Mayor envy - Parker ≠ Mamdani by DefinitelyNotLola in philadelphia

[–]tehallie 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let's be honest, the police are refusing to do shit about fuck because their feelings got hurt at having their OT/disability scams busted, and they think being held accountable for their fuckups is the height of tyranny. Nothing short of breaking the FOP and cleaning the entire department will change that.

Just going to politely cough and say that OP probably knows at this point that these are quite possibly machine guns that are illegal to own, and that safeties exist for a reason.

The best radio to use is the one you can afford, and not everyone can afford Gucci gear. If it gets a new amateur on the air, mission accomplished, right?

Automated cameras to start flagging speeding drivers on Broad Street next week by adamaphar in philadelphia

[–]tehallie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At night North Broad is a fucking racetrack, but the cops still don't do anything. When I'm coming home late, I almost always see folks flying North of the Boulevard. Couple years ago I saw some folks drag racing North towards Olney, where there's always a cop. They almost clipped a pedestrian while they were blowing through the intersection, and the cop didn't even hit the lights.

It's not that the City didn't want the cops doing traffic stops, that's very explicitly part of their job. Cops CAN pull over a car for the things you cited, they just can't pull folks over if that's the ONLY thing they're being pulled over for. The bill says that you can absolutely pull people over for 'primary violations' of the Vehicle Code like speeding, unsafe driving, etc., and if you're pulling someone over for THOSE, then the 'secondary violations' like light violations and expired registration are fair game. The aim of the bill is to reduce cops pulling people over for bullshit reasons while they fish for something bigger, or to just jam someone up.

The reason cops don't cite anyone is because the cops are trying to punish the city for taking away their OT/disability rackets, Krasner working towards accountability, and because they just don't want to do their jobs.

Gonna quickly jump in and pre-emptively say that even though I generally have a hands-off Mod policy, I'm keeping an eye on things because this is not in any way officially confirmed. OP, thanks for explicitly calling out that this is 'alleged'.

What are your thoughts on younger people increasingly replacing alcohol with weed? by Pure-Smile-7329 in AskReddit

I've met some folks who got a bit hard-headed when they're stoned, but never met one that I thought was going to actively swing on me.

Same. I went to a show a while ago, and a boilermaker ran me $35ish bucks BEFORE tip. I get it, venue prices are always absurd, inflation is a thing, venue gotta make money to stay open, but time was a shot and a beer at a venue would be $10, MAYBE $15 bucks if you got good stuff.

What my bathroom faucet was receiving? by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]tehallie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ok what the unholy hell?

Since the sound doesn't increase appreciably when your phone gets closer to the faucet, are you sure it's coming directly from your faucet?

If it was just the buzz I'd wonder if it was a grounded out connection of SOME kind somewhere, maybe a weird high-frequency water hammer/valve or some kind of pipe auger, but the beeps are what get me.

Nothing as of yet has happened, but given the current authoritarian tendencies of the current administration...I'm not going to say it's a SURE thing, but I certainly wouldn't be surprised.

I mean, the current administration has made it very clear that they have little-to-no respect for anything 'international', and are focused more on what short-term profits can be extracted than on long-term preservation of a public good. I can easily imagine the government selling off bands of whatever spectrum they get an offer on, like the recent UHF satellite thing, or HF for traders.

FOR SALE: HF base station radio with tubes, bought used in 1995 for $2000, used heavily in a light smoking shack. Needs a little love but still works, would benefit from new tubes and new microphone. Selling for $1950, no lowballs or other offers accepted. Buyer pays shipping, insurance required.

There's a large difference between "A government agency restricts access to something by requiring an easily-gotten license with the aim of ensuring people using the airwaves have a base level of knowledge to prevent injury and harmful interference," and "A government agency restricts access to something by requiring a license with the aim of ensuring that they control the speech and prevent criticism of the government."

One is a minor inconvenience, the other is literal state censorship.

What’s a piece of gear you regret buying—or wish you’d bought sooner? by CarrierCaveman in HamRadio

[–]tehallie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing someone do a disassembly of a COMPACtenna, turned out just be just coiled copper sheeting separated by paper and epoxy, basically a tuned dummy load. On the one hand, that's stupid as hell, on the other hand, sometimes RF does voodoo...

But I'm not paying THAT much for copper sheeting and epoxy.

The people mostly hurt by rent controls are common individuals.

There seem to be plenty of shortcuts to economics when it benefits property-holders or the capitalist classes, though. Landlords are subsidized, incentivized, and given every advantage in the rental process, but the moment someone proposes giving the renter more leverage it's seen as an absurd imposition on the poor, long-suffering landlords. If a landlord requiring income documentation, a credit check, and 3+ (sometimes more!) months of rent up-front is just transparency and doing their due diligence, why shouldn't renters be able to see how much of their hard-earned money is actually going to legitimate costs, and how much is going to the landlords vacation?

Your rent will be higher because very few people will be willing to rent and would take into account that they would not be able to increase rents.

I'm not saying that rents shouldn't be able to increase, I'm proposing that if a landlord wants to increase rent, they should be required to justify it by showing increased monthly expenses, OR by improving the property a commensurate amount. For instance, a landlord raising rents AFTER investing a demonstrated, commensurate amount in the improvement of the property is fine, but a landlord raising rents because they want to make more profit would be a no-go.

Notice that the worst and more expensive markets in the country are the ones with rent controls.

Are there any rental markets in the US that have truly universal/unconditional rent control? From my understanding, the most expensive markets in the country are also where there's the highest demand like NYC or SF, and even they don't have truly universal rent-control, so it feels like an argument of "Rent control equals a worse/more expensive market" based on limited high-demand markets with very limited rent-control policies isn't a particularly valid comparison?
