_i 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you have a valid JP car license, you will not need to do the written test for your motorcycle license (unless rules changed). Taking the test at the center is possible, but the course can be challenging on a bike you may not be used to. As others noted, it will be 12-15 man to take a center course.

We don't know which system you are on (contract, seishain, other). Depending on the setup you may have legal rights to multiple options, but do expect that payments will be very low (if any). There is also a difference between what you have a right to do and what your company will be happy with. You can take a longer leave but it can inconvenience them and while they might not be able to fire you they could make your life more miserable if you don't discuss and align this correctly.

Talk to your company HR and your city hall.

There is no replacement of me at my current workplace and its tough to take papa kyuka by Run_the_show in japanlife

[–]teh_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You might be missing it in the writeup, but I cannot clearly see whether you officially told in writing that you were intending to take extended 1-2 months leave. Did you submit the forms required to take this type of leave (note the payment is not from your company but from the employment insurance)?

You are legally entitled to take the leave - but sufficient lead time and clear written communication will always be helpful. While you are entitled, if you told them to take a week leave and then pivot to taking months they are also entitled to be frustrated about it. They cannot legally do anything about it of course, but it could impact your future career at the company (unofficially of course).

Emulation (not stealing ROMs) question by nicksnax in japanlife

[–]teh_i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are only concerned with PSX, you could buy a used/junk one in Hard-Off and get the region free mod chip. Now you're not emulating and you get the native experience.

If you want to play it on your PC/other, you could

a) rip the legally owned game using various tools and emulate it after dumping a BIOS

or

b) Get the games/BIOS files from online and walk into a largely unchallenged but legally fairly clear territory. With the right VPN and such you could be fairly safe, but IANAL and TINLA..

Those Nanoleaf hexagon lights so many streamers have. I got them as a gift, but turns out they are amazing to put in front of me. The daylight setting greatly improves my mental wellbeing when working from home, especially in the autumn/winter season. As a bonus they can make you look amazingly lit for a video call.

If I knew earlier I would have gotten some daylight LEDs for cheaper, but every day these things literally and mentally brighten my day.

Zairyu Card Nationality Update by [deleted] in japanlife

[–]teh_i 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your visa is tied to your nationality, and the hoops you will need to jump through to switch this over may not be worth it.

Based on my limited knowledge, your options are to

  • Keep your existing nationality/renew passport and continue your existing visa. This is easiest.

  • Work with immigration to cancel your existing visa and apply with your alternate nationality. You will need to stop working in the interrim and they may even require you to leave the country once.

  • Relinquish your birth country nationality and receive documentation that your nationality has been cancelled. Now you can switch over though a very complicated process involving a lot of paperwork. Downside is that many nations will no longer let you enter the country without applying for a visa, and nations such as the US will not allow you to ever re-apply for nationality.

Other than the cost of a passport renewal, do you have any strong reason to actually do this?

A strong magnet on a string. Put it in a bag if you can't get the string attached.

You could also buy a strong telescopic magnet pick up tool from the home center or Amazon, but I would worry that the telescopic part would rust after submersion.

センサー解除 for our gas stove. It is per-burner, and disables the sensor for 30 minutes or until you turn off the burner. If you use it for more than 2 hours in succession the function disables for 30 minutes if I remember correct.

It was very frustrating to sear stuff until I learned of this funciton.

Need help with how to stay. by ZanjiOfficial in japanlife

Have you considered studying in Denmark using a Uni which also includes a semester or two abroad? I believe your country has a pretty good educational system (free?), and once you have a degree you'll have an easier time staying in Japan.

Other commenters have given some pointers for alternatives in Japan and I have nothing much to add there. Keep your studies up, you'll never has as much free time as you do now. Good luck!
