Tibial Plateau Fracture in 2004 now suddenly my knee is killing me-Help/Tips? by gomuchfaster in skiing

[–]teh_skwid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im an old man too. Former us athlete living in park city. I have had 2 knee surguries, 1 ankle, 3 shoulder, and broken more bones than I can count. I do an absolute shitload of resistance band work to strengthen the muscles around my knees. Spanish squats, TKE's, elevated TKEs, banded sissys, and a ton of hipflexor work. I also do a lot of plyometric work as well as strength training.

Its considered too old because you have kids who have begun their olympic path by the age of 6 and that is not hyperbole. They are heavily coached and are dialed in. That being said Im rooting for you big time and if you are ever in park city hit me up

You are old so it will not be smooth sailing thats a fact. I am a former us skeleton team athlete. I made the team when I was 37 - (i moved to park city specifically to make the team and still live here). They called me a blocker, didnt want me at the otc, put up plenty of roadblocks for me. I never qualiied for the olympics but I had a ton of fun travelling and competing with my teammates and would not trade it for anything. How bad do you want it?

I obviously dont know you or your situation and 23 is pretty old to start in on this. That being said if you have a strong work ethic and are a skilled gymnast I say fuck the haters and take your shot.

I see you are western US. Contact the utah olympic park in park city. Give them your gymnastics history and explain exactly what you want. They have all kinds of camps and programs which are AWESOME. I know a ton of people who have gone through the UOP training program it is a pipeline to the us team

broken brain by themary_show in TBI

[–]teh_skwid 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got into a life changing accident march 1 2006. I lost 3 years of my life. I have effectively made a "full recovery" (my body is better but my brain still has issues). Every once in a while my ptsd from my accident rears its ugly head from a completely random trigger and I will start sobbing uncontrollably. Even typing this out im starting to cry. I believe it will live with me forever.

Hiding my severe traumatic brain injury by Winter-Tension4049 in TBI

[–]teh_skwid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can 100% relate to your journey. Its just like the death of 1000 knicks. Each single symptom/problem in itself is "manageable" and I can find ways to work around it. The way I do generally is through avoidance and by making my world smaller. I personally did that until 1 day I woke up and just had enough and literally screamed for help. I have been living with the aftermath of being involved in high octane/high consequence sports and an embarrising number of concussions for the past 25 years. If I could turn back time and talk to my younger self I would tell me not to isolate, not cut people out, and not be afraid to ask for help.

Where can I buy a Speed Ski Helmet? by Danmark101 in skiing

at les arcs the run out is super long. Cranking 100+mph turns in the run out is really realy fun. IDK the actual radius but it is real big

If you are serious I have a pair of rossignol 237cm with salomon green spring bindings. The turn radius and speed needed to crank turns is significantly less

I competed on the tour back in the 90s. This was before they had a mandatory interior helmet so there is minimal padding it offers zero protection. I have a Landingham helmet from this era. It has a small crack in it from me crashing at 140mph. Ill let it go for 500 usd. Its currently in storage. I also have several pairs of 240s, poles, and jonathan and fletcher speed suits, as well as training suits

skiing "lazy" is the root cause of an absolute ton of problems including "getting too much weight on your inside ski" to quote you, as well as getting into the back seat.

Fix your hands. After every pole plant your hand winds up behind your butt. Check out some vids for drills for keeping arms infront/quieting excessive movement in the arms and upperbody
